Interesting old photos; I see the flooding is not a modern problem; could probably have guessed that from the markers in the KIngs Arms, next to the river. The Anglo Saxons called it Eoforwic because they mistranslated the Latin name Eboracum. They thought it meant Boar Town (modern German Eber) The Anglo Saxon version was Eofor. There's a footy team that plays in Blue that comes from a place called Boar Farm...Eofortun.
