This is a rare video of Yellowjackets at the 1981 Montreux Jazz Festival. The performances from this were released on the "Casino Lights" albums back in the early 80s. Personnel include Russell Ferrante on keyboards, Jimmy Haslip on bass, Ricky Lawson on drums, and the great Robben Ford on guitar. This was videotaped from a European television broadcast in 1981, so quality is early VHS at best. Part 2 of 2.

Right you are! He wrote this wonderful material and it sounds like he was writing to the strengths of his band mates.

Man Ricky Lawson's passing has left a nice sized void, this brother was a beast on the drums and he played with so many heavyweights that you couldn't keep count of.59 is too damn young to die and plus he has other music that hasn't been released as of yet, my brother who is a professional drummer himself said Ricky got him gigs and was one of the nicest cats you could ever meet, may this brother have a peaceful journey and thanks for all that you have done in the music field

I was there for this concert. It was totally cool. The sound was fresh and lit the place up. I had the good fortune to be playing a gig next door to Mountain Studios where the group along with Sanborn and others were laying down live tracks and rehearsing. What a treat to hang out for a while.

There were lyrics written by (and sung on her own album) for this song by Marilyn Scott. I used to see Russel & Marilyn (and Jimmy) working out these songs in a jazz club called Dontes in LA

While it does sound as if the 'Jackets a little of of sorts on this performance, WHILE YOU'RE AWAY(aka 'Pass it On') only SOUNDS easy to play. Its a bit tricky, the chord voicings are sort of like Gospel music turned inside/out. An amazing composition by Russell Ferrante. But they seriously redeemed themselves on Imperial Strut, they were str8 burning. Wonder what type of amps/pedals Robben Ford was plugging his Strat and ES-335 into for this set?
@jaysteels
@jaysteels 7 жыл бұрын
He was most likely using a Yamaha G100. He's known to have used that amp around that time, before he got the Dumble in 1983.
