Some of the shortcomings in LAX come from the thoughts of its early planners in the 60s. They thought passengers will not want to spend time in the terminals, they want to park their cars, walk to the terminal, board the plane and go. International air travel was not a big thing and they did not envision being a major transfer hub. That explains the horseshoe setup with parking in the middle, small terminal buildings with little space for concessions or seating. The good thing about LAX is the cooperating weather year round, 4 parallel runways with wind from the same direction 95% of the time. Once you make it to the terminal, there is less chance you have to wait hours for a delayed flight.

Agreed. I believe LAX originally had the shortest distance from the curbside to the boarding gate. That was when people could sit with you until you got on your plane and you didn't have the type of security you have to go through now. LAX was originally praised for it's design to quickly get on and off a plane and be on your way.

As someone who lives in Orange County and flies out of lax, I couldn’t agree with you more. The horseshoe is unforgiving if you miss the turn for your garage (if you can even get a spot), forcing you to traverse the whole horseshoe again. All the lines for coffee and food is always long so I end up getting a pre-made sandwich at a Hudson shop. The only reason I’d pick lax over John Wayne airport or Ontario international is because lax has the most flight options (non stop flights) and are usually cheaper.

Last year when I was on a layover at LAX we traveled in the domestic terminal and then we realized that we had to make it to the international terminal in order to make it to South Korea, we were completely lost until we asked an airport staffer. She asked us to go through underground tunnel that is a mile long. It was exhausting. The most absurd part is that we had to go to some sort of basement that had construction going on and go through this elevator with multiple floors. We essentially had Gamble and choose which floor is the correct one. Thank goodness it’s the right one. We then have to travel through more tunnels and overpasses with multiple pathways we had to choose. Finally we are at are at the international terminal to spend and hour finding our gate. Thank god the LAX staff were helpful because if not, we would have been stranded in Los Angeles.

TBH, One of the biggest annoyances at LAX is trying to connect International to International. In most world airports, you can stay airside but not at US Airports. You have to go through US Immigration and customs even if you are leaving LAX on another International flight within a few hours. Foreign visitors also need an ESTA or Visa for the USA even if we have no intention of staying in the US and are just connecting International to International. It is crazy!
@kckong7433

I believe that is a federal policy on how these international transfers are done. Doesn't matter which airport you landed.

It's all US airports that do this for all international arrivals that are connecting either domestically or international. LAX is my home airport but experienced this in Seattle, JFK, Boston, Philly and Dallas. It is very annoying. For foreigners making connections to other international flights, it is ridiculous to require the ESTA if you are only connecting. "sigh"

One minor correction: the upper level is for departures, and the lower level is for arrivals. Other than that, yeah, LAX can either be a nightmare to navigate or (if you get super lucky and know your way around) smooth-ish.

If you're arriving there's no way to the departues post-security area which is the nice part - you have to exit to the street. You could go upstairs to departures outside-security, but that sucks - overcrowded, little seating and crummy expensive food. The outside-security areas pretty much blow in all the terminals. Go to In-N-Out and watch the planes land.

Chris, few tips: 1. The G line Aviation shuttle is probably the best shuttle at LAX, its supposed to run every 7 minutes, 24/7. It's usually around ever 10=12 minutes; because it is a LAX shuttle it gets to use the priority bus lane in arrivals which has almost 0 traffic, never takes more than 8-9 minutes to go from T1-T7 in that lane. 2. T7 (United) and at a stretch T6 (Alaska) is pretty fast to get to, just take the shortcut right after T1 either upstairs or downstairs. 3. Depending on the time of day, it is much faster to go to arrivals in the morning (downstairs) and departures during the evening (upstairs) regardless of if you're actually arriving or departing. Each terminal has 3 or 4 escalators/elevators to switch between arrivals and departures.

I’ve flowed out of and into LAX all my life, I’ve never been stuck, never taken an hour around the loop, never taken 2 hours to go through the facets as you say. People just don’t do their basic homework. LAX is simple to navigate, it’s a loop…Terminals 1, 2, 3 Bradley (International), 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. I’ve seen people come out of Bradley and go wait for a shuttle to go to T3, when T3 is right there next door, a 5 minute walk 😂, so again, most people complicate their lives by not doing their basic homework, then they blame the airport.

