It's crazy how a little tone infliction can change how a line comes off, like Mufasa saying "That's cause nobody messes with your dad" in the original comes off as playful because he chuckles right before delivering the line and when he says the line its warm and embracing, not to mention the animation helps the expression of the characters. The 2019 version makes it sound like Mufasa is kind of arrogant, because the line delivery is stale and lack of facial expression makes it seem less friendly

I was so disappointed with this film and I loved both the original Jungle Book and the CGI/live action one they did. I really feel the director was just relying too much on nostalgia to carry the film and didn't put in a real effort. Which is a shame because this had the potential to be a great film.

As much as everyone's talking about the remake in the comments, I'm more focusing on how brilliant the performance and design is from the original 1994 film. Jones' voice carries so much commanding authority, the voice of a God, but still a relatable father with many complex emotions. Also huge credit to the animators who brought this performance to life. This simple 2D drawing feels so real.

It's not even just Mufasa. Every other character in these clips sounds stilted. 0:47 - Original!Scar sounds genuinely scared, he's out of breath, really putting on a convincing act. 2019!Scar sounds like a side character in a musical. (not to mention Original!Mufasa sounds scared for his son and 2019!Mufasa sounds like he's trying to remember who Simba is.) 0:56 - Original!Zazu has a pronounced attitude in his voice and movements. We immediately see as an audience that he's a pompous, snarky sort of person (Rowan Atkinson's niche tbh). 2019!Zazu gets one word, which is barked, with no movement whatsoever to suggest attitude. 1:12 . Original!Simba sounds like a kid. 2019!Simba sounds like an NPC in a point-and-click adventure game. I'm sure I'm not the first person to point all of this out but holy hell. You could put Oblivion music over the whole thing and it'd fit right in. I've seen middle school theater productions with more emotion and energy than 2019!Lion King.

Oblivion was such bad game with such great soundtrack. I still have the tracks on my phone. Awesome music. Damn ive tried that game with over 80 mods all together in order to make it at least a bit interesting but still it was alpha demo of the game that supposed to really be. One guy somehow added 400 mods in the game. Hardcore fan. ---------------------------------------- Lion King 2019 is comedy btw. I knew it going to be bad but Disney exceeded my expectation far beyond ive ever imagined. I'm crying of laugh on Mufasa's death. The more serious the scene get the more funny getting. Its so bad.

With Vader, them using Respeecher also allowed Hayden Christensen to perform the voice acting while filtering the performance to sound like James Earl Jones's voice. So not only did they avoid this kind of old-age vocal performance, but they let the guy in the suit drive the vocal performance too. I think that's really interesting since it connects Anakin to Vader in a unique way, but most people seem unaware that they've done this. It's like they think an AI magically created the voice performance out of thin air.

I don't want to be too harsh on Earl Jones, for a man in his goddamn nineties he's still a competent actor and his voice is as powerful as ever, but it just doesn't commend the same respect as it used to. People age and their voices change, normal thing. If they were already recasting everyone, they really could have found a younger dude with a voice of zeus.

Something I would like to point out is that in the original, Simba is always on Mufasa’s right during conversation scenes (like during the first half of Mufasa’s lesson and during the “Under the Stars” scene). In the Bible, the phrase “seated at God’s right hand” represents a position of special privilege and authority. In the context of The Lion King, you can say that Simba always being on Mufasa’s right represents the way in which these characters see each other; in particular, how Mufasa sees Simba. Simba means the world to his father, and even if Mufasa is disciplining his son, the fact that Simba is on his right side can be understood to mean that Simba is always Mufasa’s precious little prince and nothing in the world can change that. The remake changes this by having Simba be on Mufasa’s left during the morning lesson scene, and then goes back to having Simba on Mufasa’s right during the discipline scene.

Man if the story was updated to be about how Mufasa is really old and tired, 90 Year Old JEJ would fit way better.

And the sad thing is that it really could have worked (and actually been very interesting) with a few revisions. Perhaps in this version the Pride Lands had severe and complex problems for years and so Mufasa didn’t have time to find a mate and have a kid until late in life, so he’s very aware of the fact that Simba well may have to assume the throne before he’s an adult, and thus he focuses on ensuring that Simba understands what being king means from the start. But no, that framing wouldn’t have been able to exploit nostalgia so obviously it wasn’t an option.

I don't know if it's like the quality of the recording, but the original Mufasa had like...more "base" (?) to his voice? Like I felt like I was listening to a gentle but powerful beast, even if I just listen to the audio. Whenever it would cut to the remake, I thought "wait that's the same character with the same actor?"

In this specific case, I'm not sure it's because of his age or the director just accepting almost any recording he was able to get while the man is still alive. Or just pure laziness like the rest of movie has shown! They obviously didn't do the best they could, but who gives a fuck if you still make more then 1 billion dollars profit?

This is sad. Voice acting, especially in classic Disney animated films is some of the best ever. Can’t wait for “live action” Little Mermaid…

I am, I don’t know what I could prepare to the live action to the Animated. If I had a choice, it would be all be above.

It's not the actor, it's the director at fault.

I agree. The director is the one who decides what is and isn't good enough

I would have just casted Keith David in the remake.
