In Brazil, we have a saying "nem a pau, Juvenal!" (= No way, Jose!) but foreigners often find it confusing, I think

​​@@Gavkittenну, если разобрать слова подробно, то ничего странного в этой фразе нет. "Да" здесь просто частица, эмоционально усиливающая сказанное. "Да что ж такое?" "Да почему же?" "Да ладно...". Остальное переводится как переводится. В целом, это можно перевести как "Well, probably no".

Hi Ronnie, I'm from Brazil and here we also have something similar, where we use a negative and a positive and vice versa. Pretty similar on the raw translation actually hahaha I love your content, been following you for some time, first time commenting tho Thought you may find interesting that this is not exclusive of US/Canada/English Speakers

We also say "да нет" in Russian where да - yes and нет - no, but in case да нет, да is more like "well", it doesn't really mean anything.

Japanese people often says "Un" to those questions and I get like " what?", "which one?" "yes?" "No?" very confusing. anyway, thanks again for the best lesson, Ronnie!

It wasn't during the pandemic I think it was before then. I remember hearing it on Gray's Anatomy and I think it was Callie, And I'm not sure how many years ago that was. "No, yeah" - And she wasn't guessing, she wasn't stalling. Some sort of weird figure of speech that developed and I don't know when. I was kind of hoping that you did. Oh well. I'm not confused by it. I just find it annoying. By the way I'm not learning English. I'm learning Polish. Although at this precise moment I'm wasting time. Because Polish is hard. I know how to say Polish is hard, I don't understand Polish, I don't speak Polish, I don't understand, please speak slowly and many other helpful Polish phrases along with where is the bathroom? Which I think is the most important thing you should learn first in any language. I guess I should get to it