When I visited LA back in 2012, it was my first time flying outside of Norway, and to be honest, I actually found the transit at Newark airport to be way more stressfull. Mainly cause I struggled to find the right gate, and each employee I asked, gave me different directions. I would say I’ve flown into or out of LAX about a 100 times in my life, and watching your video makes me feel that I’ve been astoundingly lucky. I have encountered the kind of traffic you’re describing around the loop, but maybe ten percent of the time. My usual routine means LAX is the destination, not a transfer spot, and I usually walk right out of the terminal to the Flyaway buses, which are inexpensive and frequent, and I’m usually on my way out of the airport and onto the 405 in a short amount of time. 🤷‍♂️

I agree. And it usually takes about 20 minutes to srive around the horseshoe. Rarely does it take an hour. Maybe on certain holidays it might take twice as long. Just flew in and out of LAX and it wasn't bad, but I chose to fly on Tuesdays in January for just that reason-and with a good price. PS, had to change my flight the day before on United economy and they charged me all of 30 cents. I was shocked. I am hoping the People Mover and the CONRAC car rental facility will make things easier and should ease up on the horseshoe jam. I asked my shuttle driver if he will lose his job. He just threw his hands up. Last summer I found it cheaper to fly into Vegas and rent a car there and drive to LA. Summertime both flight and rental in Vegas were half the price of LA. Saved almost $1000. Keep them coming, the vids are full of useful info. Thanks.

The good thing is that most of the negative issues regarding LAX will be fixed in a couple of years. All the terminals are getting renovated and/or expanded All the terminals will finally be connected behind security. The People Mover will make accessing the airport more convenient LAX will add three new terminals/concourses: Concourse 0, terminal 9, and an addition to the relatively new Mid Field West terminal. They arw also adding significant amount of landscape greenery within the horseshoe and possibly a water feature too. Everything should be ready by the 2028 Olympics except for the new terminal 9.

Boston Logan is sometimes VERY overcrowded & congested. Bradley International in Hartford, CT is small but a decent & clean airport. Miami International (MIA: "Missing in Ambience") is UTTERLY DISGUSTING! The West Palm Beach & Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa & Orlando airports are all MUCH nicer. I've never flown in and out of San Jose, so I can't speak to Minetta International. People complain about Chicago O'Hare (ORD) but I didn't find it that bad. Chicago Midway (MDW) is pretty ok too.

To get out of horseshoe, you have to be in a rare crazy traffic situation for an hour delay. Usually it will be 15-20 mins to drive around the entire horseshoe , make sure you keep left and do not take the parking entrances (which again are on the left lane). For departure flights, pls add an hour to what it usually be for other airports. Traffic is bad at the horseshoe section just in front of TBIT, and i have been dropped in front of domestic terminals. From there you have to walk to TBIT. Also, the security lines can go really long in no time. so pls make sure you have ample time for such unforeseen events.

Unfortunately for me, I use LAX for both leisure and occasionally business trips. LAX’s horseshoe, LAX IT (rideshare area), and lack of direct public transportation are reasons to avoid the airport. Just about the only saving grace are the proximity of the airport hotels though parking there is ridiculously expensive. I have flown into DFW many times and always impressed with the sky link with quick access to the terminals. That is real progress. Come on. It isn't that bad. "it can often take one hour to go around the airport loop?" When was that? Did someone get hit by a car, and it took them an hour to pick up all the body parts? Things are improving. The terminal footprint area is relatively small, and the airport needs to deal with decisions that were made going back to the 1950's. You can't blame that on airport management.

TSA leave a lot to be desired and at best 20 minutes to get through but usually an hour - it is the pits. I feel sorry for all the thousands who are going to come over for the Olympics they will quickly realise how poorly managed the TSA is at LAX and as for the horseshoe don’t get me started allow yourselves an hour. I haven't been to Los Angeles since 2016 and just recently took a trip to LA in May and realized the rental car shuttles now drop you off downstairs at Arrivals instead of upstairs at Departures so you'll need to catch an elevator or escalator upstairs to check in for your flight. I guess that's one way of eliminating some of the traffic upstairs at Departures.

