Prince was music. It flowed through him and it is truly what he lived to do. He heard his music in his head and played all instruments to record the song, sing and harmonise the song. He wrote and recorded one or more songs a day. There are over 8000 unreleased songs plus 12 finished albums, films, rehearsals and live shows all recoded and stored in the vaults. They say there is enough music to release through the next 100 years.

The thing with Prince was when you saw him live, somehow, you became ONE with Prince and the band. I can only liken it being at Church and everyone is just "Together", everyone feeling the same, thinking the same - a pure spiritual experience. Also, you could go and see him every night of the week and it'd be different. Sure you'd have the hits and maybe some songs from the latest release, but every night you could get a different arrangement of some of those songs, different words, extended versions, different medleys of songs... He never got bored of playing live, we never got bored of seeing him. He did say he got tired of playing Purple Rain every night but he never got tired of the reaction. He did "retire" some songs for a few years, but that was OK as he had plenty of gems which he started to play more often... He also treated B-Sides as equally as a hit. Many artists forget their b-sides! What people also forget, was that he started out Playing RnB. Here's a song when he revisited playing the blues in 1994/5 and it would be interesting to see you react to it. It is called "The Ride" performed with my favourite incarnation of his Band, The NPG: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmO4eIednp2olZo

Montreux 2009 Prince's concert as a whole is brilliant. Some heavy guitar rock with slow jazz rock in it. Prince's version of Little Red Corvette (slow down) is an extended slow jam version. Makes it a completely different version of the song. He opens the concert With "When eye lay my hands on u." A song that flows as the temptation of the lyrics and music simultaneously builds.

Nice reaction. You mentioned that it looked like Prince might be preoccupied during this performance. This was actually Prince’s first concert after Michael Jackson passed away. He was in rehearsal when he got the news. He shut everything down (maybe for a few days) and stayed in his room. I’ve seen a recording of this concert and it’s really good. It’s a smaller unit, as you noticed, but he included a variety of songs and strong guitar.

You have some of the best and most interesting reactions to Prince that I have ever seen. That second, jazzier song that he did here, is called, "Elixir". And yes, that word is a double entendre. Even in his latter years, when he was supposedly less "risqué", he was never not sensual, sexual, and able to turn a phrase that left you with no doubt as to where his head was at. Keep digging deeper, my friend. You are on an incredible musical journey.

When this performance was recorded, it was a month after his rival/friend Michael Jackson had passed away. Tavis Smiley revealed this in an interview when he visited Prince as guest in Switzerland where this performance was recorded. He said that Prince, upon hearing that Jackson had passed, canceled a weeks worth of rehearsals for this performance and locked himself in his room at Paisley Park for a week. When he spoke to Prince in Switzerland, he said that all Prince could talk about was his respect for MJ and his work.

The more you discover Prince you will see he played all genres of music. His bandmembers have always said he was the consummate bandleader. React to him doing Motherless Child Live and you will see how he directs his band throughout the performance. They had to watch him throughout because he was known to change the direction of the song right in the middle. I love hearing your knowledge of his guitar skills from someone who plays! Am really leased that you’re discovering Prince. Splendid musician, he truly made the most of his gifts and worked at it as a daily regimen. He also loved getting under the sack and crowing about it, hence- when I saw him live, the “songs for the ladies” would seriously paint a funky smell in the arena. Your comments on the lack of excess on his peddleboard is very perceptive. If you ever watch a full concert, you'll notice that there aren't really 'breaks' between songs... He used lots of techniques to keep the concert rolling and have the band play almost continuously. It is something that has bugged me about other big acts that there is so much downtime between songs. I feel his small peddleboard is one way this manifested itself. Less junk, less things to go wrong, less things he couldn't trigger himself at the perfect time. His shows were rehearsed to a huge extent so that he could improvise over the top of it all and let the atmosphere of the room dictate the direction of the setlist. His near daily performing at his own Paisley Park Studios - albeit studio recording or putting on an informal gig - meant he was never more than a day or two away from being concert ready. Just a stellar talent.

He was and having the facility at Paisley was brilliant to always have the musicians show ready and constantly looking at their performance. Although he could have afforded the best guitar techs to fix any problems while playing live, he chose to keep things really simple.

The covers he did were also songs he made his own with the arrangements. Many artists have commented that he was the finest arranger ever. I have been listening to his cover of Brian Ferry’s “ More than This”. It is wonderful and in his own unique range. He was one of only 6 people in the world with the largest vocal range of octaves. He wrote ‘ It took me five women to get over you’. for Joe Cocker. I think that is a great song. ( may have the title a little jumbled) He wrote and gave the songs to many artists.

The only reactor I've seen who gets it about PRN's guitar playing - there are guys who are faster & more technical, etc., etc., but in Prince you have one musician with superb technique as a lead and rhythm guitar player, with years of knowledge and skill in multiple genres (rock, R&B, blues, jazz, new wave, funk, and more), who is near the pinnacle of conveying emotion when he plays - with a track record that spans decades. Most importantly, he's not afraid to take risks (playing-wise and career-wise). I don't care what anybody says...I've seen him in Detroit, San Francisco, Minneapolis, DC, and Baltimore...Prince is THE one. (PS: guitar gems on Montreux 2009, Set #2 --> Stratus/All Shook Up, Peach, Spanish Castle Magic, All the Critics...) Subbed...

His first 5 albums (in his early twenties) were recorded with only him alone in the studio playing all instruments, having written all music and lyrics and doing all vocals and harmonies. Just him alone. He only hired band members when he was to tour at the beginning but ofcourse other musicians eventually introduced music and expanded his knowledge.

He was in pain and with his skills to own a stage, covered it up like .....no words, it's unbelievable.

