I was curious about this production when I heard about it, how could Yeomen be updated to the 1950's? I would still prefer a traditional production.

I like it. Maybe we could get one updated to the grim 2020s - we could use some humor right now.

Do you have ENO's iolanthe?

There are some clips on KZbin, but the full version has never been officially released.

I’m watching this again, because theatrically there’s so much more to like & admire than not, but I have to wonder: was the overture ruined in the theatre too, or was the video & VO for the tv audience? If it were done in a live performance, it displays a disrespect for the material, in an otherwise fascinating production.

Clearly the video credits and VO were for the broadcast.

It was ruined indeed.

I’d also like to add my admiration for the Jack Point. His voice suits his character. A more operatic voice would get in the way.

Disagree. If you're doing opera, even light opera, the baseline for any character should be a competent reading of the score in the proper fach for which it was written.

His tempis are very slow and, while I do agree comic baritone shouldn't sound like an average opera singer, the performer should still be able to sing in rythm and in correct pitch. I much prefer Simon Butteriss as Jack Point.
