Very useful tips for surviving long haul flights in economy. Learn how to step off the flight refreshed and ready to face the world, rather than exhausted and ready to collapse. Getting a good sleep in economy can be quite difficult, but it's still possible, especially if you employ some of these tips.

Never sit behind a summo wrestler in economy. Longest flight of my life as he strained, shifted and pushed off the seat in front of him with his seat back millimeters from my nose. How that seat didn't break is amazing. I was convinced I was going to die.

My wife teases me, but for our 2 week trip to Hawaii I laid everything out on the guest bed a month before the trip. I made a checklist. There were things I wanted to add, I ordered them, tried them out, some I used some I didn’t. I was good to go to the airport. Her sister was staying with us the night before the trip. She showed up 4 hrs late at 10 pm to our house with a garbage bag of dirty clothes that needed to be washed for the trip.

My game plan is typically to pick an aisle seat. That way, I don't have to be disturbed when row mates have to get up. When they get up, if i feel like I have to use the restroom or it's been a whole, I'll go to. I do tend to get up less that others, so it works for me. I also use a sking for my feet, compression sicks, and do ankle pumps every so often to help reduce the risk of clotts.

I'm not sure I follow you - if you're in the AISLE seat, how does that mean you're not disturbed with people have to get up? They will have to get past you to get out of the row. I'm window seat all the way. I can lean against the fuselage and get more comfortable for sleeping. No one is waking me up to crawl over me to go to the lavatory (I time my own visits for when the other person gets up - then I take advantage of that to go myself.). Best of all, I'm not jostled all night long by people walking up and down the aisles.

Great tips Chris! I find choosing the best airline makes a huge impact the difference in space and hidden costs (like charging for seat selection or taking hold luggage). From my experience the Arab airlines are the best and if flying transatlantic then Virgin is hands down the best option. We always look at Seat Guru too!

My favourite fellow passenger on my last flight was the mother who told her kid to stop kicking my seat. If the kid refuses to stop, ask the person sitting behind the kid to kick the kids' seat for a while. That might get the message across.

When traveling as a family with small kids, we always put one family member in the row in front of our youngest so if she kicked the seat, it wouldn’t be a stranger’s seat. We always taught our kids to not kick or lean on the seat in front of them.Now they are all rock star travelers.

@@hrw3mom103 Wow, great idea, and very considerate! Even the best behaved kids are going to get squirmy when confined to a small space for a long time. A parent can keep an eye on it, and remind the child to not kick the seat, but occasionally it is going to happen. What a good idea to seat one of the parents in front of the child. Thanks for sharing this idea.

There is NO air flowing through a exit door. Its perfectly airtight. Its often cooler because the aircon vents in those areas are fully open where many passengers close theirs. It assists cabin ventilation. The lack of overhead luggage is a perfect location of the aircon units above exit rows

When I was 11 I flew on a *BIG* plane, from Denver, I think it was Air Canada. I was loaded first (by the Paramedics) into the bulkhead row and outfitted with a mattress insert, sheets, pillows, slippers, hot towels, snacks, a foam wedge and a super soft blanket. It was like magic, and I felt like a princess. A Nurse travelled with me in a bulkhead seat across the aisle. The Nurse even brought me a couple "teen" celebrity magazines, so I felt ever so cosmopolitan and grown up 🤣 A couple decades later we flew with WestJet for one of my childrens' "Wish Trip", with "Make-A-Wish". Holy cow, they took SUCH good care of us! 😮 Airplane crews are amazing, and it is very cool how they can customize some seats. ❤️

Very information. Thank you. There are a few economy flight practices that I live by. I stopped wearing shorts on flights when, one time, a neighbor with hairy legs invaded my space and touched my leg. Nevermore! I used to fly Southwest a lot and I found that, especially one a full flight, it's better not to board early. It's better to choose you neighbors and than have someone choose you. I always wear compression socks on flights. Unfortunately they are not wool but they could save my life.

I'm watching this looking down the barrel of a 15-hour flight from Sydney to LAX. I have an inflammatory condition so it hurts me every time. I've invested in a better neck pillow and booked the aisle seat to get up and move regularly. I also bought a fuzzy coat that doubles as a blanket. I'm taking my own food because I'm vegan and gluten-free and the airline will only do one or the other. I'm taking rice paper rolls, dolmades and veggo sushi (bought the night before - won't be too bad), falafel bites and fruit instead of standard plane food.

Great recommandations. Even if I feel pretty much familiar with that. Interesting that the SAS airline was mentioned. I traveled twice from SFO to Copenhagen and that was one of the cleanest aircrafts I ever experienced. Even in the eco class enough legroom and the food was okay so far. Heading to Europe I always avoid to fly with Lufthansa and Delta. United and American Airlines are acceptable and if possible , I'd recommend Air France. Unbelievable, how good their food and their drinks are while on air.....

The longest flight was from Toronto to L.A. to Sydney NSW on United. I paid $1g returned at the end of Dec. '19 & beginning of Jan. '20. Was an amazing New Year's celebration in Sydney. I did get a seat pretty much in the middle besides the emergency exit door, but just across from the jump seat where one of the flight attendants sat. Not recommended & your right about seeking seats closer to the back, hopefully, where you get three rows to yourself.

