While I love YNAB, unfortunately, it can be pretty confusing. A lot of people will sign up only to get quickly frustrated and then give up never to return. I admit, YNAB definitely has a bit of a learning curve at first. But that's what this video is for.
I'm going to walk you through everything you need to know about 'You Need A Budget'.
In this video I'll cover:
0:00 - Intro
0:19 - Two things before starting
1:26 - Creating A Budget
2:00 - Setting Up Accounts
9:19 - Ready To Assign
10:43 - Category Structure
20:53 - Setting Targets
29:31 - Underfunded & Income
31:00 - Different Paycheck Cycles
33:00 - Assigned, Activity, Available Columns
35:30 - Assigning Your Dollars
40:20 - Why you can't assign future dollars
42:40 - Colors in YNAB
43:50 - Daily Routine
48:44 - Credit Cards In YNAB
51:50 - Weekly Routine
53:45 - Monthly Routine
This tutorial truly is everything you need to know. I hope you learn something and be sure to leave a comment with any questions you have.

You are my savior, Nick! I have been so frustrated with YNAB since I started a little over a month ago. Your video helped me so much in understanding the basics. Thank you for the generous content you provided! I spent the afternoon watching this & reworking what I entered last month. Even without using the system completing, I have chosen not to purchase a few things - while they would be nice - would not have helped me reach my goal.

I got tired of issues with Mint and went looking around for different alternatives. You basically sold me on YNAB as I already was using a zero-sum budget (which was hard in Mint sometimes) and your videos have helped me to get setup in YNAB to a place I am happy with. Thank you so much for your videos.

I am one of those learners that needs to learn in a step by step approach. I started last year and gave up because I just couldn’t grasp the concept for some reason. I am currently going through cancer treatments and the fear of the cost, travel, tons of copays, and possible loss of time at work while living pay to pay scares me more than the cancer. I knew I needed to get myself on a budget breaking the living paycheck to paycheck cycle. I am SO happy I found you. I am signed up w YNAB but need to watch any and all videos that will help me fully understand the “concept “ if that makes sense. I’m sticking to it this time thanks to your videos.

Nick, I cannot thank you enough for this video. I am a financial coach who has consistently channeled my clients toward a different budgeting tool. Last week one of my new clients insisted on using YNAB. Ugh! I have looked at YNAB for days trying to figure it out and got nothing but stress over it all because I found it cumbersome and not at all easy to understand. I found your video today and you make YNAB clear and understandable for me. Thank you! I feel like I can at least have a semi-knowledgable conversation with my client this week because of this video. Definitely will be checking out your other YNAB videos.

Great video. New YNABer starting a month ago (but long-time electronic enveloper user). I wanting to make sure I get all of the basics. Note to anyone watching in 2024 and beyond: Targets have changed a bit, so this video has old info. The concepts are still the same, but the names and options have changed.

Wow, I just started YNAB yesterday afternoon and it's quite a massive, complex program (to me, anyway). However, I figure if I put the time and effort in to master it, I should reap the benefits. So glad there is an abundance of helpful information available. Every time I rewatch a video, I discover a new tidbit. Thanks to all the presenters for their efforts to lead us newbies through the underbrush so we can eventually breathe the fresh air above of financial self control.

I started using YNAB in Oct 21 and being a type A personality tried to account for EVERYTHING so that I became overwhelmed and once the extra spending of Xmas began I just gave it all up and stopped tracking completely. Now come Feb 22, I have plucked up the courage to start again and with a new budget and watching your videos and following your check lists I feel back in control that I can do this. Hearing you say -'keep it simple till you get more familiar with the software' has stopped me overthinking and feeling like it's all too hard. Thanks Nick, your videos are so clear and cover many of my questions.😊

Going into April I was perplexed with the extra money in my grocery category from March that rolled over into April and how it affected my new April target. It was driving me crazy! You’ve been the mentor to many old-YNAB’er; me included 🙋🏻‍♀️ (but I starred watching you for travel stuff 3 years prior to diving into YNAB; I actually used another Australian budgeting application tool at that time). So glad you planted that seed for me so that, when I had outgrown my budgeting app in March 2020 (just prior to early retiring) I remembered your old YNAB recommendations and demos. Thank you. 🙏🏻 Ps - I like the simple approach to the inactive category in this updated start guide. One click for hiding and unhinding when viewing reports; no need for them to hold their prior category heading. Solid simplification. 👍🏼 I’ll be stealing that one 😉

Great video! Thank you for taking the time to put it together. Even as an experienced YNABer I was sitting here with my budget open implementing some of your tips. I loved your explanation of how YNAB handles credit card transactions, very well presented. One reason I prefer to keep a savings account is to maintain a level of fraud protection. The majority of our annual insurance premiums (home, car, & life) occur in December/January right along with spending for Christmas and school tuition for the spring semester. Having these funds build up in checking bares some level of risk (albeit fairly low), so I've opted to keep excess funds in a separate savings account. Keep up the great work!
@mappedoutmoney

Thanks Ryan! Appreciate you saying all of that and glad you found the video helpful. I totally understand your desire for the savings account. That makes a ton of sense and if it's working for you, then it's good to go!

Nick, fantastic content, I've been watching your entire playlist for YNAB, and I'm loving it, I've tried several times in the past to get YNAB up and running well, and for the first time ever I feel like I have the tools and the understanding to commit and actually do it well. My wife and I are on board and will continue down this path. A couple of questions: 1. Do you plan on doing a video that talks about net worth and balancing assets and liabilities in YNAB? 2. Do you plan on doing a video that addresses things like HSA spending accounts, money would obviously come into those on a semi-regular basis, and would be part of RTA money, but they would be restricted to only approved spending types/categories. Just wondering the best way to track this. Again thank you for your wonderful content.

My notes: 8:26 Starting balance should not be the "available balance" on your bank account. You want the posted/cleared balance (that doesn't include any pending transactions). 36:45 Look at the video about credit cards 37:23 "Because the available column is like a mini checking account for that category." Great explanation! 43:50 - Daily Routine

Great videos Nick, I have been using YNAB for four years now and still find myself learning this from you! Do you have an updated Categories + Category Groups list that you would share since since you moved into a house? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Thank you so much. Using YNAB's tutorials left me befuddled. You have cleared up everything (except about reimbursable expenses, but I'm sure if I dig around I'll find that you've covered those elsewhere.) Very appreciative of your knowledge and sharing.
