Yomari Punhi is a Newari festival marking the end of the rice harvest. It takes place in November/December during the full moon day of Thinlā (थिंला), the second month in the lunar Nepal Era calendar.
The word yomari is a combination of two Nepal Bhasa words: ya which means "to like" and mari which means "delicacy" or "bread". The name literally translates to "a popular (liked) deli".
Yomari is also the name of a traditional steamed rice dumpling that is a beloved dessert in Newa culture. It is often shaped like a fig fruit and stuffed with a mixture of sesame seeds and dark sugar. Yomari is usually cooked during the Yomari Punhi festival in mid-December or other major Newa festivals.
Yomari has social, cultural, and religious significance within the Newa community. Some traditions associated with Yomari include :-
Yomari Fonegu
A culture where people visit each other's homes to ask for yomari, which gives them a chance to sneak a peek at their loved ones.
Yomari offerings
People make offerings of yomari to the goddess Annapurna at temples, especially the Annapurna Temple.
Masked dances
Masked dances are performed in the villages of Hari Siddhi and Thecho in Kathmandu Valley.
Throwing yomari
Yomari is thrown from the top of newly built houses or temples as a sign of worship. It is also thrown from the top of chariots before the pulling ceremony.
