This means that in order to make the other half, there has to be a significant amount of "low revenue" (in comparison) persons engaging in that gambling. Persons who are likely to spend unhealthy amount compared to their income, or at the very least compared to what they get in return. I do not know the numbers, but this can only mean that the total amount of players engaging in this gambling has to be closer to 25-50 % of the player base, all of them getting f*cked by a system that wish them nothing but harm, regardless of the amount invested.

I remember playing ultimate team a few years ago and I really did enjoy it. I found it fun and entertaining when I first started. After a while I started noticing that I kept getting the same players and the same rewards. I stopped playing because it was too grindy for the rewards it offered. I never paid for any card packs because I don’t spend money on games outside of buying the game. I don’t believe in buying in game items, card packs, or loot boxes with real world money. As such, I don’t play sports games because they’re the same game every year with the only difference is something added or removed, and upgraded rosters. The rosters can be upgraded with a roster upgrade patch. The differences between different games can be made if sports games where released every other or third year.

Even internally EA pushes the devs towards monetization by tossing out feature briefs that don't make them more money directly. It's why traditional modes are all being shoved into ultimate team with the end goal being ultimate team is just the entire game and every mode uses the cards in some way.

The items that people receive via loot boxes and microtransactions (mostly the ones with artificial scarcity) holds extreme value in the same way that money still does and did whenever the gambling laws were first written. As an avid FIFA player for many years, each new release made it harder and harder to get the best players you want. Chances of getting TOTW or POTM cards or even special event cards got less and less. I never really spend more than $50 total over 5 FIFAs on Ultimate Team and they've always been a waste. When I did get good cards, it's because I saved up my coins and literally just bought the cards off the market and traded in a few players for the money. I haven't really gone back into fifa since FIFA20 so i've been out of the cycle for now.

This "We don't agree" argument reminds me of a comic i've seen years ago about a court case between a phone manufacturer and a normal family who has brought their fridge to court. The lawyer of the phone company hols up a phone and say "Well, your Honor, if you look at it from this angle and squint your eyes, the fridge and our phone look somewhat similar." @@benjaminpeterson455 More importantly, the higher ups change. Right now EA is run by people who understand business, but have no love for the products they're selling. Just like Bethesda ever since Todd Howard entered the picture.
@falguard3 жыл бұрын
@@TG-ge1oh They understand business, but they don't understand creative business, or the video game business. Business knowledge and experience isn't actually all that transferrable. Put a packaged goods exec in charge of a video game company, and you get Activision - crank out a sure seller until it buries its nose in the ground and move on to the next "product"...until you run out of IP and developers. When companies in creative businesses start valuing "safe bets", they stagnate. Video games need a balance of business acumen and visionary idealism; if you're deficient in either, your company will fail, and that's the real bottom line.
@TG-ge1oh3 жыл бұрын
@@falguard Couldn't agree more, my friend. What these companies are, is creatively bankrupt. We complain about our legal systems not comprehending what niche the video game media fills, but the truth is very few people actually do. The ones cranking these products out see them as just that, products. We need more intertextual studies in the field, explaining how games are similar to and differ from the rest of the entertainment industry. On the other hand, our literature, comic, televised and silver screen media suffer from the same symptoms, so I'm not sure what I'm hoping for at this point. I guess we need an Apple, a Sega, a Sony every generation to challenge the mainstream. We need them every generation, because every generation, last gen's innovators join the rank and file of mainstream.

It's like making people play the game in the center of a casino, with flashing lights and sounds all over the place, with every single aspect of that building and it's interior being designed to push and manipulate you into spending money there, and then within the game itself you get pushed to putting some coins in the slot machine, and then have the audacity to say it's just optional. Me and my pals only play Fifa Clubs and it is noticeable that the quality of this portion of the game has not improved for years. The 'internet' of gaming has been liberating with online co-op and competitive gaming but the flip side is that the overall quality of many games has been diminished. I was hooked on a mobile game with in-app purchases several years ago and the outcomes were not good for me or my family. That addiction is very real.
