Let’s change the subject. Yami/Atem: One thing I know for sure, is that as long as you hold the millennium puzzle, I can exist. (He stares this as if that’s the only thing he knows, since he has no idea who he is, it implies he doesn’t know a lot about himself. But he knows this one thing.) Yugi: That’s enough. Yami/Atem: But I... (Yugi interrupts him) ......I want to be with you forever. Even if I never get my memory back (it’s fine, so long as I am with you) Yugi: Me too. Forever. I’ll give you all of my memories. He originally was going to say that since Yugi is the reason he continues to exist he wants to stay with him. So in the beginning he didn’t want his memories back if it meant being separated from Yugi. Then enter the plot lol. Such a good series. So much more than just card games. This Japanese used in the series is what made me the translator I am today. I subbed Dark Side of Dimensions and it was a dream come true! Love love love Japanese.

@@valeriewinter6217 'Cause the effing plot said he "had" to ;__; I suppose in one way, it does bring closure to Yami/Atem to fully who he was, but CONSIDERING he was given another shot at life, he had the option of staying if he wanted to! Correction, GUARENTEED HE WANTED TO 'STAY', PROVEN IN THIS VERY EPISODE!! But then "plot" says, f*ck that. Which makes Yami's confession to Yugi, heartbreakingly null. I find it bullshit that Atem learning who he was now meant he HAD to go on and LEAVE Yugi by dying. He could've stayed and moved on with or without Yugi WITHOUT dying, build another life for himself in the modern world instead of following the whole "destined to duel his other half/Yugi must learn to be on his own" bullcrap. ('cause c'mon Yugi proves it over and over again throughout the series that he can stand on his own, don't need a final dramatic card game to rub it in) In other words, Yu-Gi-Oh really missed the opportunity to be stronger and more meaningful if it was more character-driven than plot-driven. (TOO many times have I wanted Ishizu to just shut her damn mouth about "fulfilling prophecy.")

It’s not like they were ever lovers. That’s pretty much dating yourself. That’ll be hard to do. And it depends on how you interpret it too. Guys can be good friends you know. It’s no different then saying a guy and a girl that are good friends are obviously more then friends. That’s not always the case. I’ve always seen Atem more like an older sibling to Yugi. Atem's and Yugi's relationship isn't a brotherly or friendly one despite what some peeps here claim, it's much more. Not only does the series already have a ton of emotional sibling relationships as character dynamic (Seto & Mokuba, Joey & Serenity, the Roba brothers, Alister & his little brother just to name a few), but also the scenes between Atem and Yugi are so intimate they HAD TO BE CENSORED. 4kids wouldn't have had to mute down the gay if they were as harmless as brotherly feelings.

Well re-watching this while in quarantine makes me think of a lot of things. Sure I love puzzleshipping and I still read fanfic about it, but this here is so much more than a simple brotherly bond or a romantic attraction. These two love each other deeply, because they complete one another. Yugi offers Atem a chance to find himself and even create new memories. He teaches him the values of true courage, friendship, family, nobility, fair gaming... Everything he will need in order to become a better person who is at peace with himself and does not punish people with cruel shadow games. On the other hand, Atem teaches Yugi how to trust in his own strength, he brings him closer to his friends and is always there to protect him if need be. So, he is making sure that the boy will grow up to be a good independent young nan. So, of course they love one another. They relay on one another a great deal in order to be better men. As such, wanting to stay with each other forever is a testament to how much they need their bond and an acknowledgement of how much they both have to learn yet. By the end of the series, they go their separate ways, but they will always carry a part of the other in their harts. That happens to the best of friends who move on, as well as to the most intimate of lovers, who put each other above their own desire.

MadameTamma Wow, that it is a really great point to make! I’ve been watching the Japanese version of the show lately and there’s much more depth in the dialogue, it’s so good!! So lately my view on the relationships between all the characters, especially between Yugi and Atem/Yami is more symbolic and a coming of age thing. Young people go through a phase of trying to understand themselves and what it’s like to experience different levels of attraction, like what does it mean to love someone? So who knows, maybe Yugi is more than just gay or straight? So either way in the end, the show leaves open ends for interpretation

no, in the show love is never hidden, or at least to us. Anzu loves deeply the pharaoh and yugi is always jealous about her. the same with priest seto and kisara... where love is shown, we can't hide it's just like it is. I don't understand when people think Yami and Seto are a couple or Yugi and Yami are a couple... I'm the first one to see the deep connection between Yugi and the pharaoh, but who wouldn't be acting the same if one has to share the same body for 3 years? expecially when you are opposites, and you learn each other a lot.

Marica Regina I don't know. Have you ever heard how it is a japanese indirect marriage proposal? Someone can say "I could eat everyday that delicious food you made" or "Nevermore want to show at anyone your face without makeup". I mention it because I was studying japanese and one also learn how other kind of interactions are involved in language and its understanding. It's difficult to explain. But you can look through KZbin, there are youtubers that explain the topic (for example, Kira sensei). I am not trying to impose my point of view, just trying to explain what I mean.

I just like to say, 4Kids fucked up the whole story, in the 4Kids dub in this scene, the Pharaoh didn't talk about not remembering his name. In Episode 41 The Pharaoh told Yugi his name is Yami, when episodes 41 and 52 was aired in the US, season 3 was almost done in Japan, so 4Kids really fucked it all up, they don't even watch the later seasons before the dub the episodes they were up to
