Some classic rock bands (like Journey and Styx) have replaced their original vocalist with a sound-alike. Jon Anderson is the vocalist who replaced the whole band, and he still sounds wonderful!
@classicarcadeamusementpark4242
@classicarcadeamusementpark4242 Жыл бұрын
And with none of those 3 bands do the replacement singers sound just like the originals. It should never have happened. Add Foreigner to that list too. The craziest one of all was Little River Band. A former "replacement" member hired a lawyer who found a loop hole into giving him sole ownership of the band's name without the consent of the original members. Then this guy sub-leases the name to another replacement member. When they interviewed the guy who presently owns the name if he would ever consider allowing the original members to use their name again, his reply in an interview was "Not in this lifetime". Things have just gotten insanely crazy with how some of these bands continue without the most important people in the bands.
@ATalkingBadger
@ATalkingBadger Жыл бұрын
@@classicarcadeamusementpark4242 you need to do some research on Little River Band and find out what went on, cause you're in the right direction, but also far off on what happened.

Styx didn't replace Dennis Deyoung with a sound-alike, they weren't trying for that. They also still have their other 2 vocalists and sound better overall as a band than they did with Dennis Deyoung in the band.
@Paul71H
@Paul71H Жыл бұрын
@@ATalkingBadger Fair enough, but when I saw Styx in concert some years ago, I was struck by how the vocalist sounded like Dennis DeYoung and yet didn't look like him (because it wasn't him). I agree that Tommy Shaw and JY are a big part of their vocal sound as well.
@ValThor-g2c
@ValThor-g2c Жыл бұрын
@@Paul71H I saw them too. They played very well. Dennis was. missed but they played well. On the bill was Yes who phoned it in with that silly Canadian boy singing. It looked like Alan White was tapping his drums and wanted to go to sleep. Sad.

How is Jon still singing at that register? Age has left his vocal chords untouched. What a gift!
@smbarbour

Besides continuous practice, the main reason he can still sing at that register and why it is so hard to replicate his sound is that it isn't his falsetto. That's his natural voice, so there's no strain.

To be fair, Yes is now a shell of what it once was. I respect the contributions that Steve has made but to not let Jon back in the band is a mistake and a shame. Went to see Jon and Band Geeks tonight at the Palladium in NYC, it was worth the wait, The band was tight and their sound was excellent. Jon was wonderful as usual, sometimes forgetting a line or two, but he pushed through like the pro he is. With Jane in the front row as his support, he knew he was in good hands. We sat in the 5th row great seats, ran into people from years ago from Yes concerts 30 years ago.. it was a fun night. I would definitely watch this band again with Jon, everyone knew their part, the bass player was an animal…. So congrats to the Band Geeks, and thank you Jon for the many, many years…and of course….thank you Jane for keeping that light shining brightly for Jon…🌅

It was incredible to witness Jon's facial expressions during some of the solos and jams. Like he was blown away! Apparently this was hastily put together. Hence the scattered minimal tour dates. Was amazed at how good a basement-buddy-band was at doing this incredibly complicated music. I've been in Prog cover bands - Floyd, Yes, Genesis, ELP, etc. - what an absolutely huge thing to be asked by one of the founders of Prog to be their backup band. Awesome kudos to Richie Castellano and the Band Geeks. VERY ambitious playing a piece from Tales from Topographic Oceans. Wouldn't it be a hoot to do new "Yes" music with Jon? @@leovanlierop4580 A good friend played with Stanley Clark on his live studio album and he told me that yeah he could play alot of what Stanley could play but in no way did he have the ability to conceive and write the music. Sure others can sound like Squire but nobody can write and arrange music like he could. He was THE prog bassist and always will be. And I'm sure singers are the same way too.

Both sides would be! Make no mistake. The classic lineup was greater than the sum of its parts. But JA and Howe are just fundamentally different in how they work. That’s why they aren’t together! If JA called Howe or vice versa and said “I’ll do it your way” there would be a considerable drop in the quality of the band. Sometimes you can’t compromise.
