I'm sorry everyone. I was threatened with action by a company which claimed it owned the copyright. I replied that I would remove it if they could prove it to me, but they just ignored my request. I left it up until youtube themselves removed it "at the copyright holders request".

It is sad when people make claims on rights they pretend to be entitled to. What monetary gains could they be loosing with this video? if they do have any rights. It would be an entire different matter if the operetta was published in its entirety and in HD....which is not the case.

Is there any chance you'd be willing to upload the full video on a site like mediafire or mega.nz? As far as I can tell, there isn't a copy anywhere online right now, and it would be a shame if it was lost completely.

@@drewbakka5265 I love the Joel Gray version. I hate Jack Point looking like a clown or jester, it kills my sympathy for him. He can be as plain as you like but not a buffoon.

@@anniespencer7879bro because you are a fellow g&s enjoyed I am going to give you something g you would never get in a youtube commet: a good faith argument. The joel grey one is poor because 1. They cut a LOT of the songs which is a crime because this is gilber and sulivans best fusion of comic and serious opera 2. Joel grey is a musical performer and that doesn't translate well to operatic singing 3. In my oponion jack point should be dressed as a jester for the first act, standard clothes for the second act and jester for the finale. It blends the face he puts on as an act and his inner termoil Please forgive the spelling errors I am very innerbtrated

This is good. This is such a wonderful operetta. The end, with this same song, is a real tearjerker. I would like to see this guy's version. I watched another full length version on KZbin a couple of days ago, and I can't get this song out of my mind. It's a real earworm!

I always thought that no-one could do this better than the recording of Martyn Green and Muriel Harding (early 1950s), but this is unbelievably good, so glad I found the clip and I can't understand why you can't get it on DVD. Valerie Masterson is indeed divine David, a beautiful and talented woman. Derek Hammond-Stroud had a very hard act to follow, but exceeded it. This is a class above.

Thank you for your comment. It's not available because the BBC are keeping it in their archive. I can only imagine that they will show it when they won't have to pay any royalties! I have it on DVD but it's the directors edition with the timestamp embedded. I can't make it available for obvious reasons. The director gave a copy to Derek, who then gave it to me a few years ago.

I was fortunate to have seen this when it was first broadcast on BBC TV, and wish I could see it again. It is is an absolute gem of a performance - Derek Hammond-Stroud and Valerie Masterson were superb. I agree with all the replies here and share the frustration of those who are unable to find a copy of the full performance. I've search high and low but cannot trace a copy anywhere.

For my money the definitive performance of this classic. Valerie Masterson as an Elsie Maynard to die for, and Derek Hammond-Stroud brought so much feeling to Jack Point

Astounding version Hard to believe Sullivan went to his grave actually regretting that he would not be remebered for "serious music" but material like this instead. Again, astounding.

Would love to know if this operetta is available on DVD. I saw it on PBS in the late 1970s and am thrilled that this aria is posted. Derek Hammond-Stroud gives an interesting interpretation of Jack Point; not the usual patter-song timbre. Valerie Masterson is divine. One of the best operettas by Gilbert & Sullivan.
