To this very day 300 yrs after Domenico Scarlatti composed this music it is still a challenge for even the best professional pianists to perform. DS must be rocking and rolling in heaven.

I love the romantic version of Scarlatti. Beautiful. I don't understand what is wrong with reinterpreting things. 300 years passed, it is normal to have more than one way of understanding at music.

Scarlatti would approve this, bravo! If he have had a modern piano at his hands, he would have probably played his piece similarly. He was an Italian, after all. And a genius.

Smooth and expressive playing. I think I like it better than Michelangeli's 1962 rendition. I'm sure Domenico Scarlatti would warm to the colour an accomplished pianist like Mr Sudbin can give to a piece played on a piano, despite that not being possible on the keyboard instruments of Scarlatti's era.

Man, this piece was written when modern piano didn't even exist. There's already no need to stick with traditional baroque style this case. If you are so upset with usage of pedal, much legato, fast tempo etc., please go search for harpsichord version.

People in those days dreamed of the piano today and to be able to play like us ( To freely articulate and express oneself much more naturally ) and yet there are people here judging, that they don't sound like what was back then ( I'm suppose they were referring to harpsichord or clavichord ) what an irony.

Scarlatti can take it! He went from being a rather conventional baroque composer (home with dad), absorbed all the new things in Spain - and ended up on the verge of early romanticism. Quite a stretch!

Man, its such a poor perspective, if you think, that the art of interpretation should be only historical correct performances..like busoni said: „every notation is trancription of an abstract idea...a transcription or interpretation does never destroy the composition.“ everything is perspective and thats what makes our world so interesting and special. we can learn from every perspective. even if you don’t like something there is a possibility that you took the wrong perspective. stay flexible my dear friends and never stop learning💪

Brilliant playing,astonishing virtuosity, yet I must agree with other comments bellow that ,this repertoire by Scarlatti and especially J.S.Bach was meant to be played on the early keyboards of the day,in my opinion a Modern Grand Piano produces excessive Bass content by it's nature,this property seems to mar the agility of the music,kind of struggles or competes with the Treble frequencies,which somehow diminish it's brilliance.

I totally agree with all the comments about the pedal. Yes, pedal is ok to add here in there in baroque music but that's usually to smooth something over, not to actually SUSTAIN. Second, those commenting on the speed being too fast, take out a metronome and dial it up to allegro (the desired tempo), he's actually right within that tempo marking.

It is quite a difficult piece, but in ways very accessible. If you listen to Gilels playing it, he plays it a bit slower than this. If you're comfortable with the speed in which they play, and you don't have a problem with cross-overs, then you shouldn't struggle too much.

I see. I've just heard the piece Gilels playing, I also love it!! But, for me, about its speed and comfort of playing, Sudbin's is better than Gilels' one. I think there is probably no problem about technique, so I will try this!!! Thank you for your kindness!!

I think it's okay to use some light pedal to a certain extend, and if you have the chance to play the harpsichord, you will eventually realize that the OVERTONE on that instrument will sound similar to some light pedal on the piano :)

He isn't aiming to please a baroque audience he is taking a baroque piece and using a modern piano to create a new interpretation. There is a historically accurate way to play something, and it is clear he is not going for that interpretation, so it is not 'too' anything. He is a master pianist who has given us an incredible interpretation of what can be a very wooden piece.

why using pedal
@hdholl
@hdholl 8 жыл бұрын
Exact. This guy thinks he is playing Bang-bang Beethoven, for crying out loud. Not the faintest idea about what it takes to play fragile baroque polyphonic music. Technically brilliant (and showing it off), but musically an absolute disaster. Go home and do your homework (including studying the history of music), Yev!

I don't understand why people are so insistent on refraining from the use of pedal in earlier music. I understand it's best avoided as a lot of the music isn't suited to it, but if you can make it work, like Yevgeny does here, then it is a viable choice in interpretation. We live in the 21st century, not the 17th - why shouldn't we embrace newer, modern technology? What if the composers would prefer this technology if they were alive today? Everything is open to interpretation.
@hdholl
@hdholl 8 жыл бұрын
Because the pedal makes *all* the notes sound longer, also those that should last only as long as you press their key (as the score demands), drowning everything in one dissonant swamp of notes. It is contrary to the essence of polyphonic music, with its distinct and articulate individual voices. I suggest you learn about polyphony and follow the score while listening to this badly played sonata.
