Joss isn't well known because she decided the art was more important to her than the money. After several years of fighting with and being silenced by EMI, Joss's supporters (especially in Brazil) put so much pressure on them that they agreed to release her from her contract if she gave them her millions. She agreed, went independent, started her own record label, and is now the first artist to go on a world tour to every country in the world (though I think Iran denied her entry out of fear that she would perform in public). In every country she would work with and learn from a local musician, and bring awareness to local charities/non profits. She has put out a lot of amazing music.

@@JRenee-Sings She's spoken about it a little, but there aren't a lot of details made public as far as I know--possibly as a condition of letting her out of her contract. Her song "Free Me" is about this (down to the lyrics "Free me EMI"). She'd make an album, and they'd want her to take a few good songs from it and make some filler music for the rest; they wanted things like that to maximize profits, and she refused, so they stopped letting her put out new music for years. I love that a Joss Stone album is an experience, start to finish :)

Shes not trying to take anything for herself, she's just there to sing a duet and put on a brilliant performance. The audience liked her and even the great Whitney Huston paid her compliment in the introduction, so why try and diminish her? Not to mention her voice reduced Aretha Franklin to tears, and James Brown personally requested she join him on stage.

My friend me told me of her music and we went down to Center City at Tower records and I saw that they tried to cover up her face because she had a kind of distorted album cover. She has a nice voice and it was cute that a seventeen years old English girl was set to emulate the greats . I understand that she worked with Betty Wright on her first album. I own that that album (her best one) and have since the day I went to Tower and purchased it almost 20 years ago. It is a really good album. And why wouldn't be? The music is borrowed music from classic artists such as Betty I don't have any issues with it. But BET is literally a Black entertainment television. Y'all invite us to your Grammys be we never win artist the year, album of the year or none of that s***. You always give it to some obscure dumb artist who nobody really knows when several Black and Brown people have had amazing albums that deserve all of the big accolades at award shows that are mostly geared to work white people. So, again, I say what would she be doing at the BET awards? You can love her and I do like her but can we have one thing for ourselves.m? Emulating and copying and admiring is beautiful but at the end of the day Joss is whiye and there are plenty of awards so that will give her all the accolades and love and attention that you're so desperately crave off the backs of Black people.
