Family's debut album this single was from is one of the best ever -- brilliant song-writing and performance. Many people aren't keen on Roger Chapman's vocals, but he's a distinctive singer able to perform both rockers and ballads. Great live too (as YT videos show). Their second album Family Entertainment is even better IMO.

It would be great if you did a video on "The Boston Sound" promotion in 1968 or the criminally underrated group, Orpheus, which released four great albums and five singles. Orpheus is still around and recording a new album at Skywalker Ranch.

Surprisingly, I have rarely read a quote from Steve where he bad mouths Don Arden. Steve had been around in show business before Small Faces and claimed to understand how the business sometimes worked. He has said that Arden made the Small Faces, even though he did take advantage of their youthful ignorance. And even though Arden ripped the Faces off, according to Don's son, he truly loved Steve and was hurt when Steve did badmouth him. Now the other SF's did resent Arden and said so loudly....

@@cindyfalstrom7231 You do know this is the same man who once dangled Robert Stigwood from a high-rise window because he falsely thought Stigwood was trying to steal one of his acts. Then there’s that intriguing story about when Jimmy Page asked to talk to Arden about talking to Marriot, Keith Moon about forming a new super-group after the Yardbirds disbanded that would become Led Zeppelin. Arden’s response: “How would you like to play with five broken fingers”

@davidroberts7282
@davidroberts7282 19 күн бұрын
If you want to break Canada as a UK/European band or musician today or 50 years ago, that also meant you'd have to break US markets, too. I like Canadians. Their good, humble, salt-of-the-earth people so I hope I'm not stepping on any toes, here but when it comes to becoming successful in the commercial music business/concert industry in the North American market, it's not an either/or sort of seperate proposition, it's typically both. Our markets, like our economies, are strongly interlinked and interconnected since the late 19th century. Its as much of an issue as practicality as it is essential geopoliitics. It's unavoidable, really.

I would say songs such as "When My Mind Is Not Live" and "Sunny Cellophane Skies" were more on par with "Pictures of Matchstick Men" since both featured either a trippy dream-like vibe, or a tinge of an acidic sound that perfectly simulated the lysergic experience.

I love “The Universal” and it’s B-side. The Small Faces were understandably floundering a bit after “Ogden’s” and things quite quickly started to fall apart for them, about 4 and a half months later after the single’s release, it was all over for the band. Steve Marriott thought that “The Universal” was one of the best things he ever wrote - but it was out of step with the rest of the band and the times. But still, it’s a great song about where Marriott’s head was at then. Cool video.

"The Universal" could have fitted straight onto Humble Pie's 2nd Album, released in November 1969. Give "Take me back" &:"The Light of Love" a listen , and get into that downhome groove - ( there's even a touch of Sitar on "The Light" !) If Stevie & Pete had reworked or just simply saved "The Universal" for this 2nd Pie no-one would have even raised an eyebrow.

Yes, this was fun to watch. I noticed the Small Faces were on Andrew Oldham's Immediate label. From what I read, Don Arden was a cruel human being. At least his daughter, Sharon, is nice (I met her in 2002). Steve Marriott never had the same success after the Small Faces split in 1968, later turning his back on the music business. As for the Quo, unfortunately, they didn't continue their stateside success. We have an institution here in the USA called the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Quo should have been inducted years ago. Didn't know that about the Average White Band. They reinvented themselves in the 1970s with funk and disco. 1968 was a great year for fashion too. Ron Wood and Steve Howe honed their crafts in the 60s. While I'm here Happy Christmas. I always love watching your videos.

I'd argue that Marriott's next band, Humble Pie, were much bigger than the Small Faces at least in the US. They were huge when I was in high school - Fillmore Live album, Smokin' album, 30 Days in the Hole, etc... Not necessarily better, but different and bigger in the US.

That's a bit of a subjective statement. "Psychedelia" in terms of catchy pop songs might've hit its peak by mid-68, but as an creative, artistic and intellectual sub-genre, psychedelic rock, or "acid rock" still had some great albums, songs and influential conceptual themes left in it before it petered out by the mid-70's. Also many rock critics back then and rock historians even now say their was a stylistic difference between British and American psychedelia---in Britain it tended to be acoustic, pastoral, very whimsical almost fantasy like before it later morphed into complex, elaborate musical themes/music--like progressive rock of the early 70's, in the US, Psychedelic was more akin to harder, heavier rock with darker, more mature themes like war, civil rights and other late 60's tense socio-political issues. U.S. psychedelic bands tended to be edgier, louder, more aggressive on-stage and more experimental in pushing musical boundaries where the song-structure, melodies and lyrics grew more complex, daring and longer. When Led Zeppelin first emerged as a massively successful band, they were marketed as an "acid-rock" band, not as hard rock or heavy metal, that label got pressed on them posthumously. Some of Zep's earlier songs like "Dazed and Confused", " Tangerine", "Ramble On", " How Many More Times " have some trippy, psychedelic elements (lyrical themes, influences, time signatures/special effects).

