Thank you for posting this video. Epilogue on Scarface a/k/a Bear 211: He was seen all over the Park in his last year of life. He was all over the east side (as opposed to the northeast side) in October. On October 8th, he walked the shoreline along Mary Bay. We missed him. Later in the day, he spooked a couple of fishermen when he crossed the Yellowstone River by LeHardys Rapids. We got pictures of that. He then crossed the main highway. We never saw him, again. A couple months later he was killed outside of North Gate... allegedly in self-defense. Following are our questions: The grizzly, Quad Mom?....Obsidian Sow?....Beryl Springs Sow? Where did you photograph? At approximately 22:40, what's the small body of water? Your last hike: was that Specimen Ridge? Once upon a time, a long time ago, I surprised a ram with a spring harem up there....Learned that sheep do, in fact, mate in the spring and uninvited guests are not welcome.
@Yellowstonewolves
@Yellowstonewolves 8 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Bittner on that sow I don't remember but she and those cubs spent most of May over by Slough creek just North of Daves Hill. I think by end of summer a friend told me she denned with only one cub left. The 22:40 lake is Lost Lake on the west end. The last hike was specimen ridge - sometimes we just start on it and head west sometimes we go much higher and along the ridge to the south east where there is a creek that dumps into the Yellowstone. There were so many kills up there and random sheds. Some old grizzly kills they tried to hide that had been there for a number of years. I have scarface if a few videos - one year passed him on a trail by Shrimp Lake, once by hitching post. Over the years we noticed he lost a lot of his senses. We watched him walk past a recent elk kill about 40 feet away - everyone was saying no no go left like he could hear or understand. I do have a couple of great pics of him I need to hang. It was odd to see so much of that bear so often. We use to asks friends out there - have you spotted him out of the den yet? I think most thought one year he would just die in his den and never be seen from again. Sad to hear about him being shot. I don't hunt but if it had be me I would have gladly given him the kill. Loved seeing the old guy.
@jeffbittner1019
@jeffbittner1019 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response. Scarface probably didn't have many years left in him. Maybe, in the long run, it's a good thing he died that way. We witnessed the last time the bear they called Snaggletooth crossed the road. He was, essentially staggering. He crossed the road, lay down in a field just south of Mud Volcano and never got up. One of the ranger staff who saw the autopsy report said that he had been badly wounded and died ridden with parasites. It didn't sound like a pleasant death, at all. Perhaps, Scarface's death was more humane.

+Ron Sterbenz At which distances were you from the Wolves and up to how far does your scope go? How often would you spot Wolves, where were the Wolves at, and where were you standing? Also, which days in May did you happen to spot Wolves, what was the time of day, and what were the temperatures? How often would they cross the road? At what distance would they typically tolerate your presence when hiking the backcountry?
@Yellowstonewolves
@Yellowstonewolves 6 жыл бұрын
These are great questions. Wolves do stuff every single day. However they are highly mobile, they follow the ungulates - to some degree. The reason you don't see wolves sometimes is that Yellowstone is enormous and they are out hunting a mile or two or three in the opposite direction from where you are. I have seen then cover three miles of terrain with hills a river etc in 30 mins - hikers couldn't keep up safely. I generally spot wolves daily though we go by a day or so where we don't. You simply have to know where to look and have a lot of patience. Also you have to figure who has eaten last packwise. A pack that hasn't eaten in a couple days is bound to hunt the next day. Time of day - search morning and around dusk, I like it cold 30's 40's 50's - 70's get tough because of the heat waves coming off the ground. They can be active in the middle of the day but less so. Also the heat of the day just makes it harder to see long distances. My scope can see about up to 1 1/2 miles. maybe 2 miles on a good cold day. I love winter because a lot of light - cold is easier to see through but a small bit of snow between you and an object over a mile and that quickly becomes an issue. How often do they cross the road, not to often but they want to go they will. Many try to really avoid cars. I have seen a pack wait until night to cross a road. Tolerate your presence - this depends on the pack. I usually see about 1/2 mile is good if people are quiet - they will know you are there but will go about their business. I think wolves outside yellowstone act very different and are likely much more afraid of people. Where is the best place to stand - this is very easy, in the location where you can see the most. I use a scope and tripod and search hillsides for hours and hours. You have to wait and just watch. You just never know "when" it will happen. Many many things just happen out of your view. When is the best time to see animals Labor Day weekend and the week that follows - Elk are calfing and soon pronghorns too. Bison have new calfs. Its a good time to go.

