It's been 5 years and no news for a second season yet. Although I recommended it in the video, I can't currently recommend this anime unless you plan on reading the second half of the story in the manga. I have not read the manga, so I don't know if it's good. I'm just disappointed that there is no second half.

there are actually three OVAs of this anime 1 covering kija's back story and 2 for zeno.and u should totally read the manga ! it is as good as the anime.(in my oppion)but it's still on going

The manga is really good! I highly recommend taking a stab at it. The manga tackles a lot of darker themes that are applicable to the current world. Also dives more into Yona's and Hak trauma with Su-won and his past! I'm really on the edge of my seat with the manga right now! Although I'm very easily entertained and I get attached to series quite easily, so take my recommendation with a grain of salt.

Lol very good review. Im very happy that this anime is getting the attention it deserves. As a manga reader, all I can say is that EVERYTHING that people often criticise about this anime (i.e. Soo won and Yellow dragon's lack of developement; lack of focus on political issues; lack of attention from the blue dragon after he was introduced, Yona's reliance on her eyes rather than her skills, etc.) are all dealt with on the events that will follow after this season of anime that's why I really think a second and even third season is necessary assuming that the anime will continue to be faithful to the manga. They've really done an excellent job adapting this into anime though

Honestly I don't think the eyes took away from her. They were used literally around 5 times in 24 episodes. I think their doing it mostly to foreshadow who she is in the future. (I haven't read the manga but its pretty obvious.) If this series gets a second season I could easily bump my 8 out of 10 to a 9 out of 10. Great review Bob touched on a lot of points why this series is great.

Teh AnimeHQ The story is awesome but being 24 episode instead of 50 something felt like it was cut right at the part where it was going to get really good. Its like doing the origin of batman and right when he puts on the costume for the first time you end it... What? xD There is so much potential in the world and characters that I want to see where all this goes. SPOILERS(Maybe, I have not read the manga) True, its pretty obvious who she really is. She have the eyes of a beast because she obviously is the "reincarnation" or legacy of that dragon that became human(which I cant remember the name...). Everything in the story points to that.

I thought Yona of the Dawn was fantastic. I didn't like how her eyes essentially paralyzed everyone. Especially during the firework boat scene. Everyone just watched her take the fireworks, run to other side of the boat and light them. but when Yona gave Kumji that glare when he grabbed her head and when she shot him with the bow MY GOD SHE WAS SO SAVAGE... dear lord. But i thought Soo-won's development was pretty sufficient.. His character is mysterious and seems to have more ulterior motives. He'll definitely be developed in the second season. I wouldn't rate the first season lower for that IMO.

Only thing I disagree with the reviews is Soo Won as I find him to be a very interesting villain and what we found out I this season is that the kingdom is prospering from his rule so I thought that was interesting development, unless you didn't think that was enough. Also regarding Yona's eyes I found the first scene where she is held by her head to be quite a powerful moment for her character development as it is basically a stamp for her transformation from a frivolous naive girl dealing with the problems to someone who is able to confront evil with a courageous and seemingly ferocious demeanor while still keeping a level head but the second scene, while first one does foreshadow it a little her using her eyes is freeze someone in fear is ridiculous and needs to be expanded further in the series so that it doesn't seem like a plot device.( Maybe it has something to do with the power of the red dragon idk I'll have to wait and see.)

I disagree about Su Won. To me he was mysterious and ended up being my fav character cuz I feel he has a vision bigger than anyone else in the series. While an antagonist, I would not call him a villain.

Afolabi Bukola True, he seems to have the kingdom's best interest in mind. He seemed to want to marry her too. Revenge may have been a motivation but its not the only thing he did that for. Hell, his revenge is linked with what was wrong with the kingdom to begin with.

Yona of the Dawn is in my top ten favorite animes, I really loved this anime. I guess if you look at it critically it probably is just an 8 out of 10 but I personally enjoyed it more than that.

