In my younger days I worked in a shake mill just on the trim saw, as I’m a girl, but I liked it kinda miss that smell.

Mrssea Sea In my experience, women are much better workers in a shake mill, especially packing the bundles. They have better manual dexterity with their hands. 😊

Howdy - in general, Red Cedar and these Yellow Cedar 18" barn shakes are 3/8" thick (9.5mm). They can be split any thickness. Thanks for looking!

Hi, Lloyd, can you help me with the actual name of the splitting machine? Thank you in advance.
@woodroofguy8 жыл бұрын
+Mary Yasyuk Hi Mary - Thanks for your question! I would call it a "barn shake" machine or a "straight split" machine - or a combination thereof... Hope that helps.

"Yellow cedar" is a common name but the actual name is Cypress. In reality there is no such thing as yellow cedar. For what it's worth. Liked the video though.

where can i purchase the splitting machine??
@tinahaynes6964 жыл бұрын
You can’t really buy one. They’re custom designed and made by “ old school “ mill machinist. Look close. That isn’t off the shelf from Home Depot. That’s a hand made knife splitting those shakes. But it’s cool ain’t it ?

Love to see these guys not wearing any hearing protection… “WHAT????” 🙉
@woodroofguy Жыл бұрын
Fair comment! Please note however that they fellow in the video is the mill owner and he was only running the machine for the purposes of this video, which was a few minutes. All of the other workers in the mill wear ear protection, all day, everyday.

You can keep that job.... it's 2019 you think someone could come up with a robot that can do that job that's just way too freaking dangerous

We don't need anymore robots..we've lost so many great paying jobs to AI and automation. Pretty soon we'll all be homeless. And just for the record..I worked in the Shake n Shingle Industry throughout the late 70's and 80's. Good honest, hardwork..no gym membership needed 💪🌲🍁
