A fairly popular Japanese Vtuber who goes by the name Pikamee, had to cancel her entire stream she planned for playing the game, with tons of people attacking and harassing her. It's insulting when you realise that not only is she probably the most harmless and sweetest streamer you'll ever come across, but also the fact the people harassing her are assuming she MUST have known about the drama. Despite the fact she lives in Japan, and bullshit that's happening in the West will have a good chance of not reaching her at all. The people who are attacking innocent people for daring to play a videogame, are doing more harm to trans acceptance then anything Rowling has ever said. And it sucks, because there's really nothing wrong with just saying you're not playing the game because you dislike the author. Many people don't play Blizzard games due to a ton of horrific crap that company has done, and people should be able to choose to not play games based on things they disagree with. Helps that pretty much most people agree that Rowling is an asshat anyways. But harassing others and trying to force them to not play it, will only harm everyone. Harry Potter was always about Hogwarts. Its the main setting and its really good, the Wizarding World as a whole doesn't really work but that doesn't matter when you spent 90% of every book before 7 in hogwarts. Once you remove all familiarity you just end up in britain with magic guns. A soft magic system leaves tons of room for story, it isnt gonna carry stuff on its own like a hard magic system might.

I couldn't even finish reading the series back in the day because the fourth book drained all my will to continue, there is background dialogue between NPCs in this game that I do not follow at all, it kind of looks terrible on my computer due to me not having upgraded it since before the microchip shortage hit and I'm still having a blast playing it. I mean, granted, the story does kind of frontload way too much how special you are as a character, and the character creator was limited enough that despite thinking that I picked a decently generic face I still end up looking like alternate universe HP that suffered a horrific stage pyrotechnics accident, but at least you don't start out with enough money to last you several lifetimes.

My friends bought the game to tick off twitter users, and they told me it was great so I picked it up myself. I've had a great time with it in the 3 hours I've played so far. When the Sorting Hat screamed my house name and my character it sitting there with the most stupid grin while everyone clapped, it felt like I was watching one of the early movies. It feels like when I played The Stick of Truth. I had one crash during my first class, but apart from that it's been buttery smooth on my 1060 with awful Loonix drivers. The combat kicks my butt, but I know I'm bad at video games and I just need to beat my skull against it until I get it. Honestly, I can't rate the game higher if you don't worry about the Ministry of Magic's tax policy. I think Dev is discounting the atmosphere, the sense of whimsy that made Harry Potter special. Harry himself was never particularly interesting, although he served as an interesting vantage point from which to view the world, given his place in it. The game captures that sense of whimsy, even if it's not as pure as it was in the books. If you liked that sort of thing, I think it's really worth a look.

I think the advantage of JKs books and why the others fail is cause JK wrote a really good Bording school mystery series with a whimsical window dressing that really fit this idea of becoming greater then you were. Fantastic Beasts and the rest dont do that because they arent fantastical or mysteries. Her skill is at characters, Umbridge is still one of the best villain's in literature (especially in the demographic the books in) but movies have less character work and her other stories try to be more serious while her characters are almost archetypical. They dont work in muted reality.

I get the tone that Rowling was going for in later books, but the whimsical funny magic world was always the main draw for me and it's what made it a comfy read. With the last three entries often lacking in that aspect, it feels like fuck-all happens 90% of the time even though the story is supposed to be much more serialized. Even in Deathly Hallows, which is meant to be really dense in story beats, more than half the plot happens in roughly the final third of the book. What made it even more hilarious to me was that I did before I even started my argument when someone else actually did provide evidence for me to parse over(it was a leftist article) and to me, it just looked rather reasonable answers. Nothing that could be construed as genuinely transphobic. However, I was putting the person to task by telling him that the onus was on him to provide proof to back up his accusations. It never materialized so I ended up calling him full of shit.

A funny thing about the transsexual character is that "Sirona" is an actual name. Think of it as an archaic version of Serena. It's also the name of a goddess of healing. Additionally, I remember people criticizing Sirona's voice despite the VA being a MtF transsexual.

Its not too pandering, not in your face, she has a side quest that you can explore her story if you are interested, and even then its never directly talked about. Her story is about HER as a person and not some bullshit, shoehorned Trans narrative. Its about the individual themselves, as it should be.

Like I said, its not in your face, doesn't force you to talk about it, no heavy handed or obvious pandering and agendas, Sirona just a normal person who happens to be trans. That's realistic.