Thanks for the video and tips! Wer'e planning a trip to Europe, so along flight there and back from MCO. A couple tips/thoughts - Instead of taking two empty water bottles through security, fill at least one half full of water, then freeze. They limit liquids and gels going through security, but solids (aka, ice) are allowed. Then when you fill it with water from the fountain, you will have ice cold water. - On our long haul flight with Norse, there are no free snacks or drinks - just water. - And here's a question: If we bring snacks onto the flight and don't eat them all, or if we are given free snacks on a (non-Norse) flight , I'm assuming that we have to declare these as food items when going through customs?
@YellowProductions
@YellowProductions 5 ай бұрын
Great tip on the ice. Regarding food.. generally as long as it's not meat/seafood/fresh fruit or vegetables then you don't have to declare it. For example.. potato chips don't cause anyone a problem 😋
@cathyh1680
@cathyh1680 5 ай бұрын
If you come into Australia you have to declare all food no matter what it is or you will be heavily fined. Anything that also has cheese, milk or any kind of grain, seed in it as well as meat, eggs, fruit, vegies etc. is considered high risk (chips usually have milk as an ingredient) but it's against the law to fail to declare any food no matter what it is. A pilot got into trouble for bringing his un-eaten avocado from lunch through customs undeclared in his back pack. The rule is declare everything then you won't be in trouble - they will just sort through what you can take through and take what you can't and incinerate it or confiscate if it isn't a food item.

Chris, you mentioned how it's a good idea to take the snacks when offered and then store them in your seat pocket for later. It's a small point, but it's worth noting that the seat pocket is disgusting. It's a bad idea to put food items in there. Goodness knows what you may expose yourself to by storing even packaged food in the seat pocket.

Yes, this! My last two trips to Europe I went Delta One, and the flight was actually an ENJOYABLE part of the trip rather than something to be tolerated. On one of my flights home, I was actually disappointed when they announced that we'd be landing soon! I was so relaxed and comfortable - watching movies on a "big" screen my cozy little pod and being served snacks and drinks - that I wasn't in any hurry to face the hustle and bustle of disembarking, going through customs, collecting luggage, etc. I wanted to keep flying for a couple more hours!

I don't fly very often - just a couple times a year but last year, both times I flew, the airline switched out the plane the same day. Suddenly we were in a smaller plane with less legroom, less overhead bin storage, no in-flight entertainment. That was frustrating because I paid more for my ticket to get an airline with a good reputation and they still did that to us. I would have booked a less expensive flight with another carrier if I had known. This has happened a few times in recent times.

I would say your suggestions for IFE is perfect. Ipad Mini with Sony noise cancelling HFones. Dont depend upon Airlines. Only info I look from Airlines is live positions of the aircraft, altitude and other flying informations. Nothing else. The main advantage of IpadMini is you can carry in your passport bag which you dont need to put on overhead compartment and can keep easily on the tray in front of your seat with very less space . Sony Headfones can easily connect with Blue tooth.

I was so glad I had an iPad loaded with movies on a trip to Europe when my IFE wasn't working. The FAs told me that to try to restore it, they would have to shut the whole system down for a reset which would affect all the other passengers, so of course I could say, "no problem, I brought my own." AND they gave me 30,000 Sky Miles for my trouble!

Super excellent presentation, Chris. This one is pack full of wonderful tips; highly informative and useful. Thanks a bunch for sharing. P.S. At 6’8” there is never enough leg room for me at the economy isles. Ironically enough, however, it’s not the lack of leg room per se that gives me the most grief but the excruciating tailbone pain (aka coccydynia or coccygodynia) when I sit for extended periods of time in those hard narrow seats. I injured my coccyx as a teenager during a fall, and ever since then I suffer from severe pain when I sit for too long. The fact that my skinny arse tush is not well cushioned doesn’t help either. 😂 Anyway, my question is: Do you think that those so-called round Tailbone/hemorrhoid type pillows with a hole in the middle that you could sit on might be helpful in this case, or would it be just another piece of useless junk to carry around? Thanks for any feedback on this issue that you could offer.

I could have used those tips a long time ago, even though not all of it would have been applicable back then. I unfortunately didn't fly much in my life. I only took 4 long range flights so far, both almost 20 years ago when I flew to China for an internship as a student and later flew there again to meet the parents of my girlfriend. Both were brutal, unpleasant, even grueling experiences. Back then you didn't have screens and entertainment systems in every seat, at least not in economy class and the old Jumbo Jets really didn't provide any comfort at all. It was cold, loud and my ears would pop over and over the whole time, 12 to 13 hours straight. Because of that, I doubt that even first or business class flights were all that great back then. People just didn't know anything better, I suppose.

Can't IMAGINE anyone preferring the middle seat between two spouses! Almost wonder if she did it to spite you for some reason. That makes NO sense.

I like Singapore airlines anything! Their economy is good too! However I do like the extra leg room in my United Economy Plus... for me that 3 extra inches makes a big deal!

Something I learned traveling in winter is pack your slick fabric down jacket and wear a sweater on the plane because that slick down jacket slides all around when you place it on top of your under seat luggage

They make items like the airfly pro that lets you convert the 3.5mm from the airplane to bluetooth that you can connect to so the wireless headphones can still work!

People that weigh more than 250 pounds MUST be required to purchase TWO seats, otherwise they flow and spread over onto your lap. Yeccchhh.

Hi, Chris thank you soooo much for the content!!! Leaving for Melbourne in United on Sunday I am caught in a dilemma: I am 5´4 would paying the upgrade to economy plus for the leg room be worth it??? Also, I have looked up meals for this flight for economy, and it says there is only one meal - dinner, is that true??? again thank you so much for the content you´ve helped me and my husband on so many trips!!

I think at 5'4" you'll be just fine in the regular econ seat. And for your flight to Melbourne if you're coming from the US they will serve a meal about an hour after departure. A mid flight snack typically of sandwiches, and a pre arrival meal about 2 hours before arrival

I flew from Sydney to Honolulu, 10 hours plus long full flight and I was stuck next to someone who had some mental issues was yelling, cussing and blowing her nose in her hand and wiping it on her clothes the entire flight. All I could think was she was eventually going to run out of dry spots in her clothes and aim for mine, so I stood in the back of the plane the entire flight except take off and landing. Horrible experience!
