What a nice podcast! In Korea, everyone is born with an age, and the age increases as the year changes. For example, a baby born on 12/31/2022 is considered 1 year old when they are born and 2 years old on 1/1/2023. Therefore, theoretically, even a baby born on 12/31 can be 2 years old one day after they are born. When asked about our age, we typically answer with the age calculated in this way. However, for official purposes, such as filling out forms, we use offical age, "만 나이" in Korean, which is calculated differently. It can be confusing for Koreans, so I distinguish between the two as follows: If you were born in 2003, subtract 2003 from the current year (2023) and add 1, since being born with an age means that you already have one year of age and can count all the years you have passed. The result is 21, which is your Korean age. If you have already passed your birthday this year, subtract 1 from your Korean age, so your official age would be 20 (counting from your birthday). However, if you have not yet had your birthday this year, subtract 2 from your Korean age to determine your official age (e.g., 19 years 10 months).

Every January 1st, all Koreans turn a year older simultaneously. You're considered a year old as soon as you are born. A baby whonis born on December 31st is considered two uears old the next day. He or she would only be a day older than a baby who is born on January 1st but would still be considered a year older. All the other countries count thier ages by how many years you've lived since your day of birth. In other words , you turn a year older each year on your birthday which is what we call the international age. In places like government offices and hospitals, they use this so- called international age.
