Yellowstone gets a lot of snow in the winter, averaging three feet in January and closing most of the roads in the park. Snowmobiles and snow coaches are the only vehicles allowed, There are several hundred elk in the snow-covered meadow, but we will spook them if we try to get closer. However, they are comfortable with horses, so an old-fashioned horse-drawn sleigh is the best way to get good footage. Coyotes are opportunistic hunters, surviving primarily on small mammals, such as voles, prairie dogs, rabbits, ground squirrels, and mice. Red foxes are omnivores with a highly varied diet, feeding primarily on small rodents.
The bison is truly a majestic animal. An adult bull may measure six feet tall at the shoulder and weigh 2,000 pounds. Females look like the males except that they are smaller and have more slender horns. Bison mate from July through early August, and the calves are born in April and May.
Right on time, Old Faithful is the symbol of Yellowstone National Park. Its unparalleled array of geysers, hot springs, mud pots and steam vents provide evidence of the active volcano below our feet. In Yellowstone, you are standing in one of the world's largest active volcanoes.

The Elk Refuge is just north of Jackson, WY, between there and the airport. The highway there is open all year and it is an easy, 6 to 7 hour drive from Salt Lake City. Yellowstone Park's South Entrance is several miles further north and Grand Teton National Park is just west of Jackson Hole. That area is really beautiful and warrants a separate trip to see it. You can spend weeks in the region and never see everything that is there.

It is incredibly beautiful. I grew up only 2hrs from there. We used to cross country ski in Yellowstone every winter and back pack every summer. A few years ago I went back to MT for a visit. On my way home I decided to go through the park. I stopped to take a pic of the mountains and happened to look around in time to see a big and very beautiful wolf. For those who haven't seen Yellowstone I hope you get the opportunity. It is a beauty that you will never forget!
