As a New England native (who started following the MKS during a brief stint on LI), this just isn’t true. You can’t go anywhere in NE without seeing people, cars, etc. with Pats gear. I’m sure that’s because of the dynasty, but still, that’s been the case for ~20 years. In terms of popularity, I’d go 1. Sox/Pats (depending on the season), 2. Bruins 3. Celtics. But all four teams are wildly popular here.

Scott Murphy I agree. When Belichick retires in the next couple of years, unless they become the worst team in the league right away, the Pats fanbase in the Boston region mainly among millennial and now Generation Z demographic is now permanent. Going forward, all 4 Of the Major New England clubs will be in a battle for number 1. In any other city in the US or Canada, any of these fan bases would be number 1.

You're not wrong, as a kid growing up in Mass I idolized Nomar, Mo Vaughn, Cam Neely, Bourque, etc... but this is true all across America. The NFL was NOT the dominant juggernaut of sports it is today in the 90s. The NFL rose significantly in the mainstream sports landscape in the mid to late 90s, which also coincides with the Patriots becoming a respectable franchise. Seriously, go watch mid 90s Sportscenter in September and see how much baseball, basketball, and even hockey was talked about. On one episode I randomly clicked on a Tuesday in 1996 they talked about baseball for nearly the entire show combined with some NBA and NHL. The only news headline for the NFL was the Lions making a QB change, which was an under 2 minute piece. Today any move like that would take up half the DAY on ESPN and regardless of the time of the year the NFL is almost always a major story across sports media. The culture shifts, the reality is now there's 20-30 year olds in Mass/New England that grew up watching the Patriots as their #1 sports team that will continue to like football as their #1 sport.

Football is much bigger than years ago. I’m from Houston area. Love the pats ,but back in Oiler days the stadium would b empty. Now even the crap they put on field the stadium is packed. Football is to big now. Every town is a football town.

Nope. Boston is staunchly a baseball town. They always has been fairweather fans about the Pats. Watch how that fandom will scatter if Bellichick can’t replicate the magic or Bellichick leaves.
