2:35 "You too should be vegetarian" comment by Chris Squire. Priceless!!!
@Kohntarkosz8 жыл бұрын
Circa 1974, all the Yes guys, except Rick, were vegetarians. A couple years before he passed away, Squire did an interview where this topic was brought up, and he said Steve was the only who was still a vegetarian and "That's why he looks like a fucking twig!". I've also heard it suggested that maybe one of the reasons Steve is always in such a foul mood is because he can't good vegetarian food on the road.

Honestly, I think Steve is just an extreme introvert, and unless he has a guitar in his hands he doesn't really know how to relate to other people. That of course doesn't excuse him being rude to others, but it might explain it a bit more clearly. If you met him and he was short with you, though, I wouldn't take it personally.
@CaseyVan8 жыл бұрын
He's nasty with the other members too. But keep in mind the image we see of Yes is totally different than the real Yes. They used to constantly bicker and hold grudges for wrong notes played 6 months ago. I think part of the reason Bruford quit was he was tired of arguing in the studio.
@jackeminor8 жыл бұрын
Casey Van Bruford quit for a few reasons. He was tired of the bright, poppy sound of Yes. He was tired of Chris Squire always running late and keeping others waiting. Really viewed it as the ultimate showing of disrespect to a fellow musician. He was tired of how boring Close to the Edge was in the recording phase for him personally, and he did hate the arguing that went on over just a half a step. Lastly, a band that he had been wanting to join now wanted him in. We all know what band that was. For me though, the music he recorded with Crimson from 72-74 wasn't superior to what he'd done with Yes up to that point.
@CaseyVan8 жыл бұрын
Jack Minor I like some of the things he did with KC. they were technically on a higher level. For a guy that likes improvised music his studio work really sounded impeccable with Yes, so that was on the whole better than most of KC's stuff which I liked for a while, but now I think much of it is nonsense.

I have my Steve Howe story. By the way he's probably my most influential guitarist, and I love his guitar playing, and music composition. He was playing in San Diego, and he's just starting to play his acoustic solo pieces but solo but stops, and says very plainly "This is not the song that you can clap on, the next song you can clap on." But when he says "clap" morons in the audience start clapping, so he says "Don't clap on this song, clap on the next one." again with not a trace of a nice English accent just plainly.

There's another clip I've seen from, I think from the same day, where Steve is playing a bit of To Be Over, and he abruptly stops and yells at the lighting guy. I think it must have been earlier in the day, because he only sounds just mildly annoyed in that bit, he doesn't sound quite so pissed.

If the promoter of a professional band has booked the venue stipulating that certain professional members of house crew (for whose services they will be paying) be available then it's no excuse suggesting that it was a kid from the local college. the fault lies squarely with the venue's stage or technical manager who should have dealt with an ongoing problem long before it reached boiling point. There's too much cost-cutting in the theatre business these days. Well said, Steve.
@rjb7035 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Imo, Howe's attitude here is inconsequential, generally speaking this is what soundchecks are for.. clearly there was an ongoing issue for him to speak up that way and even if there weren't i can understand his frustration, it's a simple problem with an equally simple solution, but bottom line is, attitude or not - this IS the time n place for just that.. better he be polite and not get the point across and have to deal with this during their performance..? I think not.. also it's kinda weird - don't many bands, especially ones of long running iconic status tour with their own sound engineer/lighting/rigging people.. Maybe not all but isn't that a thing? I find it hard to believe that whatever town they pull into on any given night for the gig -their whole show's sound/ light show/etc is dependent on whomever the local venue has as their regular open mic guy

I'm not justifying their ipotetical rude behaviour, i'm just saying that the fact that they do that sometimes might just be the result of constant exploitation, from both musicians and techs themselves, that's all.

As a guitarist myself having to perform live in front of a bunch of people, it can be frustrating if you don't have competent support folks; especially on sound & lights. Yet, you deal with it... CIVILLY. Steve came off as a tantrum-throwing prima donna, which I am willing to grace on account of his age, and his vegetarianism. lol! ;-) He needs to go and eat some red meat!

It's a lot easier to "judge" when this is a consistent pattern of behavior.

Howe should not be threatening anyone, he's a brittle twig of a man.

Another example of the "CLASSLESS" attitude that has become the by-word for Howe/Squire/White..I mean just look at the way they treated Benoit David. I bet that young guy on the spotlight could kick Howe's butt and then show him the meaning of 'Professional'. What a Prima Donna.

Never saw Steve lose the head before or since.Doesnt suit him, He'd have no chance against your average meat eater anyway.

Howe really takes himself seriously. Rabin seems to have more self-distance. Great guitarist though!

Steve Howe may be a great talent but he's an absolute prick of a human being. The fact that he simply replaced Alan White after he died a few weeks before the 2022 tour speaks volumes. Yet when his son died it was a different matter, all shows called off. This current lineup is all about one man's ego and it absolutely sucks. But I get the feeling Howe is loving the complete control of the band now that the other long-term members are either dead or no longer involved.

Anyone has Keys To Ascenssion Live 1996 DVD? See how Steve shows his middle finger at the end of a song (don't remember if it was at the end of "And You And I" or "The Revealing Science of God"). From that moment (1996) i realized that Steve Howe has a very bad attittude. I'm not surprised at this anymore. Many videos from a "stupidly-nonsense Howe here on KZbin. You see? This is what happens when you become into a veggie. Meat actually lower down negative emotions. Steve: THIS IS "YES" (POSITIVE), NOT "NO". Say Yes to a big piece of steak. Chris only bluffs at Steve 2:35 "You too should be vegetarian". Chris Squire the Legend. His memory is with all of us.

I'm not going to watch DVD (probably, at least not going to buy it). But I'm curious why the finger. It's kind of weird when performers show such distain and lack of self-control.

And Jon kicked Steve out of the band. They were going in a "new direction."
@mejsmith1 Жыл бұрын
When did this happen? In the 1970s, Jon Anderson left Yes, and Drama happened with Steve Howe. Since this period, every album after this had Howe playing on it till the most recent incarnation, where Howe is the only guy left standing, out of these people on stage. Jon Anderson was let go, Wakeman left and Alan and Chris died. Howe now runs Yes.
@nimrodery Жыл бұрын
@@mejsmith1 Jon was injured and had to take time off. He's been better for a while now but he was forced out of the band so they could continue touring. Because "Yes" can't afford to not tour.
@nimrodery Жыл бұрын
@@mejsmith1 But I guess you're right, they didn't exactly fire Steve, they just replaced most of his guitar tracks with someone who played better, on "Union." Then he left. I think I originally meant to write "then Steve kicked Jon out of the band." When accurately it would have been Chris, Alan and Steve. Based on what I've gathered I'm pretty sure Steve is the guy that put his foot down.

I know Steve got their first keyboard player kicked out. Then Squire recruited Wakeman and the rest is history

Somebody in the crowd says "Oh man" 😃 I've been to a couple of gigs he did for a Pam Bay of the Steve Howe Appreciation Society at the Fitzwilliam Centre in Beaconsfield, he seemed fairly chilled then but he can clearly be an arsehole at times! 😃

Howe is 5 foot 10. That's taller than me, for what it's worth. But he's very slim partly because he's been a vegetarian for nearly 50 years.
