It sounds like the soldiers and civilians went through hell. Needless deaths caused by intolerance and fear. RIP every Irish, English, Scottish, and Welsh soul. I hope we can all give their deaths meaning by learning from the mistakes so we can all live in peace

The brits didn't have one hand tied behind their backs in South Armagh. They were too busy hiding in their little bunkers. They couldn't even drive the roads around places like Cullyhana, Forkhill, and Crossmaglen. The Provos of the 1st and 2nd BN South Armagh get no credit. They really took the roads away from the brits. The brits even had to fly their garbage out of the area. Tom Barry and the 3rd West Cork Column would have been proud.

Martina Murray what would you expect? The Catholics to join a prayer group and pray that they'd be treated like human beings. The British government had the power to cut the IRA off at the legs in the late Sixties but chose to pander to the loyalist elite who didn't want the Catholics to have a voice or a vote. Unfortunately the civil rights protesters where seen as terrorists and the violence and atrocities perpetrated on them was reciprocated by the IRA. I hope we learn something from history.

They had SLRs (semi-automatics) not machine guns. Another Fenian mythology. The Paras WERE shot at; Martin McGuiness remained very silent about his actions that day, very telling (many believe he used a sub-machine gun that day). The pandering to the families has of course put 100% blame on the troops (just like Hillsborough). Sorry that those people died but the 100% this way or that way verdicts absolves the provos of any blame. And they were itching for a fight that day.

It makes me sad to note that in the documentary, a british soldier rhetorically asked why the irish were fighting them... an almost uncanny portrayal of vietnam, except this conflict continued in stalemate.
@seankenneally3483
@seankenneally3483 2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing, my father served to combat tours in Vietnam and I noticed that this video interviews a lot of British soldiers saying " we had to fight this war with our hands tied behind our back " and we would have done a lot better had we been unleashed. But my question is... Better for who? Even though I'm American I acknowledge that the Vietnamese were fighting for their own self-determination just as the colonies did against the British back in 1776. Though I'm only halfway through I have yet to see the Irish Catholic perspective regarding this particular Quagmire. It is a mess of an imperialist own making. So my sympathy wanes.

Uninvited? They were called in by the Northern Irish government to maintain peace. In the first few days of the deployment conflict ceased. Surely maintaining the peace is something to be condoned? Not for the IRA or PIRA who can't argue their political beliefs without shedding blood. Sinn Fein seems to be the only party that needs to use intimidation and violence to further their political standing. The true ignorance is thinking that will actually gain them support.

I quite agree with you, me being an English nationalist who wants independence for England. Have you ever considered this. The population of Northern Ireland today is 1.8 million. There were 30 years of the 'Troubles' which cost the English countless billions of pounds over that time, all for the sake of 1.8 million people fighting out their ancient grievances and settling old scores.(The English being the majority tax payers). There was the cost of maintaining the army, the extra policing, compensation, hospitals and surgery and rebuilding those places that were bombed out etc etc. If 1.8 million people, who were still fighting their historic and ancient battles, had to pay for the damage their countrymen caused, how long would the 'Troubles' have lasted? They were basically being underwritten by the British and mostly the English tax payers. Now, I would like to see a united Ireland because I think it will be inevitable one day anyway. But, there is a caveat. In 1922 the Irish conferred foreign status on themselves. They re-affirmed that foreign status when they left the Commonwealth in 1948, Well, that's fine. However, the Irish need to be given the same treatment as any other foreigner where England is concerned. No more being treated as if you were still de facto British citizens. No more Common Travel Area. No more automatic rights to British passports, welfare, health care, driving licences, voting in our elections or even becoming MPs. You would need residence permits and work permits. You should be treated no differently than if you had come from any other foreign country as foreign citizens.

The British were fighting the Nazi threat alone before America aided them, so yes they were responsible for the prevention of Nazi control. That is an indisputable fact, I really think you should educate yourself before telling others to research false truths, unless you are a 'troll', which would make a lot more sense. If you're going to talk rubbish about a historical event, at least choose one less well know than WWII, there isn't a person here who fall for the "history" you're spewing!

It's funny, you hear the same complaints today from American cops... how it's become so much more difficult to effectively do their job because every time they turn around there's someone with a camera filming them doing something unethical or against the rules and putting it on KZbin. As though they don't see the glaringly obvious problem in that argument. That brick-throwing protester you pulled from the angry crowd went to jail. That was the consequence for his actions. Why should you be immune to the consequences of videos on the evening news of you beating him into the pavement with a baton?

@@gug1970 It's a soldier's job to maintain composure, most of the soldiers in this video said so themselves. If they can't do what they're trained to do then they shouldn't be in the job to begin with. Being civilized means going against human nature at times. We have rules in society, and if you can't understand them then "you'll never stop making daft statements." They were told to use the force necessary to control the situation, anything past that is considered excessive and frankly barbaric.

@@maryelizabethfullam3186 It is not their job to maintain composure. Their 'job' is to kill the enemy (whoever the hell that is at the time - what on earth do you think the army is for ?) These are 18 to 22 year old men (ie, not the composed mature highly trained individuals that you hilariously imagine) with a small amount of riot training but generally trained to kill and face down (at the time) the threat of Russian invasion of western europe (the army's prime consideration at the time). The idea that they'd stand there stoically whilst some irishman tried to stove their head in, shoot them or blow them to bits is hilarious. You've never known any soldiers, or, it seems, young men. I wonder how composed you'd be if you were in that situation. I imagine singing cum-bye-ya , holding hands and bemoaning the awful violence might not have lasted too long before your attitude hardened somewhat. We have rules in society ? - just what the fuck do you think the soldiers were attempting to uphold at the time that allows dimwits like you to say how terrible they were ? - christ, most of the lads had no other choice, probably no other chance of a job at the time, went and risked their lives under difficult circumstances so that some millenial dimwit like you can was lyrical 40 years later on how 'terrible' they were. I suppose the IRA, INLA, UDA, UVF were absolute choirboys (if you ignore the murders, beatings, gangsterism, kneecappings, romper room murders, out of hand mass murder of innocent civilians including women and children in Northern Ireland, the republic, the mainland and europe. Yes., bless them. We'rent a few squaddies awful. Christ. kids today are fucking naive idiots.

Buddy, believe me, if Britain could pull the plug on Northern Ireland and get out, it fucking well would! It is just there is a sizable pro-British population who wish to remain British. We don't abandon our people. People who have lived there for 400 years, longer than the USA has existed. Northern Ireland has the democratic right to request a referendum to vote to rejoin the Irish. More rights than many countries/regions in the world to self-determination. Might I refer you to the Basque region and Catalonia and see how Spain doesn't even give them an inch.
