From the makers of Daimajin comes a trilogy of terror ripped from the pages of Japanese folklore, with ghosts and monsters from ancient myths and legends brought to life through stunning special effects, alongside an epic, big-budget reboot of the series from a modern-day master of the macabre, now available together on Blu-ray for the first time.
In the first film in the trilogy, 100 Monsters, a greedy slumlord’s attempts to forcefully evict his tenants invite the wrath of the titular spirits when a cleansing ritual is botched, with terrifying results. The second film, Spook Warfare, tells the tale of an evil Babylonian vampire inadvertently awoken by treasure hunters, and a brave samurai that teams with the yokai to defeat the bloodthirsty demon. In the final film, Along with Ghosts (released only 12 months after 100 Monsters), the yokai are roused to defend a young girl on the run from deadly yakuza.
Decades later, none other than Takashi Miike (Audition) helmed The Great Yokai War, a loose remake of Spook Warfare that used cutting-edge digital effects to renew the franchise for a new generation. In it, a young boy is given a grave responsibility: to band together with a group of yokai to defend humanity against a vengeful and powerful demon that has sworn retribution against modern-day Japan.

just watched the first film... I loved it, reminds me of "A Chinese Ghost Story"... Japan really had some great pre-90s horror flicks... besides stuff like "Godzilla" and "Daimajin" are "The Ghost Of Yotsuya" (1959), "Jigoku" (1960), "Onibaba" (1964), "Kwaidan" (1965), "Kuroneko" (1968), "Hausu" (1977) and "Tetsuo: The Iron Man" (1989) are all great examples... and extremely dark Samurai films like "Sword Of Doom" (1966) and "Demons" (1971) are extraordinary examples of Samurai film noir

Right? It’s also the only film that has a commentary track, which is pretty bad. So the actual classic Showa films get no commentary tracks.

I wish they could reboot 100 Monsters for today's audience but make it more serious and scary. When the Yokai's peace is disturbed by greedy land developers who are secretly working for the Yakuza start building on land that no one enters because locals claim it's haunted, but treat it as sacred. At first, they start small by scaring away workers and causing mischief but the Yakuza thinks it's some locals in costumes. Soon the Yokai are discovered by some locals who befriend them and aid their mission. Sadly, when one of their human friends are killed by the Yakuza, the true fury of the Yokai is unleashed. Eventually this causes a war between the Yokai and the Yakuza, which causes the Yokai to become exposed to the world.

A $100 dollar set with no commentary tracks for the three classic Showa films? Starting to feel like Arrow is putting all their effort into making the packaging “look cool”. Especially after the 4K/ Blu ray Dune set that “forgot” to include the Blu Ray part. Arrow, I love you but you starting to eff-u.

Not really interested in these films. However, I hope for more Japanese films in 2022. Like more Masumuras, maybe some Kobayashi ? Who wouldn't want Harakiri in 4K for example? I am keeping my fingers crosse for this kind of stuff. Japenese cinema has potential