I feel as though next season they will focus on su-won more because of how at the end of the last episode they show yona and all of her comrades starting to battle the army. Also I believe su-won's main goal is to "avenge the kingdom" by expanding it and also make it a "brighter" place.

I kind of disagree about Soo-Won lacking development while we don't get the level of detail we kind of get of some of the dragons we do get to see how craftiness as a leader. The episode where he and his advisers visit that village and he kind of puts on the act of being clueless but all along he was sewing the seeds for gaining alliance with them but very quietly. Considering I was thinking Soo-Won might have merely been a puppet when he instigated the coup against the King that episode was an eye opener to how clever he was. I want another season for this show and as I understand it the manga is still going so makes me wonder if it will happen. I know Funimation has started dubbing it but I gotta say I can't see Monica Rial doing the role of Yona well. I didn't like her as Sakura in Tsubasa Chronicle either and this is giving me flashbacks... -_- Maybe I'll give it a shot but I think I might solidly stick to subs with this show because the Japanese casting was excellent.

Well.. You shouldve read the manga then you'll have to compare the before and after yona.. Please do not scroll down if not want to be spoiled (Spoiler⬇) There was one chapter where yona protected a friend (lili) the daughter of the water tribe general. She got a scar on her back. There was also the time where she... Yeah whatever Im too lazy typing everything lolz..

Yona actually does have a dub...it's available on funimation's website. Monica Rial does the voice of Yona however they started with the second season dubbing rather than first season so you can't find it until episode 12-14 (somewhere there). Nice review. I do think however Su-Won is meant to be ambiguous in this first season since they want us to know about the same amount as Yona and that helps the viewer understand why she doesn't go after him immediately at the end of the first season despite collecting her party of characters. The eyes as much as I enjoyed them I don't think it should have actually occurred until a major event near the end of the series actually happened and people could see the rage filled eyes and have an actual fear of her based on information they had gathered about her...or something. Honestly good review this was one of my favorite shows of the spring anime season...but then I had about 8 shows that I thought were equally good just in different ways. thx for the review.

Bob theres a good reason why the yellow dragon good that kind of introduction its more or less consistent with the manga as his character is left up in mystery and will be brought to light much later in the story. [SPOILER] yellow dragon bar none has the sadest back story (and strongest / most costly power)

This is a great anime. i do wish the action scenes were more epic then they were. so i actually enjoyed the development of Yona more then anything. her change from the start to the end is just awesome. the emotion is pretty good as well! my biggest disappointment really tho is that the end didn't conclude the story which would be fine if a 2nd season was guaranteed but. you know how that is if your a veteran. i am considerably picky with shows and hate a lot of popular shows (any romance like toradora for example) but i highly recommend this.

As a manga reader I can say Zeno doesn't get really devolved for a while in the manga. His character was introduced in the anime just like he was in the manga. But I loved this anime. *Crosses fingers* I need a second season

Are you referring to comedic relief? I thought it works well, I haven't see this show so I don't how it stacks up, it allows shows to have some down time between the high amounts of tension. It's why I was annoyed that they removed Puck from Berserk.

The show is pretty sweet to watch, sit back and relax. It doesn't take itself too seriously but the main problem that I got with the series as it went on, was Yona's motivation. After seeing majority of the kingdom, seeing all the poverty and misery of the common folk for what her father didn't have the strength to make right, I find myself favouring Soo-Won, who is pretty much a rip-off from Griffith imo. Yes, he commited murder but by the looks of it, it's justified and genuinely wants the land to be prosperous and the folk to be happy. Keep up the great work Bob, looking forward to your next review ! =)

max101victory i should make a video about it. basically the score consists of various different points where i average out the scores of different areas including a few individual sections for characters development plot progression ect, things like animation is worth less but sound is worth less than animation making story and characters the largest factors. i like to couple an enjoyment rating with the final score because i felt it was unfair to ecchi and action heavy stories that have no plot. yea the plot can be uninspired shit but if i enjoyed it thats a redeeming quality in itself. so i can give something a final score of a 4 but an enjoyment level of a 7 for example. if there is only 1 score then it means my final score and enjoyment level were the same. maybe i should list them anyways but i felt it was redundant

so its just an average? by this method of scoring sound=plot, and a story can have the same score for having a 0 in plot but a 10 in audio compared to its vice verse. also what grading criteria do you use to give a .3 or .1? just curious

