"YES, BUT..." Socratic Dialogue Fix (CBT Clinical Tip)

Christine A. Padesky, PhD shows how changing therapist behavior can stop the “Yes, but…” client response. First, she invites therapists to observe that this client response usually follows two very specific therapist behaviors. As a solution, she proposes therapists use the four stages of Socratic Dialogue, especially stages #3, written summaries, and #4, analytical / synthesizing questions. Padesky illustrates these with a clinical vignette. Socratic dialogue helps clients come to their own meaningful conclusions so they can craft a personalized plan of change for themselves.
