I live in Dallas Texas. I simply love you two. I wish you were my neighbors. I first saw Yes in mid 70s. Seeing Jon sing this, and the band being so incredible, I felt like I was in Heaven already. Surrounded by long haired hippie people, lol, still my kind of people, at a rock concert. That night changed my entire life. Yes does that for, and to me. I’ve hung out with the band several times, and literally am speechless around Jon, and he knows it. He followed me around like a puppy dog. I finally got the courage to say something. I said, like an idiot, “You are my biggest fan”. He giggled and said “yes Nancy, I am”. I wanted to slither up and die. Instead he gave me a kiss. ☮️❤️🎼😎

And amazingly, the album was 90% recorded in Chris Squire's basement! (something that was not said at all in the original album liner notes). The band and Eddie Offord deserve massive kudos for what must have been a very difficult track to produce, mix and balance...it really is a unique recording.

Jon was at his best writing this type of angelic music. I bought this album when it was released and loved it. I didn't know anything about the War and Peace connection, and it doesn't matter now. I don't search for meanings in songs, they don't need meanings to be pleasing. Thanks for the video! ☮🤎🎶

Thanks for your reactions. I enjoy your videos. Along the same lines to some of the softer Yes songs you have been listening to, I would recommend the symphonic live version of "In the Presence of" and also "Wonderous Stories" (official Yes version). Going back to the earlier Yes I would recommend "Yours is no Disgrace", "I've Seen all Good People", "Perpetual Change". There are many more great songs to choose from. Enjoy your journey.

Re Gates of Delirium. Be aware... when a band like Yes want to show the pain, stupidity and cruelty of war in a song - they do. It is painful, gripping, upsetting
@Yes_Jorge_Yes13 күн бұрын
@@xlerb_again_to_music7908 Yes they make it scary like war. in order to record it they went to a Junk Yard and picked up car parts they could bang so it would sound like Swords clashing, you can hear the pain in the guitar riffs and keyboard battles. It is scary, but so they made peace sounds as beautiful as it is.

Some day you might be able to handle the extraordinary first 16 minutes of *The Gates Of Delirium,* the 23 minute long masterpiece YES created which captures the *_moods & emotions_* of a country that goes to war against some "enemy" nation. "Soon" was the epilogue part of the epic which comes after the horrors of the war have finally come to an end & everyone's wondering why that journey through hell happened at all. They actually attempt to provide music to "the story of a war" The reason why I say "handle it" is because the pre-war section & the war section contain a lot of _complexity_ of arrangement & musicianship that you really can't analyze while you're listening to it for the first time because you can't keep up with all the changes. When you finally feel ready to take on the complexity of the entire The Gates Of Delirium epic, you really need to just (1) follow the bass line that drives it throughout and (2) Jon Anderson's vocals. If you do that, it will take you through all the moods that they are throwing at you & the crucial contributions of the lead guitarist & keyboard player are presented to you in their time. Steve Howe's guitar work in this one is amazing, which will really stand out to you upon a second listen Also, I know you've read lyrics before listening to a song in the past; that would be a good idea for this song, as well. The lyrics say _a lot_ & they are part of setting the mood of the music being played, so foreknowledge is a good thing... Also, you'll want to listen to the *_original_* studio version of the song before viewing a live recorded vid, which are always inferior to the original studio track. I say _original_ studio track because there are more than one "re-mastered" versions of Gates Of Delirium that are seriously inferior to the original studio recording. Just saying...

The entire Relayer album is AMAZING, and it was far ahead of its time in 1974. "Soon" is a beautiful piece in itself of course, but it reveals its full meaning only when it's heard as the end of a rumbling, dramatic, groundbreaking, epic vision of war and what it does to those who are passing in its way, who have to fight it.

Got the Symphonic Live DVD in 2002ish and have watched it over and over and never once put the animations on. If you watch the band and orchestra it's amazing. Gates of Delirium is probably my favourite yes tracks it was my introduction to the band. Soon without experiencing the delirium makes little sense. It's the peace after war. The battle sequence is full on and then it's calm after the storm which is a hurricane not a bit of rain and wind.

The final section of The Gates of Delirium, YES's devastating epic from 'Relayer'. Inspired by the novel 'War and Peace', we are taken on a journey into the catastrophic destruction of war, into the heart of battle, the victory and sorrow of its ending and finally the melancoly, joy and hope of this piece, the aftermath and forward looking spiritual hope of renewal... I wish I could fast-track this song into tbe hearts of those who are experiencing the despair and suffering in Gaza, the Sudan, in Somalia, in Lebanon, in the Ukraine, in Iran and every single world citizen that is now feeling crushed by the destructive madness of war. SOON..OH SOON THE LIGHT...

Great reaction -- so now you should do the whole studio version of The Gates Of Delirium. Tho I have to warn you -- it does get pretty chaotic half way thru (it's represents the madness of war). But as usual for Yes, it's another masterpiece.

IMO - always listen to the studio version of a song FIRST.
@raysmith211213 күн бұрын
As beautiful as this solo segment alone is, to get the full impact of it you really have to listen it in the context of the entire Gates of Delirium piece. Here, you’re effectively just listening to the ‘peace’ part of the overall song without first going through the mayhem and chaos of the ‘ war’. It’s the amazing contrast between the two elements that gives Soon the killer emotional impact when heard in context. Try the album version of GoD - it’s an incredible roller coaster, and Soon will break your heart at the end of it.

I'm an old timer with mixed emotions about a lot of the music YES produced. I love the "Yes album", "Fragile", "Close to the Edge" and "Going for the One", but in 1977 the Sex Pistols emerged and YES started to sound a bit pretentious and worn out. I think you had to live it to understand the seismic shift in the culture, like when the Beatles came out and changed not just the music but the whole of western culture - an organic change, irresistible and wonderful at the same time. But 'YES" will always be my favorite because of the spiritual wonder they evoke in me, something no other band does. Peace and love to you both.

It’s a shame that you didn’t get to see the actual live performance unless some copyright issues were in place. The whole point of a live performance is to see them perform not to show a bunch of random graphics that makes no sense in relationship to the song itself. Why someone would recommend this version is beyond me.

What a shame you're listening to the end of "The Gates of Delirium". You pretty much ruined the song now. It's like having someohne tell you the ending of a movie before you see it. You need to do the whole song. The beginning of the song is the preperation for war. The middle is the battle. This part is the ending which is the peace after the battle. Gates if one of their best songs. Right up there with "Close to the Edge" which is a must listen since it's the number one prog rock song.

A record label can chop up a song and release parts of it as a "single edit," but it doesn't change the fact that "Soon" is just a section of the first track on Fragile, The Gates of Delirium.
