The Yonkers Police Department serves a large and diverse community, the third-largest municipality in New York State.
As the department saw an increase in youthful offenders, the need for initiatives to assist them became apparent. Collaborations with schools, youth initiatives, and various organizations are all important parts of the community engagement strategy.
The department also runs an active diversion program for young people who committed non-violent crimes.
They get judged in "Youth Court" by their peers and are sentenced to community service, for example, at environmental charity Groundwork Hudson Valley or even at the police department.
Precision policing is also key to the department’s strategy for managing children in danger of being recruited by violent gangs by targeting repeat offenders in those gangs.
The "Mom Summit" engages the families of children at risk for criminal involvement and looks for solutions to set them on the right path by collaborating with the school system, social services and even the Mayor of Yonkers.