How did the bear cubs get down from the tree? If they fell could they die?
@Yellowstonewolves
@Yellowstonewolves 7 жыл бұрын
Cubs are amazing little creatures - they have a preprogramed ability to climb and "stick to trees." How do they get down? Just as they got up there but in reverse. If they fall can they die? Yes and some do but it's really rare. Cubs climb to avoid predators and other mature bears. For black bears this is the mother's main defense for her cubs and this is why you seldom see mothers and cubs out in the open. In fact their primary support is the loge pole pine to tree her cubs when needed. Sometimes she will even follow them up the tree but as bears get older they are not as good of climbers they are just too heavy to be supported by the tree bark. Grizzlies on the other hand are very mean - and this is the primary defense for mothers and cubs. She will tree first year cubs but by year two she out covering territory with cubs in tow out in the open. Partly its because of the diet and feeding nature of grizzlies that they must simply be able to defend their cubs without trees close by.

Hi Ron, We're going to Yellowstone in three weeks. Could you tell me what you were using for a spotting scope and i phone attachment. Thanks. Love the video you took of the bear and her cubs!
@Yellowstonewolves
@Yellowstonewolves 8 жыл бұрын
+Roger Hart (and for others) I use a Swarovski Optic ATX 95 Scope (these are pricy) but the clarity and distance is unmatched. These take you to the maximum focal length you can achieve with ordinary glass before the thermal effect distorts your view. For those going to Yellowstone, take the best optics you can buy or simply rent, it will make or break your trip and I have spent a couple years learning this. For the camera I can use a DSLR or iPhone... NOTE the DSRL sucks at distance the shutter movement can be just enough wiggle to distort your image. I would use a shutterless digital. I hold my Iphone with a phoneskope adapter. I like this system because the optics rings and body are interchangeable. Dress warm, lots of rest (because you spend hours scanning with your eyes) and lots of patience.

how were u able to capture such amazing footage were u hiking or just following the bears and wolves
@Yellowstonewolves
@Yellowstonewolves 7 жыл бұрын
This all depends on what you find and what they are doing. If a wolf pack is hunting there really is no way to catch up and still stay out of their view. In this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6PdnqJ6edCBjtk - I was in a place where it was the center of circle, if you stayed still and knew the most likely route, you knew what to keep your eye on... that is until they went into a ravine or up over a hill. The best way is to figure out your favorite vantage points in the habitat for what you want to find.

Do the grizzly bears not attack if you're outside and up close?
@Yellowstonewolves
@Yellowstonewolves 7 жыл бұрын
First distance really matters - you never want to be too close. First because they could feel threatened by your presence if you are close, second because I really don't want to just "see" a grizzly as much as watch and record their normal behaviors and they won't behave normally if you are too close. Grizzlies are not killers stalking humans, they prefer to avoid people too and if they don't feel threatened they will ignore you as you watch them from a safe distance. They are amazing animals that deserve respect and space. The sows are great mothers but even these top predators like the Grizzly and Wolf, have it really hard in the wild and survival is very hard.

where is the most consistent sighting of bears in the park located, thanks :)
@Yellowstonewolves
@Yellowstonewolves 7 жыл бұрын
This really depends on what kind of bear and what time of year. Bears defend their young in much different ways. Lodge pole pine is black bear habitat. Mean grizzly prefer the edges and some sage. They prefer to not be caught in too many trees - except with first and maybe early second year cubs. These little fellers are still great climbers. There are bears everywhere in the park so think of it this way. Where is the most accessible habitat for the most common bear? I would say Black bear on the side of the road from Tower Junction up and over the pass. Water, good foods for young, trees for safety, lots of tourist that tend to scare off grizzly and wolves and BB boars. Blacks will find this roadside area pretty good habitat as they learn to accept photographers by the 100's most likely its because the sows were once cubs in these areas too. Blacks (also sometimes cinnamon color) are pretty plentiful in the park. While they are a pretty mellow and accepting bear, make no mistake they will charge you. So keep your distance and when they are calm you can enjoy hours of just siting and watching them play, feed and explore.

A great place. I guided there for 11 years. Most of the park employees are nice people. Unfortunately some have a personality like the south end of a northbound house. As far as I could tell, some knew what they were talking about, but many were just arrogant jerks. One law enforcement supervisor struts around like she was John Wayne, her employees refer to her as "The Duke". She is from Long Island, NY and rude. Her favorite officer is from Jersey City, NJ, is short and has a severe case of small man syndrome. One officer can drive encounter a situation, get the concerns resolved promptly and courteously, then be asked to allow themselves to be photographed with some of the folks involved with the concern. That personality is perfect for a national park law enforcement officer. Most of the administration is controlled by regional offices in CO. or Washington DC. Some of the planning group would rather construct a complete fabrication even it the truth sounded better. But the park is a super place.

I've just completed my 43rd visit to Yellowstone. It seems likely that Old400 has never been there and does not quite comprehend the concept of harassment. Visitors, new and old, frequently witness ungulates running parallel to a vehicle for quite some time before deciding upon which side of the road they would like to rest/graze. Of course, social media has made it possible for people to comment on a variety of subjects. Sometimes the commenters speak from an enlightened perspective, sometimes not.
