Dan can you do a video on "off the grid tricks" that you reference. The reason I ask is it seems like this is the "Core" skaters trying to gate keep what can be "proper." It's a lame example - but let's say someone does a kickflip down 10. Someone else wants to do a 360 flip, why? Because it's a harder trick. Then maybe someone wants to do a hardflip. That's harder. At some point to get harder - it gets well, crazy... but they are still harder. Why is there a line where instead of just referencing a trick as harder it gets called "circus?" Seems lame from my laymen opinion... skaters are insecure about it?
@adamhamre2045 Жыл бұрын
this 100%, Its so annoying seeing people just complain about the evolution of skateboarding. Like if you're watching a flat ground skate video, to complain about out of the ordinary flat ground tricks..... then what are you watching it for in the first place. It's not like it's more exciting to see someone miss a backside flip or something easy one time out of fifty attempts.
@ssjneko1 Жыл бұрын
I couldn’t disagree more about defense tricks having to be done clean. Even before the Berrics was a thing, it was always known that defense would allow toe drags or worse. The sketchy defense landings for people that rarely try those tricks is what makes the games fun to watch. Think of Nyjah landing the nollie lateflip this past season. You would want him to redo that? No, it’s a trick that he can barely do and landing sketchy on defense is perfectly fine, hilarious, and gnarly all in one.
@DanCorrigan Жыл бұрын
It definitely makes for way more exciting matches but my argument is when there is leeway for one person, but that leeway can be adjusted for someone else. Things can get unfair, so drawling a hard line in the sand is actually an equalizer. The excitement of someone landing a trick for the first time all crazy is awesome and a highlight to watch forsure. I’m only speaking on fairness.
@ssjneko1 Жыл бұрын
@@DanCorrigan ultimately it's up to the referee. Maybe having just one ref would take care of this or a set of Berrics officials that are better trained. I think this is why Berra reffed all games in the finals, so there could be no questioning it. I think that kind of kills the friends having fun vibe though which you did a good job talking about. Honestly, I can't really think of anything egregious that the refs did or screwed up this past season that really gave an advantage to one person over another. The only calls I can think about is Andy not being allowed to do any Malto manual shit and Joslin vs. Peterson where I agreed with the refs call on the trick being allowed on defense. Either way, I thought "fairness" was never in question and what was in question was some refs leniency vs. others.

I think the Berrics should just do the battle anyway they want. Then skaters can decide if they want to be part of that or not. Obviously the best skaters aren’t likely going to win. They don’t spend all that time practicing flat ground tricks. Jamie is the best out of those skaters at that specific type of skating and that’s why he dominates. He can do all the classic tricks too and is crazy consistent. Seems alot of the big name skaters don’t really care. Like it didn’t bother Cole that he didn’t win, but it probably bothered Petterson. Maybe let the skaters actually use the flag and review the trick if they want it to be a serious competition. But I think the Berrics just want views.

The reality here is that skateboarding is progressing at an alarming rate and Jamie IS spearheading that progress. He has developed an unprecedent level of control and with the rules simply being "I do a trick, now you do it"; it just goes to show that there might need to be a new set of rules - like a BATB+ in which it is turn-by-turn in rotation. Dan does a trick, I land it. Now it's my turn to do a trick, Dan lands it, and so on. I would like to see how that play out rather than one skater getting the opportunity to clean house on a roshambo. I don't like the idea Jamie is getting some harsh critique lately for being an artist with gravity. But in the same breath I see how he might actually be the very one who might break BATB. It's not like Berra and Koston can just keep adding rules like "no Jamie Griffin Circus Shit" because, well it isn't "circus shit", and I will reject that statement every time, it's talent. Pure hard work and effort put into skateboarding. If Berra and Koston need to look at how they want to make this contest fair and not simply by adding a bunch of 'rules' that don't really define anything other than putting up barriers to stop one person from simply winning non stop. That's my two pennies.

Can we get away from categorizing late flips, cancel stuff, pressure flips, double/ triple variations etc as "garbage" or "circus" tricks. Like if we are just doing straight eight of kickflip, heelflip, tre flip, backside flip etc... those games are so much more boring to watch, and it's not really pushing the envelope of what flat ground can be. I know I don't speak for everyone, but I don't think we want to see a bracket of 32 people doing the exact same 20-30 tricks just because someone misses a frontside/backside variation of the basic tricks we always see, even in person at our local skateparks. The whole reason I personally enjoy watching games of skate is to see on the spot how crazy these flat ground tricks can get, it shows who puts the work in, and who doesn't.

I think the main thing that would make it more "fair" would be to run it like a normal contest: the whole thing has to happen over a single weekend, all the contestants are present at the same time, brackets are ACTUALLY set ahead of time, they have a team of three refs positioned at different angles, and the same three refs work every battle. IMO, all the rule tweaks in the world won't help if the basic organization of the contest is a clusterf***. But I also think that all of that is treating BATB like a serious contest when it isn't. It's an ad-revenue machine for The Berrics.

I think they definitely need a rule for properness of 360 tricks. 180 Pivot 180 around definitely shouldn't count. No toe drags would make defense harder, but I think it would overall be a better game to just eliminate them. To eliminate ad for whoever starts first, just put in a rule where each person has to get a lead at some point in the match. So basically if you hit SKAT and never had a lead, the places switch. Something like that. IDK. I still find them enjoyable, watched every one, but they definitely could be better and i agree with your take 100%.

