Hey guys. You may have already gotten context from other comments, but I thought I would chime in. John was unfortunately killed off screen because Kevin Costner left the show. He had his films Horizon in pre production and was scheduled to enter production outside of Yellowstones filming schedule. When the final season of Yellowstone was filming, delays occurred, and Taylor Sheridan then demanded everyone shoot outside of their contracts. Everyone was free to do so except Costner. Rumor is, Sheridan rudely demanded Costner postpone his production in order to finish Yellowstone. Costner offered to return after a break. So they released the first half of season 5, planning to finish filming and release the second half later. Well apparently Sheridan again went outside the agreed timeframe and so Costner just did his project. When Sheridan was ready… Costner was not. They got into it apparently and there is some bad blood there now. It is frustrating because you can kinda feel the F U from Sheridan in his treatment of Johns character in the second half. It is an example of two massive personalities colliding. Both of these men are used to getting their way and they both feel slighted by the other. It’s really unfortunate, because Yellowstone still had gas in it. Hope that clears up why this was so jarring and he was killed off screen. Edit: also the old timer in the workshop, is a famous cowboy and farrier, Sheridan wanted to showcase what went into cowboys behind the scenes so to speak. His name is Billy Klapper and played himself in the show for that one scene. He died last September.

As everyone stated, Kevin had another series he was working on and he and Taylor weren’t able to come to an agreement over the schedules and other things so Kevin walked. Also, the gentleman working on those spurs actually was just playing himself, he made spurs by hand and was renown for it in Texas. He passed shortly after the episode was filmed if I’m not mistaken

Fun fact: the detective that Kayce speaks to at the end about the surveillance tapes, is played by Rory Cochrane. Both Rory Cochrane & Cole Hauser (Rip) were in a movie together called Dazed & Confused, a cult classic by Richard Linklater. That movie was also the big break for them and Matthew McConaughey, Jason London, Parker Posey, Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Milla Jovovich, Adam Goldberg, & Nicky Katt. So Cochrane's guest starring is like a mini reunion for them, some 30 years later.

I think he got sick of doing the show because they killed off the character in a kinda humiliating way (his character didn't clean his gun regularly and it jammed in a firefight & he was shot). The character they replaced him with was annoying as hell.

23:42 that line particularly hurt to hear for me, my family have been iron workers for over 250 years since the industrial revolution began in England. The last real great project my family got to work on was my Great Great Nan she worked in Wolverhampton on the anchors and chains for the Titanic. Now a few of my family work at the living history museum as blacksmiths trying to keep the skills of the past alive because once the old ones go, all the skills and history they keep alive die with them. Then we truly have lost our connection to the past. And take it from me there is no more satisfying feeling of accomplishment then when you see a piece of iron go from a rod into whatever shape we need, from the tools we use, to a Ram's head fireplace poker I finished making.

Thankfully the cast and Sheridan all said in interviews That the Finale is 95% what was planned from the beginning and honestly If you watch 1883 and 1923 The Finale ties into everything fairly nicely

Well to Sarah Atwood, John was the bigger fish. He was the governor and the owner of the land her company wanted to have. Get him out of the way and the way is all but paved for Market Equities in her mind. She didn't see Beth as a big enough threat. Most people make that mistake haha
@DylanMadd
@DylanMadd 17 күн бұрын
@ I agree with that. It’s just. She was clearly not protected and was taken out of the game very very easily. So I mean. Maybe it’s just a matter of both of them being in WAY over their heads. Atwood also must have had that Market Equities CEO bamboozled too. In another light, I suppose the job got done.

@DylanMadd Sarah confused me a bit in the second half of season 5. Like she's so ruthless and cold blooded for almost no reason. Like with John, Kayce, Rip etc you get why they're ruthless, why they do what they do, to protect the ranch, though sometimes they go too far, but Sarah? Like she was just hired by Market Equities and she comes in and single handedly organises the murder of the Governor. It was just a bit crazy to me haha like why is she like this? Why is she so ruthless for a job? The Duttons fight for their family and/or their home, but Sarah doesn't seem to have that motivation she's just doing it for the bucks?

Most of us knew, going into the second part of the season, that Kevin Costner would be off the show and not appearing at all, based on confirmation from all parties earlier in the year - the question was exactly how they’d do it. While some debate exists on exactly how it came to be, it appears that the Writers/Actor strike delayed things long enough where Kevin Costner got moving on Horizon project and wasn’t willing to spend the necessary time on the show that Taylor Sheridan wanted (reports that he wasn’t willing to work on Yellowstone more than 1 day a week), and other actors felt it was unfair. And so, the often-reported abrasive personality Taylor Sheridan and Costner couldn’t come up with an agreement, and this is how Dutton was written out.