Thanks for the early Christmas present! While I lived in Boston, Mass, that summer, I never saw a single one of these singles. Guess that makes me a provincial. I did buy the Family and Fleetwood Mac albums (Fleetwood Mac's early American albums had different tracks). Even 'Lincoln County' did not make an appearance in the States until "The Great Lost Kinks Album." Lost in record company politics I suppose. I have discovered/uncovered most of these songs in the years since, but Hopscotch and a couple of others are bands that I never even heard of before. Another very enjoyable trip! So many really good UK singles in '68. I've always thought Plastic Penny missed a trick by putting the very commercial (and very groovy) 'Baby You're Not To Blame' on the flip of 'Your Way To Tell Me Go' as it's the much stronger track of the two. The Sleepy were an interesting band- 'Rosie Can't Fly' is worth checking out as a great example of UK pop-psych.

This month fetured singles by two of my favorite bands - Small Faces and Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. Two brilliant bands that were unfortunately too short lived (I know Mac continued, but not the same without Peter). It's sad that "The Universal" was panned by the critics. I love the song and "Donkey Rides" too. Steve said that the record's title was supposed to be "Hello, The Universal" , which I think explains the lyrics better. This was Steve in a happy, place greeting the day and the universe. Sadly, the failure put him in a very unhappy place and contributed to SF's demise. Now Donkey Ride has some quirky lyrics, but I think its' charming and very English. RIP Steve Marriott and Peter Green -two geniuses...

Family were one of my favourite bands in the late sixties and early seventies, I liked the band Streetwalkers featuring Roger Chapman and Charlie Whitney too. I liked The Universal, perhaps the Small Faces were inspired to release it because of the success busker Don Partridge had had, but I think they would have been better releasing the B side as the A. Another interesting selection of songs anyway. Have a merry Christmas and New Year.

15:26 "Nothing But a Heartache" was the first thing that came to mind when I heard the clip of "Romeo and Juliette", without knowing who wrote either. Songwriters do seem to have their signature riffs; seeing old reruns of shows like "Lost in Space", "Land of the Giants" and "Time Tunnel", the writing style John Williams used for Star Wars and Close Encounters is hard to miss.

Another great video. But alot of these bands were pretty much shut out in the U.S. market. The Beatles, Stones, Motown, and Bubble Gum Top 40 owned A.M. radio in '68. Album Oriented Rock F.M. was a year or two away. Our loss.

I well remember going to a guy's flat in the early 1980s (to buy er...substances...) and he had loads of 1960s singles and albums and him selling me a copy of Alan Hogg's 'Bam Balam' fanzine which was all about obscure 1960s psych bands. It was very interesting discovering this almost forgotten treasure trove of great music although buying almost any vinyl was very difficult, though reissue LPs by groups like The Action and The Creation did soon appear. 'Record Collector' magazine was the vital publication of that era for fans of that music but even then stuff was changing hands for a lot of money, which in early 1980s terms meant like £50 and was therefore out of the range of some 16-year-old as I was then.

15:23 People are always wishing it was possible to time-travel -- but it is possible. We take photography and film for granted, yet it is a visual portal into another time It's absolutely incredible that you're seeing a whole street in motion in the 1960's. This is a form of time-travel. (If you slow that bit of film down to 0.25x, you get a real sense of being in that street). :0)

Superb vid; not familiar with many of these bands. The late Paul Raymond was in Plastic Penny before moving on to Chicken Shack (after Christine Perfect-later-McVie left that band), Savoy Brown, and UFO, among others; Nigel Olsson, the drummer, of course would soon become Elton John's go-to drummer. I first came across Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, MIck & Tich when they were mentioned in passing In Nik Cohn's "Awopbopaloobop Alopbamboom" (published here in the states as "Rock From The Beginning") when I was a teenager in the early '70s (I still have the paperback, which I bought in a jasmine incense-scented head shop in Dallas, where I grew up before I got the hell out, in '71 or '72; it's practically fallen apart due to countless re-readings- I liked Nik Cohn's writing style then, not so much now- and is well-preserved in a resealable plastic sandwich bag and has a psychedelic drawing of a Hendrix-like- guitarist on the front cover); I never thought much about them until I became intrigued several years back for the trailers to the film "Last Night in Soho." I ended up seeing the movie on a streaming service in 2022 and, in spite of an excellent cast (Diana Rigg in her last film, Terence Stamp, Rita Tushingham, and of course the young actresses in principal roles) and was visually beautiful, but fatally hampered by a ludicrous and incoherent script and revealers that made absolutely no sense; too bad this was the swan song for Diana Rigg, to whom the movie was dedicated. But It gave me the opportunity to listen for the first time to DD, D, B, M & T and the song itself is for me a winner. I wish we had more exposure to talents like Keith West here in the States. Same witih Toby Twirl, Skip Biffington and too many others. Thanks again for another fine vid, YP, hoping for happy holidays and a hopeful 2025 for you; we here in the States will resist fascism (it may become a full-time job for me, on the cusp of 70) as best we can.

Love the footage of clubgoers dancing to the era's music. I fancy anything by Skip Bifferty, their sole LP is a hands down classic to my ears. Vocalist Graham Bell had really soulful Stevie Winwood-like vocals. Syd Barrett once said in an interview that FAMILY did 'nice things' so he obviously dug them. They seem to have been an influence on Peter Gabriel/Genesis. Hadn't heard the GLASS OPENING single in a long time, that's one groovy number!