As an “outsider” i.e. someone newer to skating who may be more flexible in his opinions, I think Dan’s opinions re: “circus tricks” are somewhat faded. Respectfully!! If I’m watching a competition to judge a master of flatground skating, I want to see the natural progression of the sport and the art form. I want to see gnarly cancel flips and late flips and weird, new variations to things we’ve never seen. Are the entry tricks good for setting a mood? Sure. But I don’t need to watch 20 Berrics matches with every kickflip then heelflip variation in each. The points re: judging are spot on though!! They try to ride the line of casual/goofy competition (all the Powell team being involved, Val reading the rules, random judges from whoever showed up), but it is starting to interfere with the actual competition. They need hard standards for landing cleanly (especially because I’m down with the weirder stuff) and using challenges or replay.

As others have mentioned, leeway for defense is a game design decision, defense needs to be stronger so that winning RPS isn't as big of an advantage. However, I do agree with you, especially about Tyler's toe drag. There's no rule that explicitly says you are allowed to toe drag on defense, his toe drag in that case was huge and egregious, even under the "leniency to defense" rule that could have been a redo, but the rule is (intentionally?) vague, so either way could be justified. Even with leniency to defense going first still has an advantage, but there are other solutions to this problem. In Chess, the white pieces have an advantage because they go first, so they play multiple games where each side gets to start as white an equal number of times. The same could be done here, play 2 games, one side starting on offense each time. That would make matches go on longer, but combine that with a higher quality standard for defense and it might even out a bit.

I agree with you to an extent, the part I disagree with is the defense argument, I don’t think they should be able to drag there feet across the ground like we seen this season, but a slight tick tack or little power turn is okay on defense I think, now I’m not saying 180 to power slide 180 is okay for 360s, they should at least rotate 270, in that range, with the technology we have we should be able to replay tricks, even on offense to see if no feet touched, and there wasn’t to much slide, but saying the have to land perfectly is a little much, obviously on offense it should be clean, but at the end of the day we all can say what we want, but I’m most certain nothing is going to change, I did see some good changes in the finals which I liked, and honestly like Berra as a judge, that’s a good point about the judging, the switch back heel call shouldn’t have been made, Joslin could’ve maybe won that game if it wasn’t for that call, as far as the skaters strategy I think a lot of them realize these days giving up offense could cost you, so unfortunately you’re gonna see people going for the throat, which I’m not mad at, it makes for an exciting game, I do love a back and forth long game of skate, but as we goon the games will most likely shorten because the flat ground level is so high, some of these dudes are so hard to beat and they know that so can’t blame them for doing that they do

Points: No. When you don't show up for your match you forfeit your match. Every single sport in the world in a KO bracket works like this. If a team refuses to go onto the field they forfeit. The Legion of Doom just makes this a little more fun, we all know it's fake and they aren't going to let 20 dudes advance. Your solution is actually so bizarre and confusing. Agree on the sketch, the rules are there, and there's no point in reading them unless they are enforced. We can't expect the people toe-dragging to call themselves into account either, that's why there is supposed to be a ref. Battle at the Berrics should be in the Berrics, that's the name of. That's the entire thing. You counter your point moments later saying Jamie is good enough to figure out any ground... He doesn't skate at the Berrics ever, yet wins. Kinda seems the entire thing rests on proper refs and enforcing their own rules. Reasonable fix

The one thing that makes watching BatB difficult for me is how shamelessly they flaunt their wealth and prestige, then they act like they're all humble and fun and shit. They do not HAVE to shove famous people in front of the camera (seating Kareem on the concrete floor front and center the whole time, that Pharrell ad, etc.) just to show off their connections, they don't HAVE to get diamond Prada rings as prizes, they do that shit intentionally. I don't know what the deal is with that but it just feels like they're shamelessly showing off. It's like they want US to think BatB is the Super Bowl, and they're going to structure it like the Super Bowl and run ads and montages and do the cringe Kiss-Cam thing, and then... THEY don't treat it like the Super Bowl, they treat it like we're all just chillin at the skate park... It's a fucking weird vibe.

"Circus tricks" says a post street Mullen skater... 😂 Let's have a pre-1990 BATB where Ray Barbee destroys everyone...

Love Ray Barbee skateboarding. In BATB I can see people training no complyfs revert 540varial underflip😂. I call batb the flip battle.

@@azazelreficulmefistofelicu7158 I'm one of those weirdos that wonders what street skating would be if Rocco and Mullen hadn't taken over. Unlike most 80's skaters I always liked freestyle skateboarding but freestyle across a manual pad is still freestyle it is not street... maybe they should call it "Plaza" skating... 😜

Agreed 100% with this video and its annoying when they clearly pick their favorites to win it all. Same with the bs calls and etc.

You’re right man. BATB would be so much better if they were doing easier tricks by people less talented at flat 💯.

think you should have to drop in and then pop before a line, to regulate speed..

The dudes doing gross circus tricks have really turned me off from BATB over the past couple seasons, but I see a lot of people love watching floppy triple flips, 540 shove-its, etc. 🤷♂ Also 100% agree that finals should be on blacktop
