i work with a guy that is from sonora mexico. he speaks a little bit of english but it is probably the equivalent to a 4 year olds speech at best. i still get along better with him than anyone else at work and we have conversation just as much as anyone else. we just have to use a translator🤣 it all comes down to the fact that me and him are hard workers and want to chase our dreams in our lives. we share a like mindedness that allows it to not matter if we speak other languages.

@@Shindenize You are right. In the documentary they referred to them repeatedly as "Sumos" too. The opening clip see them saying in the car we must call them Rikishi. I might be wrong, but sounds like Thomas Brag (France) is making the mistake most often. Or maybe I mean Staffan Taylor (Sweden), either way both are non-native speakers. Having lived over 20 years in France, I can tell you it's difficult living in a different country.

@@herrmannelig9033 This, they are not a big friendly family. Sumo is strict, there is a strict hierarchical way of doing things that is not shown in the video. The newer you are, the lower you are on the totem pole. You do all the chores, cook the food, do the shopping, cleaning, etc. AND have to do all the training on top of that. The higher rank you are, you get to take it easy and focus on your skills. So the good get better and the bad must strive harder to survive.

People from all over the world come to Japan to become sumo wrestlers because they can get rich. In particular, many strong sumo wrestlers have been born from Mongolia. This is an awesome ancient form of fighting, and mad respect to these guys who dedicate their life to it and are just absolutely ferocious. I haven't watched much Sumo wrestling so I still haven't adjusted to constantly seeing gigantic celluloid - covered butt cheeks jiggling around all over the place. Crack city USA! I think I know what some of these guys had for lunch yesterday and could construct a 3-dimensional model of the contours of their ass, pimples included. OK, I'm done. Butts are funny, what can I say. Butt - I'm sure after watching it more I won't be so distracted by the big white butts and the 12 inch butt cracks to go halfway up their backs. Because the fighting itself is super impressive and cool to watch, and heck I'd love to try it sometime (and then it'll be my gigantic white butt flapping around with some weird fabric shoved into my crack). I used to do jui-jitsu and have done other martial arts and this one just seems incredible. The only thing is - I worry about how long these guys will live with the diets they eat. I hope I'm wrong and they all live super long and healthy lives :)

@@LiveYourLifeWithJoy not japanese, but I would guess that the weight gives them a big advantage in wrestling opponents. As far as health goes, they can stay healthy while also being obese, as the weight they put on doesn't look like it's from junk food but just by eating a huge volume of healthier foods. And also they practice and exercise enough to build the muscle that would help support their weight and use the extra calories. I'm not sure how that affects them later in life when they are not able to train as much, but these guys are probably not less healthy than the average person

Please do not give up. At the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake, there was a woman who was hospitalized with terminal cancer. She desperately clung to her hospital bed to avoid being swept away by the tsunami. Many people died, but she survived and worked hard for those who died. Then the cancer cells disappeared. It has been in the news several times, but it seems that he is now working well in the cafeteria. I pray from Japan that a miracle will happen to you too. For those of you who don’t know, the last guy Thomas fought (Onosho) is actually one of the top rikishi in all of Japan. It’s quite amazing to see the more human side of these amazing athletes, and to see Thomas basically fighting the “Messi” of Sumo. As always, great job to the whole team, amazing storytelling and a great journey into this wonderful aspect of Japanese culture. 👍🏻

With all the talk of how Sumo is so secretive and almost a closed society, you get the idea that this sort of thing wouldn't be possible. But this shows exactly what I thought the wrestlers would really be like. I have had the pleasure of visiting Japan twice and even though I do not speak Japanese and have never been exposed to much of the culture beforehand ( I'm in the UK), the Japanese (at least the ones that I met) were so open and happy if you try to experience the way of life there, whether that be through mumbling your way through a little Japanese, or taking a real interest in what is going on and how they do something. I stopped by a knife shop in Kyoto and once the guy there who was hand sharpening knives found out that I do my own sharpening, his face lit up and we chatted for a while via translators about stones and knives, he wanted to see pictures of my collection. It was just like we have seen here, you show interest and try and it all becomes big smiles and sharing. I would love to experience Sumo like this. I have no doubt that my skill level would be like this as well, getting pushed around and thrown out of the ring within seconds, but that's all good.

For being new and not familiar with Sumo, you guys did fantastic in interacting with them, and the opportunity you got is nearly unprecedented. I've never seen or heard about foreigners (that aren't rikishis/aspiring rikishis) getting to participate in not just the training session but also throughout the entire day. It was clear they had fun just as you did, and you managed to mingle true respect and admiration with a disarming openness. Also amazing that the heya (stable) you visited, called Ōnomatsu, was the one of Onosho, a skilled wrestler in the top division. I think it would've been nice of you to mention the specific heya you visited, so people could know who did this great service (along with you) of showing Sumo to the world. It'll be interesting to follow the mongolian guy in the future (Batjargal?) since he's a university champion and they tend to do quite well in grand Sumo. Also, for anyone who got interested in Sumo from this, it's a very fun sport to follow, mostly because of the wrestlers/rikishis themselves, and that it is so much more than a sport. Next tournament will be in may, and it's sure to be very exciting as the only current Yokuzuna, Terunofuji, will make his long awaited return since recovering from injuries! If you're curious about it you should give it a try and watch it! Thanks for the great video!

Quick note: Masurao (益荒男) is a pretty cool compliment; translated, it means 'a man's man', or, a little jokingly (but very positively), 'a macho man'. A brave, strong warrior of a dude. I think it fits. Literally translating the kanji, though, you get 'a man who seeks out scarcity'; in other words, 'one who seeks discomfort'. And I think that's just neat.
