alpha is the light that shines solely because it can. lacking her intrinsic purpose, she still chooses to live. like the city lights received purpose from the humans who constructed and utilized them, alpha received purpose from her former owner who gave her the cafe and taught her how to live. does alpha have any reason to function without her owner there to instruct her? do the city lights have any reason to shine without humans? no, but they do so anyways. alpha lives because she can, and the city lights shine because they’re bright. live, live, live.
@tinyoo2 жыл бұрын
the light continued to shine regardless of an absence of visible purpose, and eventually they still fulfilled their purpose (shining for the Doctor and Alpha). live the question of “do I have a purpose”, and perhaps you’ll experience the answer.

Exploratory filmmaking is a treasure. It takes a lot of time and a lot of dedication to the craft to pull something like this off. It's also why in the old days (and sometimes now, though the market changed), OVAs tend to have the higher quality. Anime destined for TV often have network constraints, such as timeslot or needing to ship out X episodes for an order, along with other interesting viewer science. OVAs? A chance for pure craft.

Exploration, memory, a few fetch quests (coffee beans, a rake, a new sweater, swimsuits for friends, etc., but an over-arching storyline only findable through meting rare visitors or hearsay. As a game it might be fascinating, but would need the most dense detail so that there's something everywhere, but only when needed, such as a valve for the water to be found in a vacant lot of pampas grass, and operated, before it rusts shut, but only after the water in the pipes gets salty due to the rising sea.

This story is so beautiful but I can't help but feel creeped out by contextualizing it in our time when climate change is a looming threat to our civilization. Living in the third world where the climate is hot, in the middle to far future, will I be afforded the same chance to live out the apocalypse so frivolously? In such peaceful grace? By the time I'm writing this, we already have less than 10 years to fight the irreversible catastrophe.
@AnimeSalvageYard2 жыл бұрын
When this was new, entire villages were already disappearing not just from flooding, but also collapses due to deforrestation. Regulations to stop or slow that--regulations that are still sometimes ignored--happened after all of that. We saw it coming, we saw the global changes on the news, we had many of the same conversations. We live in an era of an I Told You So with no real reward. Not to say that the 2010s and 2020s didn't have their extremes, but people born in the 2000s are simultaneously born in an extreme weather situation AND born after entire landscapes have vanished. It's hard to miss what, effectively, doesn't exist. Which is why education on the subject is important. Humans are adaptable, and being born in a wild catastrophe can become a normal Tuesday afternoon stroll. But at costs I'd rather not pay. ALSO. For a taste of the climate change activism era's anime, take a look at these two series if you haven't already: Blue Seed. It's...InuYasha with plants. Though I guess it's more accurate to say InuYasha is Blue Seed with furries. Earth Girl Arjuna - The world's climate revenge in the form of a nature magical girl.
@AnimeSalvageYard2 жыл бұрын
To be specific, Japan's entertainment industry--which isn't a reflection of its government or the entire population--has its finger on the pulse of climate disaster storytelling. NieR is already a franchise on its own after starting as a spinoff, and I consider it new school. America's Captain Planet era had a few anime series that followed similar themes. The "ecoterrorist" part of the 1990s spawned a few tragic heroes and heroic villains. We've had a few phases of speculative fiction looking really realistic. Hopefully, that slows down and we can let nature reclaim WITHOUT eating our faces even harder. Makes some baller ass animu tho

About the sunken city being powered, that was weird to me too. It could be supposed they run on some sort of self-sustaining technology, so they'll be up until someone takes them down (or they weather and break down to the point they no longer function)

- also, now that the manga is being printed in collected volumes, and I read two, it seems the camera's memory is intended to complement hers, in the way that the camera's eye is just like a robot's. The purpose of Alpha's existence may be to become some sort of witness, or even 'spirit of place', rather like the character of the Osprey, who might be another robot in human form, that exists like a nature spirit, only seen rarely, and from the corner of the eye, and usually only by younger people.

@AnimeSalvageYard5 жыл бұрын
It's a bit of an experimental series, and it takes a specific approach to how a lot of futuristic stories are written. The story happens in a futuristic Yokohama, and though the anime touches on the sea levels a bit, if you're not from Yokohama, the massive loss of land won't hit you as much.
@AnimeSalvageYard5 жыл бұрын
Why is the area flooded? Why are sea levels so high? It could be from climate change, it could be from a natural disaster. It could be anything, but in this situation it doesn't matter.
@AnimeSalvageYard5 жыл бұрын
Not that those issues don't matter, but for the way the story is being told, it doesn't matter. A lot of stories go out of their way to "lay the setting" using exposition. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō instead tells the story as if it were any day in the week and people are just living there.
@AnimeSalvageYard5 жыл бұрын
We all live in a world the survives countless disasters, but it can be a bit jarring to see a real world place so different without a big explanation. Some people need those explanations to be true, but there's an audience for people who just want slice of life in other settings while the reasons why are fed subtly rather than with some huge, dramatic plot points.
@AnimeSalvageYard5 жыл бұрын
For the main plot, the story is about two robots who casually discuss the setting without going into deep exposition.