Prince ALWAYS showcased his band and ALWAYS had female musicians with him. If you have the opportunity will you react to Prince with his female group “Third eye girl” and the song was a a short clip of their rehearsal for “plectrumelectrum” which was rehearsed at his home/studio “Paisley Park “💜😃

Prince would tailor his sets to the occasion, this performance was from a Jazz festival in Switzerland so leaned more towards his jazz side. I just love this performance, it's so emotional and was an unreleased song from around 1985 about a breakup with fiancé Susannah Melvoin. Prince seemed to be married to his music and relationships suffered, he had a colorful dating history to say the least. I was always curious about this performance, there's a scratch on his hand that's bleeding -- would he have done that on purpose to feel physical pain before singing such an emotional personal song? Great reaction, you have that look of falling into the Prince rabbit-hole.

You talked about transcendence and I instantly remembered of Prince performance of Purple Rain at Syracuse, kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJ6TZKqngb5mhMU this is a 15 minute performance with an 8 minute solo at the end, and during that solo, before the "oooh oooh" section, you can see in Prince's face that even he doesn't know what just happened, you can even see him pretty much thanking god and looking up because he just went soooo hard. That's a must see, most of those 15 minutes are guitar solos, before and after the actual song.

If you could read Duane Tudahl’s books of Prince’s working life you will understand he lived for music. Duane has done 1984-1985 in book one and 1985-1986 in book two. Paisley park was finished in 1987 and he did all his recording there and stored everything in his vault there, until he filled it and found another to fill. He was prolific and the music in his head that he had to get down when it came, determined his life according to him.

You can purchase the books at any good bookstore. I am hoping he is doing 1986 - 1987 next. The books are copied from his working diaries and recording records and many interviews of band members. Very interesting. Enjoy.

@YesYouCANPlayGuitar, Prince has always had the brooding, "going through something." It is often about feeling like he deserves love, craves it, gives it, but either loses it, or fears losing it, to competition, and a fickle partner. Listen to "Got a Broken Heart Again," "When You Were Mine," or, "The Beautiful Ones." His odes to love, "Nothing Compares 2U," and, "Arms of Orion," those are purely his pouring out of his ability to adore someone, but even there, the first of these pre-supposes having to at least imagine the loss, to realise the depth of feelings. If you listen to his albums in release order, knowing "Purple Rain" is semi-autobiographical, you will get a lot of him, but you would have to have lived through hearing what society was saying to understand more. In spite of his immense talents, he always heard the criticisms, and took too many to heart. Him being hard to work with for some reflects this. Being wrong, told one is wrong, by someone one respects, means that being less than what he thought he might be is possible. Just my take, as a fan of his since at least 1984. I have most of his albums, some on vinyl, others cassettes, and a few CDs. He is replete in my YT saved public playlist of my music choices.

I’ve seen an interview somewhere where they said he was experiencing some kind of pain from his hip injuries over the years around this time. They explained that is why he wasn’t really moving around on the stage as much. It was also and ode to why he focused more on the intense playing of guitar. However, this is one song from the entire gig and the gig was multiple days. All that not withstanding, if you’ve seen enough performances, he does have a quality to build up a performance that may start off soft or mild and he’ll take it to a higher plane.

Just wanted to share a couple things... 1. Prince always told his band members to put in the same effort whether they were playing for 80,000 or just 8. You can truly see that work ethic and connection to the music in every performance. I also have a clip to share with you where Prince is talking about that feeling of transcendence at a show at Paisley Park in November of 2015: drive.google.com/file/d/1XnpKZZ4nxtxkmVmRi3y_C-FFlc__c5d9/view?usp=sharing 2. We had a few of those moments when I played in the pep band in high school. Our director would make us do these exercises during rehearsals where we would all close our eyes and have to breathe together and start playing at the same time. We did it over and over again until we were all in tune with each other mentally and all started playing at the same time, and there were probably 60 of us in that band. That was probably one of the best bands I've ever played in. Our basketball team won the state championship every year I was in high school, so we played a lot at the Target Center in Downtown Minneapolis. And there was an article after one of the games where the journalist said our pep band was better than any of the division I university bands they'd ever seen, and I believe they specifically mentioned Duke University and us being better than their pep band. Anyway...I think those exercises of breathing together made us an amazing band, and we had a few of those transcendental moments. I think one of them was during a rehearsal when we were playing "Hell" by Squirrel Nut Zippers, and that's still one of my favorite songs to play.

Well Prince wrote this song a long time ago during the recording of Purple Rain. He never released it Dr. Susan Rogers said. She used to be his engineer from 83 to 87. Prince used to tell his musicians we are playing for the people. He used to tell them , you don't have a good time. But, when you get up on the stage you make sure you give them what they want. That's what Levi Seacer said he told him, after he told Prince backstage to have a good show. He got that rhetoric from Prince. Never tell me to have a good show is what how told him.

Actually the Montreux 2009 Shows with John Blackwell, Rhonda Smith, Morris Hayes, and Renato Neto were really special because of the emotional state prince was in at that time. Just before the shows were scheduled Michael Jackson passed. Prince was devastated and postponed the shows. When he was ready to perform, he wore that red suit probably in respect to MJ's Thriller look. Tavis Smiley, the renowned journalist was there at the show. After the show, Prince and Tavis went to Prince's suite that faced the mountians and the huge Lake. At midnight both went out into the balcony and sat there 'til the sun came up, talking just how great MJ was, Tavis said that Prince had to put his sorrow out of his system and wanted to talk. So, I believe the song Empty Room might have meant something different to him that night. After MJ's passing the room felt empty and he knew only he could fill it. That is purely my analogy.
