Yet another winner. There’s an amazing black-and-white very early live performance by this lineup, packed with jamming and improv. Worth finding on KZbin. The raw energy ❤ Thanks for bringing this album to more ears. These first 2 albums if you do Time and a Word 😊

I was introduced to Yes by a friend who had 2 older brothers. It was probably Fragile too. He also introduced me to Zappa, Rundgren, ELP, Moody Blues, Chicago among others. Of course, when I reconnected with him 15 years ago I thanked him.

Really liking this current reaction project if only for the historical perspective on Yes. During my prog years (mid- to late 70s when I was in high-school) I was a fan, but I've never heard anything from their 1st 2 albums. I was especially curious about their early years after reading Phil Collins's autobiography. He felt that they were at their best during this time (implying he didn't really care for their stuff as the 70s progressed). It's certainly different from what they evolved into as a group, but the elements are there even at this early point.

Why in the hell do I have this huge pile of Yes group and solo albums and I didn't get this one back in the day? So far really good 👍

Kitty Ho: "More Yes, dad!" 😹 After hearing how Peter Banks mixed jazz and rock on these first two Yes albums (especially this one) the choice of Steve Howe to replace him makes a lot more sense. Steve had all that as well, plus amazing acoustic chops. And he was a songwriter. So it sort of sucked for Peter, who was as good or better than a lot of guitar players at the time. It's just that Jon and Chris had crazy high expectations and were prone to always be thinking "But if we had THAT guy...". Peter was a good player, and entertaining on stage. Sadly he made some bad career choices and went into a long decline through the 70's until he basically disappeared off everybody's radar. Then he re-appeared in the early 90's during the prog resurgence and actually started recording again. Sadly health issues took him from us in 2013. RIP. Re: Bill not swinging, yeah -- Bill *really* wanted to be a jazz drummer but got pulled into the rock world at too young an age, before he really developed his jazz chops. So even though his brain was wired for jazz, as a player he never never quite delivered. Even right before he retired, when he could basically do whatever he wanted with his group Earthworks, there was always that unique Brufordian snare *thonk!* BTW, Bill's story is that Chris gobbled up so much of the percussive frequency space that Bill *had* to tune his snare crazy high just to cut through. Chris has never confirmed this. 😉

Great cover, very strong musicianship. The production of the album sounds kind of cheap, but over the years that has become part of its charm. And, your cat obviously likes Yes - second kitty spotting in a row!

Maybe they didn't use the take he wanted for the final mix. I have experienced that myself, it can be really annoying when you do a take that is obviously NOT a keeper, and so you lay down tbe good take, and then you find out when you hear the final mix! Damn ! Why did the dude use the bad take?? The fact is, back then it was very easy for the engineer to lose track of which takes were the 'good' ones because the mix- down was all done manually in real time with hands on sliders and knobs. The engineer has to 'perform' it right, so HE has to do multiple 'takes' of pulling off a perfectly choreographed octopus dance of arms and hands on a 16 track or 24 track recording console. When HE gets his dance right, don't dare tell him he used the wrong guitar take!! Lol.

This reminded _me_ of The Doors, too! 😀 And also of the stuff Brian Wilson was working on, at that time 🙂 I love the strong 60's vibe a lot! 😍 1969 is also my birth year! 😁 And this was the first time I heard that song 😊

Some may not like this but you were reading about Banks. In an interview once Chris said they were glad to get rid of him. He was lazy and trouble. Not an exact quote. He had his points, but Chris wasn’t one to mince words or lie. I trust Chris’s take on the situation.

One of the Yes songs for which the term “cover version” doesn’t quite fit. "Song based on..." would probably be better. But I like what Yes did with the song "America" by Simon and Garfunkel much better.

I could do without the middle drum/guitar section but I really like the rest. Definitely liking this album. I don't think I ever listened to it in full while actually paying attention to it. I was a late Yes follower and would probably be called a fake Yes fan. I actually love the album Union which I guess is considered taboo. Hahahahaha

@@Owlstretchingtime78 Oh, is that why you don't like the music on the album? Did Wakeman's crying cause you to not enjoy the 14 songs on it? Songs that are of a wide variety of styles and energy levels? I feel sorry for you that you can't enjoy it.

I like the Byrds version so much better. The Byrds were a good band in their time. This is just off course compared to the original, but it's Yes's version so, they made it their style.
