A little late to the party but I have to agree with everyone that's posted here. 5 years ago my wife and I were constantly struggling to understand where our money was going and how it was being used. Fast forward to now we own a home, I've paid off nearly 30$K in debt, I've consistently set up categories for managing those long term expenses and I finally have the flexibility to put money towards my retirement. I'm late with much of this stuff, won't deny it, but I cannot begin to express how freeing it is to not worry about where money will come from. If you haven't started I can't recommend this app enough to get you out of the debt cycle.

As someone with dyscalculia YNAB has given me a lot of certainty. I did need to redo my budget because I made some mistakes but I do feel more secure now. Quite a shame I can't pay using IDEAL. Credit cards and Paypal are very unusual ways of payment in my country.

I am on my 3rd attempt to make YNAB function. Hours of my life , 3 start overs, paid for my first month after the free trial, just paid for my second month. So confused. Summa cum laude graduate, money in and money out cannot be this hard. I know I am close to having that breakthrough moment but I’m getting very discouraged. I want this to work since I see all the wonderful comments once you “get it”. Online live classes and tutorials still haven’t got me there yet. Not quite sure what to do other than quit starting over and having to lose all that data and type it in again. My wife will use it if I can explain it to her. We have agreed to not link our accounts due to past disasters with that. I want the simplicity of knowing where every dollar is at a glance and no stress of wondering how the month looks like. Making money is not the problem making a usable budget with future goals is. I am persistent. Attempt #2 was best so far. #3 looks like a mess with duplicates entries, all red items, and lots of green stuck in to be budgeted

The last time I used relied on an actual budget was 35 years ago so this is a little overwhelming at first glance.
@scovarrubias245 жыл бұрын
It is overwhelming at first. But the app brings clarity and with that a plan. YNAB changed my life. I started about 4 years ago. With YNAB and a second job, I was able to pay off all of my debt. You got this!

How do you know how much to allocate in each category with each paycheck? Is there a "formula" to "giving each dollar a job"? It seems so arbitrary, but I know it's not nor should it be.
@YNABofficial4 жыл бұрын
Hi Elena! We recommend prioritizing your expenses, starting with your immediate obligations, and then followed by your true expenses. Here's an article that dives deeper into how to prioritize when you give every dollar a job: www.youneedabudget.com/guide/prioritize/

I am using YNAB as well I think it is a powerful tool if you have low income or high costs or a project to reach any saving goals. But there are few points to consider. You need to to be consistent, this means really consistent and this is pretty hard. A further thing is if you don't struggle with your costs (issues) it is hard to do it consistently because no thinking about money (in all Situation) is life quality. So sometimes it is enough just to know about your spendings afterwards to take decisions. My opinion: Take time on how to increase income, so you don't need to think so much about outcomes.

Is there somewhere that I can go to check out the latest version of YNAB. I have only tried to use the Classic Version
@YNABofficial5 жыл бұрын
You can sign up for a free trial at ynab.com, Catherine! And be sure to check out our help doc for those coming from classic - docs.youneedabudget.com/article/768-coming-from-ynab-classic

Can you add currency conversion? What about if I'm getting payed in Euros and I want to convert that in dollars?
@YNABofficial6 жыл бұрын
What we normally recommend for handling multiple currencies is to use a separate budget for different currencies. However, a third-party developer has developed a handy tool using our public API you might try out! - ynab.rmillan.com/

I had the free trial last year, and YNAB extended it. It wasn't until this december when I became a student where I was able to afford this program. It's taken me just about a year to say "mmm... i'm getting it! It's been frustrating doing this program, because it was a new way of thinking about budgetting. However, I'm excited because I'm learning and not feeling guilty about budgetting! Hopefully, it works for your again :)

My thing is I'm paid by weekly, and that income is guaranteed reoccurring... What's irritating is that expenses can be projected to the next month, but income cannot... So perpetually you are always showing over budgeted on reoccurring expenses. I don't live paycheck to paycheck... Why does your app do that?
@YNABofficial5 жыл бұрын
Hey, Jeff. I know it's a bit of a different method to get used to, but only budgeting money you have is key to the method. You should check out our Set Up Your Budget workshop. That will show you how to plan ahead while still only budgeting money you have now. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYLIhGihiapprbc

This video confused me as a beginner. He starts off with allocating funds in each area by just typing it in. This led me to believe that this is the primary way of making a budget. I then ran into the problem of having to do this manually every month. Only in the second video do you explain how to create a goal for each category to request the exact amount from you automatically, which you call a "budget template." This is the much preferred way of doing things. I wish he had explained that in this first video, as this gave the wrong impression as a beginner. I appreciate trying to keep it simple, but creating a goal for a category is already pretty simple and should have been the way he introduced the system in this video as it's the primary way people want YNAB to function. I am now hesitant to send this video to new YNABers because I don't want them to get confused/sidetracked by the way he manually enters everything, however this is a shame because the rest of the video is excellent.
