A mateada (Yerba mate drinking session) has occurred in #Philadelphia & #alfajores were eaten. Below are the basic steps to make your own mate. What started with a curious yoga student stumbling upon the Yerba Crew website and seeing their yoga instructor on it, ended with a collaboration between Yerba Crew and #PaloSantoWellnessBoutique to host a mateada . For a few hours, people curious about yerba mate were able to explore what yerba mate is and to try to make their first mate. It was a fun day to explore something new and for people to have fun with others from the local community. We’re hoping for many more mateadas to come.

Yerba mate prep - Quick Steps
- Pour yerba mate to fill your gourd (or cup) about ¾ full
- Place your hand on the top of the cup to seal it. Turn it over and shake. You just helped shift the smaller yerba particles to the top of the cup to help prevent them from sneaking into the bombilla later
- Flip the cup back over and check out your hand. If you see a green circle, then it means you will have a great day 😉.
- Shake the yerba so it shifts mostly to one side of the cup, forming a bit of a mountainside
- Pour about 2 oz of room temperature (or cold water) into the lower side (the valley) of your mountain. Let it settle for about 20 seconds. This isn’t required but its helpful for later.
- Slide the bombilla down the interior of the cup into the lower side of the mountain and shift the filter of the bombilla closer to the center bottom of the cup
- Pour about 2-3 oz of hot water (160 - 180°F) into your cup. Try to pour on the side of the cup where the bombilla is. This conserves the flavor of the other half of the yerba. As you keep refilling, you can start pouring farther and farther from the bombilla to unleash the flavor of the yerba that hasn’t been touching yet.
- Sip. Your first 1 or 2 sips will most likely not have much water in them and they may not be hot because the yerba leaves soak up most of the first pour and the warm water you poured in prior will mix with that hot water, cooling it a bit.
- Keep pouring and sipping. After you’ve sucked up all the water, just pour another 2-3 oz of water into your gourd and sip again. You can do this until you’ve poured over all the yerba and the flavor is no longer as strong as you’d like
- It's a good practice to use a thermos. You can brew your 160 - 180°F water and pour it into your thermos. Then you will just continue to pour the 2 - 3 oz of water and sipping until your thermos is empty.
