Yesterday and 3 kinds of endings

In this video I pull some words outta thin air to describe how my first read of "Yesterday" (by Juan Emar) was. I read the New Directions paperback of the translation by Megan McDowell. I like Mary Ruefle - I discovered her in a library with a very tall narrow poetry section from where I stood, barely able to reach her I misread her name on the spine Ruffle and decided I had to check her out . Lucky me.

Yeah, I chose her also sort of more or less at random based on having heard her name before and liking the look of her book and the title. Also peeked in and thought that it seemed to be written in a way that wastes no time, gets right to the best quotes, conclusions, questions, jokes, etc.

i love the way bukowski ends poems. styleeee

I've been really enjoying like 2/3 of the poems in the book I highlight ("You Get So Alone") and usually the style of the ending clinches it. It's something about the lightness of the ending that gets me, but also a particular kind of beautifully anticlimactic tone he sometimes achieves.

Until now I had not thought about the ending of Bukowski's poems. Mary Ruefle was a discovery. Juan Emar I shall hunt down. Thanks. Matthew Hollis on early Eliot : *The form was battened down. Gone was the melodious expanse of the Prufrock poems, and in their place* *a tightened lyric tetrameter, in nimbly stitched quatrains, with end rhyme clasping shut every second and fourth line.*

She's a discovery to me too! And that's a good quote. Which of Eliot's poems is Hollis describing as "battened down"? The preludes, maybe? Or things like "The Hippopotamus"?