Well I like to believe that everything deserves to be equal in the sense of one value shouldn't overpower the other, though that does make sense because for example in FullMetal alchemist the music shouldn't be equal to the story but I'm weird, and regarding the decimals they vary between the logical me ie: a .1 would be just slightly better than the baseline and a .3 would be above the baseline to a fair degree, but there are times where I just think to myself: that looks about right! And I go on with it.

I found this a really wierd one. I expected to like this, we got Haak who was kinda awesome, the dragons, nice fights, the villain seemed to really have a reason..... but after the second episode with the first dragon I realized that it somehow just really bored me until now.

I am only in my 5th episode but the show reminds me so much of Goguryeo rather than ancient China. Even the map reminds me the map of Goguryeo, Silla and Baekje. Maybe it's just me only. LOL

I really don't see this as shoujo. I guess it kind of is but I think it's more fantasy than anything. I don't think it's really about the romance. I guess you could probably say it fits in the genre's demographic but still I think the fantasy is more so the defining feature of the show. imo. the romance is just a bonus.

Stratos lima nah i think yellow dragon will be a goku clone but soo won might get development. thing is though how many ppl watch this series and think that soo won is a more just ruler than the previous king? thats the risk they take. soo won is more experienced and understands people while yona they express theirself that she is only 16 and cant rule due to inexperience.

The yellow dragon is meant to be an enigma. The other characters even say that they don't understand him in the episode. There have been hints dropped and his intro is brilliant in hindsight. More hints would be dropped in a theoretical second season. However, a second season wouldn't fully go into his backstory (assuming they remain as faithful to the source material as they have been). The manga's current arc is covering that, and we would need a third season to get to that point.

Actually there is a reason why the yellow dragon just appeared, why suu won has so little character development, and for yona' eyes. Read the manga or continue reading my comment for the answer. SPOILER!!!!! Yellow dragon was with the first red dragon from the beginning and was waiting for his master for such a long time and tested yonaThis gives a good stopping point for the anime where there is still an air of mystery since it has to do with future arcs Suu won's character development has to do with the fact that his development is related to future things in the manga Yona's eyes have to do with her being the red dragon and her love for humans plus the fact that it does show development with her more fierceness and bravery

matt fahringer i didnt hear many good things about the dub for this one. i like dubs to it just depends on the atmosphere of the series but this i was happy watching it in sub

Guyssss.....watch the OVAs. The second one tells you Zeno's backstory... -.- Are the OVAs not relevant to reviews or something? I am confusion.

I love this anime so- - - much I figited more w/ this anime than w/ Ouran. I felt sooo sorry for the yellow dragon, was not a very good intro to this character at all, just a few phrases of speech gets him in. Episode 24 hmmm not a good ending spot in my eyes, to me it feels like the story only just begun, AHHHHHHHWAAAAAAAAHhmmmhmmm it's 2016 there's still no 2nd season

It's not a very good dub. Funimation is up their usual tricks with tons of modern language in the script like "Nutjob".

SnowWolfAlpha ugh..i think funimation has pretty good dubs as of late but this is disappointing especially considering how great the dub for spice and wolf was with seemingly period accurate voice acting

BobSamurai Anime Reviews Sadly and this is the dub I was most looking forward to, especially since I've loved all the other broadcast dubs. Monica Rial and Chris Sabat play the leads. Just imagine Momoka and Giroro from the SGT. Frog dub, that's pretty much how they sound. One sounds too nasal and the other sounds too deep. The others are OK or might be with time.
