Their giant legs make them look so goofy! What a great bird 😂

I think I speak for everyone when I say I'm rooting for the yellowheads' recovery! Sometimes conservation efforts for endangered species seem hopeless, but this is one case where we can clearly fix what's been broken.

100% They're facing pretty big risks in many of their more mountainous ranges, as rats and the like are more able to reach them as the overall climate here in the south island gets drier. They're very precarious, but at least they're not as funky as birds like Kakapo, which have been among the hardest to help out.

As always, thank you, and I would really like to say, "Made my evening" if the context were not thus sad, but thankfully, all kinds of reptiles are much more resilient than mammals, when it comes to problems going along with interbreeding, as a knowledgeable friend once told me.

I have one eating birdseed from my feeder in the coromandel right now. Could it be a yellow hammer? . It’s really close and looks identical to a yellowhead. Just wondered if they came up here previously. It’s so striking I thought someone’s pet had escaped ! I’d never heard of them. Delighted they are native and of course in my garden! I’m blessed, heaps of Tui pairs, one nesting in a rewa rewa tree four meters from my loung window! Loads of beautiful fantails who do course are my constant companions while gardening! The tui ate half my mandarins but I couldn’t keep up with my tree eating ten a day as it was so I was happy for them to take the top ones I couldn’t reach. I noticed smaller birds eating the insects attracted to the mandarins too. I also have several huge and currently fruiting loganberry trees that all the birds seem to love for both perching and the smaller birds eating the ripened fruit.
