He was a really great keyboard player also. Saw him on 90125 and Big Generator tours. It isn't a competition but Wakeman is the bigger showman and embraced synthesizers and Mellotrons allowing Yes' sound to evolve in a different direction. My first big rock concert was Yes' "Relayer" tour and Patrick Moraz brought an amazing jazz fusion sound to Yes! No slacker keyboard players in Yes.

The instrument at the start was a vihuela guitar, according to the album notes. It's a 15th-century fretted plucked Spanish string instrument, shaped like a guitar but tuned like a lute. I think it's the same one Steve used in the 'Wonderous Stories' video.

According to the liner notes of the original album on Atlantic Records, laying in my lap while I type this, it is listed as a ''Vachalia' on Your Move, but Wikipedia states it is a Portuguese guitar or Portuguese guitarra (Portuguese: guitarra portuguesa, pronounced [ɡiˈtaʁɐ puɾtuˈɣezɐ]). @debrabrabenec3731 states that it is a VIhuela, not mandolin. @psbarrow says it is a Spanish Laúd, given to him by his sister not a Portuguese 12-string. @debrabrabenec3731 says its a Spanish Laúd. @tommack9395 says it Is not a mandolin - It's a Portuguese guitar - which is a 12-string acoustic, odd shape body and short neck). @Yes_Jorge_Yes says the guitar is a Portuguese guitar @mikeeckel2807 says it is a Portuguese "mandolin." It's called a "valhueva", or something like that @jpirard says it is a Portuguese 12 string, @crimsonking70 says it is a Laud, which is a Spanish lute @Tarkus7 says it is a Portuguese guitar. @cletusbeauregard1972 says the "guitar" is a Vihuela, which comes in a few variations. @sigil5772 says it is a Portuguese 12-string, tuned E-B-E-B-E-G# @brianfileman says that it is a Portuguese guitarra. @garyanning9731 says the instrument at the start was a vihuela guitar,. @orogenicman says it is a Laud. @mikesteptoe9204 says he just saw Steve at a Farm Market Store. Maybe @mikesteptoe9204 should ask Steve directly what the heck this actually was if he sees him in that store again. 🤣🤣🤣🤣😜😜😜😜😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I saw Yes 3 times before they had a recording contract, whilst I was still at school, then in 1970 topping the bill with David Bowie as support, before moving to London where I very quickly got married. My wife had never heard of Yes, but I bought The Yes Album anyway as the word on it was that it was easily their best. Amazingly she absolutely loved it and it became our go to album in 1971 when we moved into a rubbish and cold flat in London where we used music to warm us up. So it's really great to see you two also loving this album as a couple. And of course I always love your reactions to music! Thanks ;)

Yes, because Tony Kaye did not play the Mellotron. He didn't believe in synths or other modern keyboards and mainly just stuck to the Piano and Hammond Organ, which in the end was his ultimate undoing in Yes. They asked him several times to learn to play the Moog and Mellotron but he refused. But it paved the way for keyboard wizard, Rick Wakeman.

Hi Guys ! This album was my 1st ever introduction to "Yes" I went to a mates house in the 70's and he put this on. I was 16yrs old and not long moved from living in Ireland to England by just a few months and was at a new school. 16 was the leaving age, but I had to go back a year, as I missed the exams in Ireland. My classmates were 15. I had never been to a mixed boys & girls school. In Ireland it's a total separation, so it was an all male school. It was a culture shock for me. Girls in my class ? !!! and in French class .. I was the only male. Lol At the time I was into T.Rex and my entire album collection, was "The Moody Blues > For your children's children's children " [ Best album they ever did ] I had "Roxy Music > For Your Pleasure" "Deep Purple > Fireball" "The Partridge Family > Up to date" [ a gift ] "The Beatles > Let it be" [ my sister had all the others ] & "T.Rex Electric Warrior" which still today is amazing. So that was my entire collection. Then along came Pink Floyd's Meddle [ again heard at a mates house ] and then "Yes . The Yes Album" Boy did I get into Prog in a big way. This album is still my favourite. Ooo Chris Squires bass !!! ... In another 6 -7 years I was to discover "Rush" ! Nuff said ! 😂 Byeee Jim X

“The Yes Album” was the first with Steve Howe, who replaced Peter Banks. Steve brought a lot with his unique guitar playing and songwriting, as well as his singing. I first heard “Fragile” then “Close to the Edge” before hearing “The Yes Album”. At that point I was vaguely aware of only one song from that recording- “Starship Trooper”. Like the two before that, I listened obsessively until I could anticipate every note and nuance. Rick Wakemen talked about seeing them at this time. He noted that nothing about them was normal. A small statured alto voice in the lead, an even higher voice (Squire) on top of that. A guitarist with a jazz guitar and Fender Twin when everyone had stacks of Marshalls, a jazz style drummer with a mismatched kit, and a bassist with Rickenbacher played with a pick running treble sounds through a Sunn amplifier. The lyrics didn’t make literal sense, and yet they seemed to convey a clear idea. Nothing they did was quite like anything anyone had done before. Even when they played covers, they gave it what Bill Bruford called “the Yes treatment”- adding long and adventurous musical interludes with challenging chord changes and time signatures. And they made it all flow with grace and beauty!

In the studio recording on The Yes Album, the song opens with Jon Anderson, Chris Squire AND Steve Howe singing the sentence "I've seen all good people turn their heads each day so satisfied I'm on my way" twice a cappella, in three-part harmony. You seem to leave out Steve a lot as part of the harmonizing with Jon and Chris. Albeit, it's usually Jon with Chris more than Jon with Chris and Steve, but not always just Jon with Chris.

"Send an Instant Karma to me, initial it with loving care." Love this callback to the Beatles song that was released just a year earlier, in 1970. Fun trivia note: English drummer Alan White who played as a guest artist on "Instant Karma" replaced Bill Bruford as Yes's drummer in 1972. He was the longest-serving member of Yes and the only member besides original bassist Chris Squire never to leave.

Don't leave out Steve Howe's contribution to the vocal harmonies. His voice by itself isn't great, but with Chris and Jon it adds to that classic YES sound. Also, I'm sure someone has pointed it out already, but the stringed instrument that Steve is playing at the beginning is a Portuguese Guitar - you can see him playing it in the film footage from Yessongs. (Have you seen the concert film? Not great sound and some of the camera work is a bit off, but it is a fantastic document of the time - and seeing them in their prime is simply amazing!)

The boys in the band of course idolized the Beatles, and took a lot of musical ideas from them. What stand out to me is the fact that they sound so "American" in the way they play, even though they were Brits through and through. You have to remember these guys were inventing a new style of music combining classical harmonies and structures, with choir music and motown funk, and good ole rock'nroll.
