My Absolute favourite G&S opera

Just shy of the Holy Trinity, no other triumvirate rivals the G&S&Carte juggernaut. Even Churchill marveled at the exquisite manipulation of lyrics by Gilbert. Other great Brits deserve respect. Newton discovered Gravity but he could not hummm it. Maxwell described EM phenomena with his prodigious equations but he couldn't choreograph them.

With all respect to G&S the modern technological revolution could never have been without Newton's and Maxwell's equations.

This is a superb performance with great singers who really know how to act in a modern style with none of that Victorian proclaiming which tainted the reputation of these works. What´s more, the semi-staging seems more effective than a full blown production might have been. And what music! As in Mozart, there are moments, maybe just a couple of bars, which are unbearably exquisite (the female trio at the end 2.11.25), and other sequences which rival the greatest moments of opera. The arrival of the executioner in Act 1 (1.12.05), and the opening of Act 2 are fantastic.

I enjoyed this but I am sorry to disagree. The singing is very good but the presentation and production suffers in comparison to a full staged production with proper costumes of the period. I have seen Yeoman of the Guard performed many times on stage by the D'Oyly Carte Company and never found their performances "Victorian" and their singing was as always excellent.

Right near the end 2:18:30, does Mark Stone sing, "whose soul was sad and he craved no crumb"? What's that about?

Didn't Kennedy sound strained and a bit out of tune in the aria in the second act?

Why is Jane Glover rushing so many of the tempi?
@rockflowerful4 ай бұрын
I think it is the fashion of the times to play everything faster than it used to be. Mainly because they can. Modern life does not stand and stare, concierge, savour each moment or each musical phrase. Often actors mumble and rush dialogue too. Hand writing is disappearing, words abbreviated u h is lost misses so much.! It speeds up life but