Pro tip about flying into LA: you don’t necessarily need to use LAX. Depending on where you are staying in the greater LA/Orange/Riverside area, one of the smaller airports would be far more convenient. Going to Disneyland? Fly into John Wayne. Hollywood and the Valley? Burbank. Long Beach, Ontario, San Bernardino: all could be better choices to fly into. I actually met a family visiting La Jolla who flew in through LAX not realizing there was an international airport in downtown San Diego. Travel Smart.

I’m glad most of my flights are out of Ontario, since I live 20 minutes away from it (Redlands). Very simple loop to hit the terminals. Southwest is the busiest terminal there, but it’s still an in and out operation with police there to monitor the traffic flow. Check in and TSA process is mostly smooth. Not a lot of food options apart from a Carl’s Jr. but with short wait times for arrivals, it’s not a dealbreaker. And of course, parking is a lot cheaper, but most times I only need to be dropped off and picked up. Seems like LAX is only worth using for international travel, but if San Bernardino Int’l starts getting more domestic and international airlines, I may save a trip to LAX.

LAX used to be clean. Looked like a mall, with lots of stores and restaurants. It was an airport that belong in the first country that we are supposed to be. I was just there about a week ago and now the bathrooms are dirty, not once I saw a janitor cleaning. The tables had layers of dirt, which means no one ever wipes them. We pay a tax when we buy airlines tickets that is supposed to be designated to cleaning and sanitation. We Californians pay a lot of taxes to have a dirty airport. We even saw a homeless inside the bathroom by the luggage claim area when we returned home.

Only flew into LAX in 1993 when I went to Southern California and Disneyland. But my coworker as his sister lives in Irvine his family flies into Orange County-John Wayne Airport as it's close to where his sister lives, and they have nonstop flights on United out of Newark Liberty which is more convenient than LAX. You should do one on the three NYC airports (JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty) as the other options there for regional airports are Westchester County, Long Island, Tweed-New Haven, Newburgh, Lehigh Valley, Trenton, Philadelphia (Note Philadelphia is a major airport), or Atlantic City.

After that terrible experience, I started using SFO instead as port of entry, which is a much more pleasant airport to navigate because of the air-train.

The problem with LAX like many U.S. airports is that parking fees are a major source of revenue for the airport. The people mover that is currently under construction should alleviate some of the traffic congestion. That alone will eliminate the number of car rental shuttle buses going around the horseshoe. So much of the surrounding area near LAX is auto oriented hence parking structures and acres of parking lots, but that's all over the U.S. The several billion dollar upgrading of LAX will connect all eight terminals once passengers go through security. LAX is getting more and more revenue from more retail in the terminals. The international terminal is literally a huge shopping mall with a captive audience waiting for flights.

I have never been a fan of LAX. Grew up in Los Angeles and my father flew every week he would always try to use Burbank if at all possible but would often have to use LAX. At that time there was a bus from Pasadena to the Airport that helped out so there was no driving involved. The only time LAX wasn't bad growing up was due to the tragedy was we flew out just a few days after PSA flight 182 crashed (which my dad was supposed to be on) and that week LAX was a ghost town. Once the people mover is operational (hopefully it doesn't have problems like many other airport people movers) and the consolidated rental car facility opens hopefully traffic will ease up at the airport itself. Wish they would allow transit directly into the airport but they are afraid it would hurt their parking revenues. Flew out of LAX on United in February, a red-eye flight that left at 11:55pm and the terminal was packed, there were no seats available and people were sitting on the floor everywhere making it impossible to walk between them.

LAX airport is best navigated on foot, if you are able. I've even walked to the Hyatt Regency and Hyatt House/Hyatt Place. Nice hotels. The In and Out Burger slightly north of the airport is an ok walk too and the plane-spotting there is stunning. LAX is a busy airport due to the generally fantastic SoCal weather. There are rare times this airport is impacted by local weather causing delays. The 4 runways are parallel, so there is no odd criss-crossing like some airports. Air traffic flows in and out of LAX at high volume consistently and well. The airport people mover will add an easier option for getting in and out of LAX. Avoid using a car or bus if you can. These are tips I've learned over 4 decades of successfully utilizing LAX.
