Fun fact: the Ma Xiao Tiao stories in the chinese textbooks are based on this children's book series called 淘气包马小跳 (literal trans: "Mischief Maker Ma Xiao Tiao", known in English as "Mo's Mischief"). It's basically the most popular children's book series in mainland China from the 2000s-early 2010s, and catapulted the author Yang Hongying into widespread fame almost instantly (heck, she's now known as China's JK Rowling). Since then, Yang Hongying has also written a spin-off called 笑猫日记 ("Diary of a Smiling Cat"), which surrounds a cat that appears as a recurring character in the original Ma Xiao Tiao series. As a second-gen Chinese migrant who spent their childhood being absolutely obsessed over this series, it's kinda wack to see secondary school kids simping for Ma Xiao Tiao lol, especially right now when it's been more than a decade since the series' initial release. This doesn't mean that the source material is cringe though; there are many loveable and iconic characters, not to mention wholesome storylines and a lot of funky humour! Even now the stories resonate with me when I look back to my childhood that I didn't fully cherish, and I really do recommend it to everyone regardless of your age. Especially if you'd like to brush up on your Chinese lmao edit: omg forgot to add that the original Ma Xiao Tiao series is set in PRIMARY SCHOOL. Ma Xiao Tiao hasn't even gone through puberty yet please don't sexualise him thank you.
