And You And I
[I Cord Of Life]
A man conceived a moment's answer to the dream
Staying the flowers daily, sensing all the themes
As a foundation left to create the spiral aim
A movement regained and regarded both the same
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
Changed only for a sight of sound, the space agreed
Between the picture of time behind the face of need
Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid
Emotion revealed as the ocean maid
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
Coins and crosses
Never know their fruitless worth
Cords are broken
Locked inside the mother Earth
They won't hide and hold, they won't tell you
Watching the world, watching all of the world
Watching us go by
And you and I climb over the sea to the valley
And you and I reached out for reasons to call
[II Eclipse]
Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid
Emotions revealed as the ocean maid
As a movement regained and regarded both the same
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
[III The Preacher, The Teacher]
Sad preacher nailed upon the coloured door of time
Insane teacher be there reminded of the rhyme
There'll be no mutant enemy we shall certify
Political ends as sad remains will die
Reach out as forward tastes begin to enter you
I listened hard but could not see
Life tempo change out and inside me
The preacher trained in all to lose his name
The teacher travels, asking to be shown the same
In the end we'll agree, we'll accept, we'll immortalize
That the truth of man maturing in his eyes
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid
As a moment regained and regarded both the same
Emotion revealed as the ocean maid
A clearer future, morning, evening, nights with you
[IV Apocalypse]
And you and I climb, crossing the shapes of the morning
And you and I reach over the sun for the river
And you and I climb, clearer towards the movement
And you and I called over valleys of endless seas

I am still trying to find this version of a Yes song I heard on satellite radio awhile back. It was the best live song I have heard from them. I tried to look it up. It was off deep tracks station. The best bands do imo. The studio might be the best place as far as true creative freedom. But a "band" is really a function of certain styles of music imo. Even if you think about early recordings of rock classics, Presely, Fats Domino, etc and then later with Zeppelin, the Who, etc they recorded basically live as a band. Overdubbing was sparsely implemented for the most part. My point is "rock music" is one of those styles where the band and that live performance is central to the music. The energy of a live performance and the freedom it provides to stray from the studio version all create this extra layer of expression. Yes and Led Zeppelin are to me bands where the definitive live albums crush all of their other works imo.

In 1978 I was 11 & wanted to go to a concert with my older cousins so bad that when I heard them talking about going to see Yes in the round I begged them to let me come. My older cousin (defacto leader of the others) looked at me & said "if you can sing one Yes song you can come" I immediately sang You & I. So on Sunday of Labor Day weekend 1978 I sat in the New Haven Coliseum with my cousins & Yes! And on my 1st day of school the following week I wore my little to big on me Yes concert shirt. A beautiful three quarter sleeve baseball shirt. And Yes delivered everything I had hoped for & more that night!

I saw them in Maryland just a few days after that. It was a sold out concert. We went to the Capitol Center to see if there were any seats available. Two second row tickets had just been returned. It was an amazing concert. We could almost touch them, we were so close. Steve Howe had about 15 different guitars set out. He just effortlessly picked them up throughout songs and didn't miss a note. Kids today haven't got a clue what great music is. Yes is the best!

5:43 the goosebumps will ALWAYS be there. It's funny how those notes are used for the 1st time in the 1st part of the song called "Cord of Life", because that title is so accurate to that beginning... This version is quite different to the folk version in the original album, but that's probably what makes it so interesting to listen to. Steve Howe is an amazing guitarist.

I think I have just died and gone to heaven. The live Yessongs album (and the studio album Close to the Edge) was my introduction to Yes way back in the early 1970s as an impressionable teenager (I blame my older sister). I must have listened to it hundreds, maybe even over a thousand times, such that I know all the words and the little "asides" that came during the live performance. I never even knew until today that there was a video of the same performance out there. Thankyou a million times for uploading this - you have made a slightly older man very very happy indeed.

I first say Yes perform live May 1979 in the Boston Garden. I was forever changed that day, and realized Yes was not a band to make pop-hits, they were out to push the limits of music and their talents together. Their performance was other worldly, mesmerizing and larger than life.

jesus christ, could somebody please tell the audience (the front row in particular) how privileged they were to see such genius at the height of their powers. I would have given my right arm to be there and the crowd look comatose...barely clapping at the end...words fail me!

Seminal album of the time . Still on my shelf. Admittedly the sleeve is looking a bit ragged now. Still play it to annoy the neighbours And at 72 still gives me great pleasure.

I really think this is one of the greatest rock songs ever written. The melody is just so beautiful, and the arrangement is so on the spot. Not even to mention the musicianship needed to perform that on stage in the early 70's.

Saw Yes for the first time in 1977 at the midnight movies. Actually went because the Stones were on after Yes. Me, my friends and brother and sister were so blown away by Yessongs that we left early during the Stones because they seemed so flat and boring. I was 15 y/o and have been a fan since.

The really amazing thing is how little time Alan White had to get *all* their tour material down, not just this easy little tune all in one time signature (yes, I understand irony, thanks)-without his efforts this would have been a train-wreck. Drummer knowing where one is at all times is vital to this music.

I first saw Yes when they toured Close to the Edge. I was 17,I think. It was the best live concert I think I have ever seen. I saw them 4 more times. Each show being awesome. Steve Howe is underappreciated as a guitarist. Jon Anderson's vocals are outstanding. The band is one of the best.

Best version ever! Saw YES live 8 times. The last time was 2019 in Nashville TN. at The Grand Ole Opry (Royal Affair Tour). The first time in 1976 in Philadelphia PA. At JFK Stadium. I would love to see them now playing this song and Steve using the Double Neck Electric Guitar instead of the acoustic like he does now. That would be so awesome !!!
