Singapore Social is neither a reality show nor created for a Singaporean audience but for an Angmoh audience fed on Crazy Rich Asians. Actually, most people speak like Yeolo.. not Singlish but good local accented English.... thanks for this... I saved my 1 hr

That show is so lame! 1) firstly, Singaporeans don’t talk like that 2) they over rated the average Singaporeans lifestyle by projecting it at too high a bar 3) the cast tried too hard, resulted in them appearing pretentious 4) the script writer and director seems to be living in their airy castle and are not in touch with reality 5) too many Ang Mohs, and Ang Mohs are really not within our social landscapes, they are tourists and expats who usually socialize among themselves. 6) this show simply failed to connect with the targeted audience . It’s a big failure!

Haven’t watched your video yet but the accents really threw me off. Are they born and raised in Singapore? Their accents sounded like a weird combination of Australian and English. I know Indians who speak English tend to have the “British” influence in their accent sometimes. I’m not familiar with Singaporean culture but these people don’t seem like they’re from Singapore to me.
@kageyamareijikun4 жыл бұрын
Nicky1026 none of their accents are Singaporean. I bet a good number of them are not even real Singaporeans. Their accents are a mangled mess of trying to sound American. They are not trying to sound British or Australian. If they do, it's because their attempts at a real American accent is a complete disaster.

You'll hear the same weird accent with our Singaporean radio DJ's (I hate it so much lol)! I'm guessing that it's a combination of thinking that "Western" accents make you sound cooler/more sophisticated, and that they think that the Singaporean accent is annoying or "unrefined"?
@narwhallllll84754 жыл бұрын
I, for one, wholeheartedly disagree. I think there’s really nothing wrong with the way they speak. I came from an IJ school and quite a lot of us talk like this. When I left, I was also labeled as “pretentious” because LEMME GET DIZ STRAIGHT: It’s just the way we were taught to speak. Pls don’t be hatin’ us for things we were taught to do. P.s. Yes we are just as Singaporean as the rest of Singapore, okay?
@narwhallllll84754 жыл бұрын
@Rose LOL ok ah lian/minahrep. You win liao lor. This is unfortunately the same rhetoric I get from people who come from neighbourhood schools. Not all of us from IJ schools live the "Singapore Social" life, despite sounding like we do. Love the vid! I’m an American expat in SG and when I first saw the trailer I immediately tagged it as a “reality” show in my head and didn’t think it would ever represent the avg young Singaporean as it is produced for pure entertainment. Or at least attempts to. Just like how something like the kardashians or real housewives don’t represent the avg American and everyone knows that. Do you think because this is the first highly-accessible (internationally) “reality” show based in Singapore, that the avg young Singaporean was hoping it actually would represent them somehow? Completely understand if so, just wondering about the local perspective.
@gracewong28064 жыл бұрын
To answer your question... Perhaps. Though I think it isn't so much as us wanting to be represented correctly because of the international viewers. I personally hate watching many of our local productions because again, it isn't the Singapore we know. I don't think it is as simple as "There isn't Singlish" or "All their accents are fake" but more of the ENTIRE script/writing/acting is way off. For example...the problems that these characters have aren't relatable in ANY way whatsoever. It's like a movie that portrays modern Americans talking about having household issues with their slaves. Doesn't make sense right? Neither does this show.

I watched the whole thing, and basically was left feeling like, none of what they were doing would be actually allowed in mainstream Singapore. I could be wrong, but it’s a super monitored “police state” like you said, and it also has some pretty restrictive laws and rules when it comes to how some Foreigners (especially from the West) would feel about certain things being okay. I agree with you, it felt super scripted and was an interesting break from American TV for the simple fact it was filmed in Singapore, and I’ve never been, but it did happen to make me appreciate how clean and beautiful Singapore is. I was literally like, how gorgeous... - also, hilarious commentary btw. I laughed out loud more than once.
