I've been reading up on Stockholm syndrome ever since ch.139 came out, and I'm still perplexed how anyone can make such horrible comparison between Ymir and Fritz. Stockholm syndrome, for starters, is not a certified physiological disorder and has little scientific backing. It's merely a blanket term to define why some captives may empathize and possibly love their captors. It's largely perpetuated by the FBI and the U.S. film industry. The closest evidence I could find was the Standford Prison experiment, which makes the ultimate leap in stating that since captives follow orders so obediently, they must empathize with their captors. At best, it could be considered a myth, created by famous kidnappings and robberies. Despite the history of Stockholm syndrome, Ymir exhibits none of the characteristics of someone in that situation. Fritz provides no safety for Ymir, quite the opposite in fact, as he sentences her to death after setting the pigs free. Ymir also has the means to escape, provide for herself, and protect her own life with the power of the Founder. She is never once comforted by Fritz and never expresses any romantic interest in him. In fact, they never even touch each other. Even in death, Fritz doesn't lay a hand on her. Her death should be evidence enough against Stockholm syndrome, as she allows herself to die and finally be free. Ymir is a mess of a character that was ruined by ch.139. She is one of the mistakes that Isayama can't ever fix and one that Ending defenders can't ever explain. It wasn't Stockholm syndrome, it wasn't determinism, it was bad writing. End of story.

Ymir never love Fritz. Never. Some us interpret that it was Eren who misunderstood her (Isayama literally made him stupid AF by using the 愛 kanji that means the highest form of love), so the Mikasa-Ymir parallel can be shoved down to us to make Mikasa relevant to the plot. In Kimi Ga Fusawashii song, Ymir got two choices : erase her existence or being reborn. And with the speculation of AOE, Ymir gonna choose to be reborn after Rumbling (aka the Ragnarok). But in the manga, she choose to erase her existence. Isayama totally messed up the ending in order to reach that conclusion for Ymir.

Historia : Love with her childhood bully who threw rocks at her on and was definately not happy in that realtionship. She ended up just like her parents. Annie: love with guy who revealed her identity to the scouts whic resulted her in getting crystallized in the first place, He showed no feeling for her throughout S2-3 and used her as a means of manipulating Bertholth twice. He only visits her after consuming him. Is the one of the major reason she never got to be with her father. It's basically a prisoner following in love with jailor( SS i guess) Ymir: love with the guy who killed her family, burned her village, made a slave of her raped her into bearing children, abused her abilities to commit genocide against humanities outside the walls. After she sacrifices her life, she asks his daughter to cannibilize her corpse.

They try to justify a syndrome (that is not even recognized in the DSM-V) for others to like the ending. I thought at first she has dependent personality disorder but as reread/rewatch she had a choice and she would not have sacrificed herself if she is dependent on him. In conclusion she has a “slave mentality” and she doesn’t know from a young age what freedom really is. It’s her desire to survive that made her comeback to Fritz and serve him. She first transformed into a titan of course Fritz’s men either will kill her or let her live so she chose to live and serve him forever.

I'm gonna give my views in this, and personally I didn't like the ending so its not like I'm actually defending it, but still, the first time i read that chapter i always saw it as Stockholm syndrome. Why did she sacrifice herself for Fritz? How Fritz´s men are going to kill her being a fucking titan? like, she is 15 meters tall and we are talking about 2000 years ago. Humanity is afraid of titans as fuck nowadays, do you think they could do something against a titan in those years? it is known that ymir was the reason that eldia sort of "won" to marley... so it makes no sense that they can just kill a titan. So how would you answer to these? I mean, i am just curious, not judging or anything
@chocolatephantasms2 жыл бұрын
@@santiago4444 if it’s stockholm syndrome when did Fritz showed that he “cared” for her for her to develop a bond or attachment or even love to him? I only said that her desire to survive is what drives her to go back to him. Cause yeah she first transformed into a titan of course Fritz’s men will be first afraid of her but where will she go? She doesn’t know how to fight back she will just simply run away again and again and Fritz’s men will hunt her cause she’s not truly free and be a threat to Eldians cause she’s a titan so for her to survive she went back to Fritz and serve him cause at least she lives and be useful but she’s not free. Of course she sacrificed herself to Fritz cause she’s a slave, it’s ingrained in her to protect him. She could regenerate but there she realized that she had enough. She lost her will to live, to survive. She wants to be free but she wasn’t again cause she just moved to Paths-a land that is free of death. Another interpretation is you can also go back to the myth of Krista= Ymir is Krista she is trying to be a girl that’s wanted to be loved by everyone. She’s trying to please everybody. She wanted to be loved but she didn’t love Fritz. That’s why I hate that she loved Fritz reveal cause it doesn’t make sense. Attached is possible but it’s not a romantic bond as the manga revealed it to be.

I don't think anyone on earth could kill her at the time. she could have freed her people and killed the king, she could have ruled all of earth and make herself queen or empress, starts a new civilisation and the whole world would fall under her power and follow her lead as she was literally unbeatable at that point and no army could defeat her at the time where the only weapons were swords, spears and arrows. In fact it's because of her powers in the first place that the eldian empire came to be and dominated the world. she was the only titan with all the power of the nine in her at once, and we have seen that even if your head get blown off in your human form the founding titan have the abilities to reattach it. she could have been a goddess, so the only reason she went back being a slave is because of her slave mindset and psychological shackles.

Or better, make him her slave. Literally her wielding such an enormous power in front of people who clearly lived in medieval or pre-medieval era, would have instantly without any questions made her a Goddess in their eyes; but no, she chose to remain a pathetic lowly slave with no thoughts of her own and to live her life abused and degraded. 1 - Simply doesn't work within the current framework. That whole situation would've had to been different for people to really buy it unless they strongly handwave it with Ymir having the uber-slave morality. 2 - Mikasa and her conclusion in my opinion work better if she's not a part of the plan, but a purposeful wrench/wild card of the plan. Like, Ymir allowing this one bloodline of people to live with a unique power and be free of other Founding Titans' manipulations *just* to see if that affects things, and giving them a power-related or not penchant for over-reliance just because she was genuinely curious if someone can break out of such a mentality. If Mikasa's choice was always part of the plan, the MAIN part of the plan, it weakens the resolution, in my opinion. 3 - I did a long message about this under another video, so I'll just re-state : I kind of like 80% on a theme level but I think it was executed badly, and would be better off if that resolution was more of a 'If I have to kill my friends I prefer this resolution' choice by Eren, or a genuine LOSS as a result of allowing his friends freedom, rather than a completely lacking setup 'plan all along'.

Stockholm Syndrome has never been tested. It was one incident in which it happened in Stockholm with hostages. Therefore it is anecdotal data, it cannot be used as a legitimate Theory to say anything about human behavior. Isayama should have been more careful about writing love into Ymirs story. Many children do find themselves in situations with adults who take advantage of them. And to paint a picture of that situation into your story and call it love makes me so sick to my stomach. now the public slaps the term Stockholm on it without even knowing what that means. It would be nice for people to forget that word and to acknowledge that attack on Titan sucks because it ignorantly says one of the characters is in love with her pedophilic rapist. All Isayama really needed to do to actually sell this 'Ymir dies saving Fritz' was place one of her daughters on Fritz' lap when the assassination attempt happens. Then she dies because she's mostly drained of will to live (or simply because the spear does hit a critical spot), but upon realizing how her daughters are being treated, resolves to try and create *something* out of this titan curse, but since she has no real concept of what a happy existence is, has no idea where to stop and falls back into the slave role regardless.
