Because they rely so much on shareholders and whatnot, and shareholders probably couldn't care less about these games. They invest in the company and expect to see profit from it immediately. As such, it doesn't matter if your game is successful and sells well in proportion to it's development and budget. If it's not making that Call of Duty money, they don't see the worth in keeping it around. To them, games are nothing but a product, and so will cut whatever losses they deem necessary. 20 or so years ago, these companies saw the true value of games, but as they've grown more corporate, so to has their treatment of the games they make.

Not to mention Bungie gave them Halo in the absolute best state, healthy player base, big fandom, best blueprint for the game etc in 2010, all they had to do was continue it by just updating the graphics. By 2015 the franchise was holding for its dear life and is basically dead now. Anything Halo related now is not anything to be hyped for, which is an absolute tragedy, Halo used to be a word uttered to describe how great the video game industry was, now it's uttered as an example of incompetence of a flagship product. Halo Infinite was just okay unlike Halo 5 which was genuinely bad, but if your comeback game in the series is just "okay" then you've got a big problem, not to mention the graphics were panned before launch and caused a delay. I don't even play Infinite, I booted it up once and got bored because there was no forge mode, they created some stupid battlepass that was so hard to finish and the gameplay felt dated. "I truly believe that we are experiencing one of the worst moments in gaming history..." We're currently in a second crash. This is what happened in the early '80s. Companies weren't selling as many games as they thought they would. E.T. was a part of that because Atari infamously produced way too many copies of the game. Sales declined. Profits dropped. Layoffs happened. Closures happened. That's what the crash was back then. It wasn't a total evisceration of the industry like people incorrectly believe. It was a major shake-up of the industry, a contraction, and that's what we're starting to see now. And because of inflation and the recession, we'll see more of this happen. It'll get worse before it gets better.

This is very likely because most important developers (which are Japanese) left Tango after Shinji Mikami left and formed his own Studio rather than remain in a now fully American-owned Studio If there's something that the Japanese are known for is that they'll never forget is what the Americans did to them 8 decades and most Japanese don't like to work with them or for them. So, when Mikami left, most of Tango's developers felt that the Studio was going to a full American ownership rather than the more loose alliance they had when Zenimax was independent. So they started to look a way to leave in a way their work would be guaranteed, and that's when Mikami came into play again with his new Studio. So, they packed up and left So, after they left, Tango Gameworks was basically dead since the people who essentially made the Studio all left. So Phil Spencer might not have any choice except shutting it down by this point. Of course there were other choices but, these would be more time consuming, not to mention that it would break Tango Gameworks' essence for good

No matter what a game studio is own by a corporation is going to get shut down no matter what because they don’t care about the creativity and the love and passion of the developers and game makers if a game failure or a success full. What a bummer to the gaming industry

The turmoil we've seen these publishers put their partnered developers through so far this year honestly makes me sick to my stomach. I always knew slime was dripping from the walls off in the background. Between this garbage from XBOX and what Sony just pulled will hopefully push more and more small development teams to try to community fund instead. These massive corp publishers are flat out devastating creativity and the good will of customers at the same time.

It's beginning to feel like Microsoft is just half in/half out when it comes to video games these days. They don't really care what happens to these developers when they buy and eventually shut them down. It's just a game to them, but it's a harsh reality for thousands of talented people.

Half-baked live services with microtransactions are far more lucrative. That’s the lesson we taught big corporations. Quality means nothing now. Congratulations. Our irresponsibility with money has made this bed for us to lay in.

Well, the customers are to blame for supporting this trash, so ultimately it falls squarely the shoulders of brain dead consumers who only want their dopamine hits.

Except multiple massive live service games have failed in a row now, including destiny which was never actually that profitable, and games like HiFi sold great and received all kinds of awards.

Yeah I’ll always blame gamers first. Idk what that guy was talking about when he said “destiny which was never actually that profitable” lmao.. like what? They make oceans of money off their micro transactions and half baked DLC’s.

@@hypeman1825 And yet Activision was so desperate to sell it and dumped hundreds of employees over the years to protect their bottom line. Just because something is overly monetized doesn't mean it's automatically profitable. They make hundreds of millions from their player base, but the clueless executives burn billions more over time with their short term focused decisions.

It is fucking wild and absolutely hilarious that Nintendo is absolutely destroying their competition by doing the absolutely absurd tactic of “doing nothing”
@nworder4life4 ай бұрын
Nintendo is set, all they have to do is use their ridiculous amount of Ip's in movies, anime, theme parks and merch to make Bank. They will have the money to make excellent games with their next console and those games will sell the hardware. Nintendo is king of the gaming industry.

Nintendo is legit the only publisher that seems to understand the industry: make good games on reasonable budgets, prioritize gameplay over graphics.
@DaveFallows4 ай бұрын
They ain't doing nothing. They're selling well over 100M games per year annually at full price. With figures like that hardware sales don't even begin to matter that much anymore.

Unfortunately, people seem to be like, "oh it's just business", when the problem with buying your competitors and then shutting them down or absorbing them leads to a few very negative and noticeable side effects, and the best example is most likely pro wrestling. WWE is an amalgamation of all the past smaller pro wrestling circuits that used to exist in the US, and after WCW was no longer there, the product had a steady decline in quality, as with no competition, there is no motivation to put out better content, and therefore people will either consume your product, or have nothing. Which is not quite the case here, but it is fairly similar.
