Thanks Kevin that's more like it - I'ts starting to make sense - by describing it as the technician on the job , with things that I hadn't thought about like duration in terms of a working day and what you're thinking about to save time ,rather than waste it - Ive read tonnes about an OTDR yet still been unable to picture actually using it in real time situations until I saw your presentation here . It's one thing knowing all the parts and buttons -But knowing how to apply them to your advantage is the real gold ..

I work for a MSO currently we have an HFC network throughout our city. About a year ago I was promoted to the Fiber team. About 4 months into becoming a fiber tech, the tech with the most experience and time as a fiber tech left for another job. We don't currently have a training department. I have two other techs that I work with and we all have about the same experience. We have 2 FTB-2 pros and most of what we have learned has been through trial and error. I really wish I would have found your channel sooner. I am trying to get the new bosses to get us the iOLM feature, and also to go through one of the training sessions by exfo. I will also be sharing your videos with my co-workers. Thank you I learned a lot.

Chris, I feel your pain I learned OTDR as a tech through a lot of trial and error and questions. If you have EXFO gear and are in the US we can set up a online session. Drop me an email and I will set it up for you and your team. It is free! Kevin.Peres@EXFO.com

@KevinPeres4 жыл бұрын
Let me know how it goes I am glad you found some value in my video. For troubleshooting my biggest advice is increase your averaging time and reduce your pulse width.

Thanks Kevin, it was extremely informative I learnt a lot. I have a question and confusion regarding the resolution when testing links around 140km long, normally I would set the Dis range around 160km and the plus width about 1 or 3 microsecond and for the resolution I set it 5m. is it right or wrong? should I use less or more? the thing is I'm not certain about the usage of the resolution.

Hey Kevin, how about a loss in a fresnel reflection event, could it be due to splice from pigtail to cable inside the ODF?
@KevinPeres4 ай бұрын
@@fibre.gelmonkey it absolutely could. If the splice is close it may merge into the reflective event. Great point. I have some customers adding “pigtail splice” as a new event. It’s a reflective event and splice combined

Great video Kevin! One very basic and quick question: How do you calculate the distance of 1m based on the 10ns pulse width? Thanks!

Hector I am glad you liked the video! I am not sure I understand your question sir
@HectorMtnz4 жыл бұрын
@@KevinPeres Hi Kevin, thanks for answering. I was referring to what you explain at 36:00. I was interested in knowing the equivalence between pulse width and the distance the events need to be placed to be both detected. Thanks in advance!
@Soda883 жыл бұрын
@@HectorMtnz I believe this is the distance for OTDR detector to recover from reflection at said pulse width. The longer the pulse width, the higher the output power, the longer it takes for the detector to recover.

How do you assist if an otdr has a launch problem

Most launch problems are a contaminated connector. If you are unable to improve the launch condition it may have to come back for repair.
