As a teen, I liked Yes. In my twenties I liked them a lot. From thirty to fifty, I was too busy to explore. Since fifty, they've moved on up my chart (Mount Rockmore status), and I feel privileged to explore their marvelous catalogue!

Your journey with Yes is similar to mine. I was late to the party so to speak. I didn't appreciate them fully enough in my teens and through my fifties. It is a sad regret. Yes has since become my favorite band of all time. I just spent literally the past 5 years listening solely to Yes, anything and everything available. It was an amazing journey. It's not quite over, but it is time to move on. I actually get a bit teary eyed now listening to songs like this. It is amazing how they can take a concept like being at an airfield and making it beautiful and compelling. My sadness now reflects the departure of Jon Anderson, and now the passing of Chris Squire and Alan White. I believe they had so much more music to share together. It reflects my own life journey, in that at age 65 I now feel the urgency to accomplish all that I am supposed to do and gifted for. You don't think like that even at age 50.

I first saw Yes in Byron Bay 2012 and i was blown away by their instrumental skills and song structure (unfortunately Benoit David was already gone by then). I had to seek their albums out. The first one i bought and listened to was Close To The Edge. Maybe i should've started off less intense but that album is my favourite and probably always will be.

When it reaches that first chorus "And we can fly from here..." with Squire's descending bass lines undergirding, this piece takes off (pun intended!) and glistens every bit as bright as any Yes classic. And then to perfect the moment, Chris adds harmonies on the repeated phrase "We can fly", each one rising a step toward a wonderful resolution...nothing short of exquisite! Yes still had it - even in 2011 and without Jon Anderson!

I’m a huge fan of Trever Horn and the Drama album, but I think this is much better than the newer version with Horn. Benoit is simply a better vocalist. His voice sits just right in the mix and perfectly cuts through the instruments. He also has some warmth and emotion in his voice which is different from Horns more angular approach. With that said, this album with either vocalist is the best Yes music since the early 1980’s. With low expectations I was shocked at how good this album was on first listen, and it’s held up brilliantly.

Speaking of Yes since the 80's, Talk is terribly underrated. I especially like "Where Will You Be" and "Endless Dream". I personally think it's Rabin's finest hour with Yes, and feel it fits in well with the group's magical 70's tradition, albeit with a nicely updated touch. Wish they had continued in this particular vein but I suppose that's the turbulent nature of the band.

@jmdavison62 23 күн бұрын
@@PeterBrown-mz4nv There's sentimental value in letting Horn do his own vocals and add some Art of Noise flourishes, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the end product is better. There's a strong case to be made that the original is superior to _Fly from Here: Return Trip_ . Still, there's a hollow, unfinished quality to some of this material. Some of Steve Howe's guitar licks sound a little too sloppy. "Bumpy Ride" sounds like a demo, and the transition at the end of "Bumpy Ride" is jarring and forced, as if they had to meet a deadline and to stitch together what they had.

I f I had to point to one experience that forever changed the entire direction, philosophy, hope, and love of my life it would be seeing The Tales of Topographical Oceans tour concert in Pittsburgh,Pa. I was lost, without anything in my life to define who I was, nothing to give my heart a need to love that life. My soul was freed from the darkness and cold that imprisoned it. I could see,hear,feel,touching the gentle awakening...I laughed, I cried soul wrenching sobs of joy! It couldn't end! It would never end. Afterwards I walked out into the night and just marveled at it all. My friend caught me up, looked in my eyes and smiled, welcoming me to this new world. We embraced,and laughed. I'll never be the same... I had been playing bass for a year or so,needless to say I had found a mentor,hero,and friend all in the personage of Chris Squire. My bandmates at the time must have thought I'd surely gone a bit mad...It struck me odd how some of my fellow musicians just didn't get what YES was about. They'd say it was alright,"But ya can't dance to it..." I would try now and then to work a Yes lick into the repertoire, it worked... sometimes. The greatest thing though was when the walls of my world came crashing down and all seemed lost, Yes somehow always had just released a new album,which I would buy, lock myself away and learn every note. Yes has the most efficacious curative powers for the heart and soul. God bless you, Chris, I shall always love,admire,and miss you terribly. I want to thank the Yes fans for letting me share my feelings. God bless us all!

Superior version of Fly From Here, the one I love from the original album release in 2011. Absolutely perfect! The "Return Trip" version is, quite frankly, inferior. I know Trevor Horn wrote a ton of the song, but he doesn't accurately convey the emotional dynamics of the lyrics despite that. Benoit's emotive and dynamic expression is lofty, soulful, and so beautiful.

@@ricardooliva4034 @Ricardo Oliva I can PLAY most of Yes's classic era stuff on both guitar and bass... My favorite song from Tales is "The Remembering", Yessongs is my favorite live album of all time and I've listened to it at least 100 times in its entirety... But none of that changes the fact that "Fly From Here" (the 6 minute title track of this extended track) is a masterpiece that I find even more musical than even "Close to the Edge", Gates, or "Heart of the Sunrise". Those songs are all much more technical than "Fly from Here" but in my opinion this is even more musical and shows the greater maturity of the band 40 years later even if Chris Squire was the only classic Yes member to get a writing credit... Not one bar too many... It's a perfect 6 minute song... And everyone from Steve Howe to Alan White is just perfect on this track. Easily my favorite Yes track.

@@srb99100 It was Horn wanted to do. He wanted his vocals on another Yes album. He and Geoff Downs wrote the song. Don’t hate him for it. Both versions are beautifully done and Benoit and Trevor added their own personality to the song.

For starters, this tune was written by Horn and Downes, and originally by them recorded as well. Everything else done afterwards is a version of the original tune. Horses for courses, but it is known that Horn was requested to lay the vocals for the 2008/2011 versions, and those takes served as a guide for Benoit, who recorded his on top of Horn's. If you want to find the album version, not the outtakes, look no further than in Yes's official page.

Return Trip was a total slap in the face to Benoit David in my view. It’s really sad what’s happened to Yes, especially after Chris Squire passed. In my opinion, Yes should’ve ended with this album, they would’ve gone out on top.

I honestly think they could've ended with magnification. This song had been floating out in the æther for over 30 years, and I'm glad it was finally released. It is a masterpiece. But to be fair, it's technically more of a Buggles song than a Yes song. Sure, Yes played it a few times in the early 80s, but the Buggles played it a few times more in the late 70s. Side note: I do think this album is better than Magnification, I just believe Magnification is more of a Yes album than Fly From Here. One thing we can all agree on is Heaven & Earth was hot garbage.

@@real.sugarcone: It's not just that it takes an investment in some listening time. Heaven & Earth actually is, admittedly, a bit below the usually high musical and melodic standards of YES. I think I read somewhere that Steve Howe is reputed to be a bit unhappy with it.

Unfortunately, Yes has a long history of treating ex-members like trash, going back to Peter Banks and Tony Kaye. They did the same with Patrick Moraz and Benoit David. But the one that totally takes the cake is Jon Anderson. Turfed from the band he helped co-found. I lost all respect for the remaining members of Yes after they did that.