There’s a lot of gossip and speculation about problems behind the scenes but in reality it seemed more about schedule issues for Costner and him wanting to do other projects like Horizon. I think Costner never imagined the show being this successful and lasting this long and he wanted to do other things and Paramount wouldn’t adjust the filming schedule and Sheridan says he does the writing and stuff but Paramount makes the schedule.

Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan were at odds about the direction the show was going and filming schedule. Kevin wanted to work on his own project called Horizon, but with the hectic schedule he couldn't do it. The worst part about this whole situation; Horizon Bombed.

Unfortunately Costner left the show before the second half of the season was filmed. There was a huge gap in production because of logistical issues and the strikes, and because of that Sheridan went to work on some other projects. During that gap, Costner wrote and started prep on a series of historical western films and got a filming date secured, which he was locked into for - again - logistical reasons…if you’re making a historical western, you have to have particular weather and the locations are going to be limited. Sheridan kept issuing delays because he was tied up on the other shows, and Costner’s clock was ticking. When Sheridan finally freed up, the time Costner would be available was so absurdly short and the production would require so many long days that Costner demanded a significant pay increase from MTV Productions, and they balked. They negotiated as long as they could, but Costner ran out of time. I think Costner was hoping Sheridan would delay production, but instead Sheridan just decided to stick to the schedule despite already delaying for so long, and killed him off. This drove a pretty permanent wedge between Costner & Sheridan and their camps kind of went to war in the trades. Sheridan’s started developing a bit of a reputation for being difficult to work with and self-aggrandizing and he and Cole Hauser even had a falling-out for a while. I know it’s disappointing but unfortunately egos & money are often a terrible mix in every production.

Here we go on the home stretch. Happy New Year to Nikki, Steven, and all the felloe Ranch Hands out there. 🥃☮❤ 5:12 Well, you're not wrong. The terrible thing just didn't happen here. 5:43 Better pick that tissue back up, M'Lady...sh!t's about to get really real.😭 9:47 Exactly what I said. As murder plots go, this one was poorly thought out. "Quit" was not in John Dutton's vocabulary. 13:05 I feel like some of this was filmed while still thinking that Costner might be available for limited shooting (no pun intended), hence the somewhat disjointed feel of this episode.

the scream seemed real... such a good actress as to the rest: Basically what happened is that Costner got into a pissing contest with the people running the show because he wanted to go do something else and they were gonna let them and it went back and forth for a while until finally Costner gave them all a great big double SUFI and said he wasn’t coming back and that was the end of it So the entire second half of the fifth season was rushed because they had to figure out a way to close out the show because Costner was no longer there, and that’s why they did the suicide and why we don’t see him because he refused to come back to even do a cameo

To your question, yes there are private companies that do this kind of work. They are called 'private intelligence firms'. What I found so interesting about that clip, she did not ask the right questions. He called her a lose end. Those firms do not leave loose ends. He was looking right into her eyes. The employees are big time 'morally flexible.' I suspect there may be a twist. She feels so untouchable and smug. Besides, I loathe her--so wishful thinking might be at play too.

Jamie and Sarah discussing taking Beth out is important but keep in mind who employs Sarah, they would benefit the most out of taking John out rather than Beth, my take is that this would have been discussed and they decided to take John out, knowing how weak Jamie is, Sarah would easily be able to get away with a weak story to convince him why it was John. That’s how I took it anyway.

I guess I am in the minority. I liked the way they ended Yellowstone. TS had to write John out of the series. Jamie told Sarah that John would be hard to beat in a fair fight and Sarah said she didn’t think they could let him show up to the fight. Sarah seemed to have the connections and the meeting with Grant proved that.

I hate to complain because thats all anyone seems to do anymore. I don't blame Taylor or Kevin for the problem. But, it's just modern TV. Back when produced TV shows were on networks, they started each season in September, and ran 24 to 27 episodes per season. Now, there are 8 to 10 episodes per season, and they put 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 years between seasons. It makes it hard to stay engaged. I mean, the next season of Stranger Things is going to be "the gang" fighting the government again. This time, they will be fighting for Eleven to qualify for Social Security!

Unlike you two, I wasn't able to stay away from spoilers, so I knew the basics of what happened, what they did about it in the show and I know what developed from this. As far as it goes, it wasn't the best but it wasn't the worst I've seen by a long shot. I do think they do a good job (from what I've seen) of where the story goes from here.
