I think Davison is a good singer, but he has a softer tone and lighter delivery than Benoit or Jon A. Benoit could belt it out with power when needed. His voice had a more piercing (in a good way) high end that could cut through all the layered sounds of the band. But then Benoit started to struggle with pitch the longer he stayed on the road and was visibly feeling ill on most of the Yes/Styx double-bill dates. Davison's strength is that his pitch is damn near perfect every night on every song, but then he's not pushing his voice and volume to the heights that Benoit did. JD's softer singing approach helps him keep better control and not burn himself out with power belting. I had some vocal experience in my younger days, though it was in church music not rock & roll, but I do tend to notice the little vocal details because of that. Benoit and Jon D are both good singers with different strengths.

Benoit over Jon Davison any day. Davison's voice is always pretty and has no bite - Anderson could wail. And Alan White should have retired 20 years ago. Anderson developed some health problems (chronic bronchitis, I think?) that left him unable to sing up to par. Perhaps because of plans to tour already being made (which, for these guys, starts with simply clearing big blocks of time of future work), the rest of the band decided to carry on without him so they picked up a Yes tribute band singer whose day job was boat repair.
