I really love yuju, I really do but she's straining her cords too much hitting that high note, she reached it no doubt but you can see the huge effort she put into it. Come on Yuju your voice is gold, work on your technique, don't strain your cords

SFgamerPOP there's absolutely something wrong with their vocal teacher and stuff. Yuju keep on straining and the rest didn't even improve much except that they are more stable. I notice this kinda thing with other groups too.

I have the same problem actually, my technique is usually very good but when it comes to high notes I get stressed and strain instead of support... Still working on it though :) I really hope that they'll get a new vocal teacher who can guide the girls better.

Now that you bring it up, let me go on a little rant here: The problem is Yuju has a big and heavy voice, and she sings in full chest voice, with full involvement of the TA muscles. There's no "easy" way of hitting high notes with chest voice when your voice is heavy. Stamina takes a lot of work to develop. If she started using "mix voice" or SLS techniques she'd probably lose her trademark "full" chesty sound. But maybe Yuju's timbre is really beautiful so maybe she still shines with a thinner, less rich, less chesty sound. I definitely prefer full voices, the problem is I hate seeing Yuju straining. I think a possible solution would be to give Yuju less high notes so that she stays more in her tessitura, more comfortable. But Yuju's F5 in Me Gustas Tu is wonderful exactly because it's sung in covered chest voice, not a weak "mix" voice. Have you watched Yuju's Let it Go cover? It's in her old personal youtube channel (Choi Yuna). You can see her voice in action more clearly in that video. It's a HUGE voice, her thyroaritenoid muscles are all engaged, and that's how that song should be sung. On a side note, as Yuju sings in chest voice, she *covers* her voice like old school male operatic singers do (I wonder if she learned alone), she does it usually after the C5 (even though in the studio version of Spring is gone by Chance she belts out a D5 in a fully open, uncovered sound). Now let's speak a little about the rest. I agree with you they need singing lessons. But the rest need it more than Yuju! They need to learn to sing more like Yuju, to use their voices. The rest of them, specially Sowon, sound like they're afraid of singing, like they are holding back. Eunha's voice for example is very different to Yuju's, her voice is high and light, so even if her technique is bad she can still go up to an F5, but obviously with a much thinner and severely less rich round than Yuju. They all seem to have problems with staying on pitch though :/ I think, and hope, that it's when they can't hear the backing track. I really don't like the fact that they never sing without a voice backing track, even in quiet ballads with no dance like Mermaid or Sunshine. That is unaccepable IMO! The backing track is only acceptable when they have to dance, because there's no reason they shouldn't be able to sing without it, and on top of that, it sounds really bad, sloppy and unprofessional.

'they never sing without a voice backing track', you couldnt be more wrong. they are actually one of the few groups (especially amongst the newer groups) who do sing with zero/minimal backing track sometimes. Most programs/events have protocols for groups to have a backing track as they want to show a good performance, of course having a backing track to help would sound better. Most listeners are casual listeners and not music critics they just care about the song sounding good, they dont really care about professionalism. If you can find and look at cue sheets, Gfriend is actually among the few that actually use MR instead of AR. If you look at their showcases, they actually perform without/with minimum backing tracks.

Sacredproz gosh their back track is so damn loud. How can you say they sing with minimal back track???? Even in radio station where they don't have to dance, the back track is still so loud! If you really wanna listen to minimal back track then go watch mamamoo. I love gfriend but it's fucking delusional to even say this. Go watch performance where umji is absent. When members cover her part, none of them can oversing umji's back track except for yuju.
